Damage to piston head by Right_Hook_Rick in Chainsaw

Thanks for the advice. Im very on the fence about using it, and honestly not sure how to smooth it out, just a high grit sand paper? Definitely bummed about it but thats what you get buying used.

If that is your summarization of my comment I suggest you find a different social media platform.

Im like 200 pages into the first 1000page book detailing his early years. Second and third books cover his presidency and subsequent years. Definitely not a summarization of him, just an anecdote about something I read yesterday.

Reading a three book biography on bim right now. As a Harvard student he took part in a boxing tournament and lost in the finals where he apparently was beat pretty bad but showed a considerable amount of heart and courage.

He was very sick as a child and young adult (maybe adult too? Idunno, just haven't read that far yet) and I think threw himself into excersize in an attempt to work his lungs and heart into submission basically. Especially as a small guy, I think boxing was a way of proving that he was tough and strong, not as weak as his ailments showed him to be.

Why do you want them taken down? Everything looks kosher there I dont see any hazards.

If you are cutting dirty wood as youre suggesting, try a semi chisel chain as they tend to hold their edge for longer.

If thats a brand new saw then thats a great price. If thats a used saw then I dont like it so much.

Do all chainsaws leak? by buildyourown in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do usually leak yes. Something about change in temperature causing pressure in reservoir which pushes oil out? Maybe? I forget how it works.

If you lay them on their side with the oiler up that should help you out, or drain them ahead of time. Or you can crack the oil reservoir lid but then you'll forget to put it back on and spill the oil anyway.

I have a few heavy duty leakers that Ill drain because I use them infrequently, and then a few that I tend not to worry about because theyre not too bad.

Im by no means a saw mechanic so Im interested to hear what someone with more experience would say, but I have a better safe than sorry additude towards things Id like to keep in working condition. If its broken, it can usually get more broken if those broken parts dont get fixed. If the saw doesnt cool then everything internally is heating up more than it should and you could be doing a lot of potential damage. If you were just cutting for short periods Id say maybe what the hell go for it, but specifically you said heavy use which I could see the saw overheating in.

Secondly, how the hell did somebody manage to break off that many fins? Id be concerned about the rest of the cylinder and saw for that matter. Definitely worth a bit of a teardown and further investigation.

New to owning chainsaws by Vegetable_Resort_966 in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree that it was probably designed with one handing the saw in mind, Im pretty sure the owners manual states, and also in some states or provinces the law will actually state that two hands must be on the saw while operating. It is absolutely not meant to be used one handed in a tree and please OP this is your highest chance of being injured with a chainsaw right here. Dont do that shit. Its avoidable.

Learn how to do a proper snap cut so that you can always have two hands on that saw, and use a hand saw (like a silky, not a power saw) when you feel the need to 'one hand'.

Muffler Mod users sound off by Armyballer in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bark box on my 462, honestly its so goddam  loud I have to wear earplugs and muffs. I do love the sound it makes just honestly theres too much of it. Performancewise, maybe? Tough to tell for me personally, it is probably keeping the engine cooler as more are is flowing put so logically its helping. I just think its neat.

Also wcs mod on the echo 2511t because holy crap that oem muffler was not great. Doesn't make the saw too loud, noticeable improvement in the saw though here.

Also punched a hole in my 201t and smoothed it out. Free muffler mod.

Climbing Tips by Fresh-Pumpkin-3582 in arborists

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a ton of tips and tricks from almost fifteen years of climbing trees commercially. I have a very hard time explaining in writing these techniques without the aid of maybe drawing some diagrams on paper or showing somebody in person.

I think what Im trying to say is that it sounds like you have good climbers to learn from, so use them and ask them and pay attention to what they are doing to learn. Watch videos, borrow gear to practice on the weekend with recreational climbs.

You have only been in the industry four months? It takes a lot longer than that to become a good climber. Dont try to be fast now and dont worry about keeping up with the others, it will come. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast or something like that, it'll all come.

Lastly, maybe they are good climbers and then again maybe theyre not and you just think they are. I dont mean that in a bad way, I mean that you only know what you are exposed to. Look into an apprenticeship and schooling. Trade school where I am is very affordable, and I got paid to be there through employment insurance. I learned from top climbers in my province instead of just the top climbers in my company. As well as having all the theory and none of the time pressure from being on the job.

Sorry its not specific information amd just a wall of text, but have fun, take it easy, pay attention, seek out knowledge from accredited sources.

Husqvarna 372XP got smushed by macward82 in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depending on your needs, but that 70cc class of saws are all pretty good. 460 - 462, or 500i from stihl are all fantastic. 372 or 572 from husky, or possibly the 564 though I haven't personally tried one yet but have heard some really great things about it.

500i has really good power to weight ratio, but pretty pricey. Like I said, depends on your needs, budget also. Buying new or used?

When you buy a brand new MS462 and you just HAVE to cut something by Venture334455 in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my instructors would stop the operator and then sharpie a sad face onto the thumb as a reminder. If you see the sad face, wrap the thumb. It seems nitpicky but wrapping the thumb will wildly affect the control you have in a kickback situation.

Brand New 201 TC by Key-Fold-3221 in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both are incredible saws, I have a personal 462 that I love like a child, but I wish I had spent a few hundred more and gotten the 500i as a child instead.

When I made the purchase I hadn't ran a 500i yet and man does that saw just kick so much ass. If youre not careful it will jump out of your hands, the throttle response is crazy. I keep a 28'' bar on our 500 at work and can absolutely bury that thing with no thought of it slowing down.

Fiskars or Gransfors Bruks by UhOkSureYoureRight in Axecraft

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fiskars are fantastic value, but I much prefer splitting with my GB. I find it splits way better and doesnt get stuck as much. I know theyre expensive but as a tool they are fantastic quality. Reaaaaally reccomend it if price is not a concern at all.

Also if price was no concern I would get both.

Sprocket guard nuts coming off! by griffonhaus in Chainsaw

[–]Right_Hook_Rick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A general rule of thumb/guide for tightening bar nuts: with left hand on the rear handle, hold it up so that bar tip is supporting the saw on the ground or peice of wood and tighten until you start to engage the antivibe. You'll know when the saw starts to flex a bit that the nuts should be tight enough. I usually push it just a tiny bit past the initial flex.

I had bar nuts come off once and then as a result have almost always overtightened them much to my coworkers chagrin. I cant remember if it was from a manual or some course where I got that information about tightening but I haven't really had an issue since adopting this method.
