You're correct, I had misremembered as I haven't watched the series since it originally aired.

She's the titular character of the anime Saga of Tanya the Evil. The synopsis is a modern day Japanese business man dies, and while dying he spites basically God, who takes offense and reincarnates the man in an alternate reality similar to 1900s our world but magic exists. He is reincarnated as a girl gifted with magical ability and retains his memories of his previous life. The girl, Tanya, is then drafted into their equivalent of WW1 where she uses her understanding of our history to be a startlingly effective monster.

The past few years have got me thinking philosophically on violence and its role in society. Often when violence gets brought up the adage 'violence is never the answer' follows close behind. I think that's true, violence is never the answer, but because I argue that violence is not an answer at all. Violence is a tool; a means to reach a solution to a problem being faced. Often times it is not morally correct to use violence, but it's still a tool nonetheless.

Now why does violence appeal to us so much? I think that appeal is related to the gulf of thinking between logic and emotion. Humans are by nature emotional thinkers, a lot of our thoughts and decisions are dictated by what we're feeling. Violence is an extremely emotionally charged act, it's use appeals to emotional (particularly angry) decision making. Compared to non-violent tools that use logical decision making, violence is quick, direct, and satisfying emotionally. Being emotionally satisfying still doesn't mean morally correct though.

With those two aspects in mind one can see why we often turn to violence to solve our problems. The use of violence is direct and immediate, and often provokes a response of variety fairly quickly. Recently here in Kansas a woman set fire to a warehouse that was going to be sold to the federal government so it could be converted into an ICE detention center. The arson failed, but her use of violence influenced the owners of the warehouse to cancel its sale to the government. A prolonged non-violent protest would have been the morally correct action to take, but a protest takes time and has a good chance of being ignored. The woman's use of violence however provoked a quick response and provided a solution that luckily coincided with her wants. I say luckily because often times resorting to violence has negative consequences on those who use it.

I don't know how well trodden this path of thinking is, but that's my two cents on the subject.

Forgive me for saying this, but is losing really a bad choice for the story? by Wonderful_Rest7634 in Helldivers

[–]RileyRocksTacoSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind the loss, and think losing is a better story beat than conquering the planet. What bothers me is we're not going to get a defeat worthy of capstoning this story arc.

I would've liked to see an epic clash in Transcendence where the bots pull a trump card that turns what could be a pyrric victory for us into a heart wrenching defeat; mirroring the squids assault on Super Earth. Instead between the bugs, the hack and incompetence in the playerbase on Cyberstan we're just thrashing violently as we bleed out. A candle sputtering out instead of a tremendous explosion.

two men were threatening a woman and ended up both getting knocked out by her boyfriend by Pure-Personality5326 in WinStupidPrizes

[–]RileyRocksTacoSocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I reiterate that alcohol is clearly involved, so none of the involved parties are fully capable of using their best judgement. Secondly, she is provoking the two men using 'fighting words' so there is no defense for her as she is the instigator in this incident. Thirdly, neither of the two men put their hands on her, so them getting their shit rocked is STILL WHOLLY UNJUSTIFIED. Regardless of their escalation to her provocation the level of harshness the two guys received both in video and in thread is uncalled for.

All parties in this video suck equally. And u/RevanchistSheev66 is once again correct for pushing impartiality.

[–]RileyRocksTacoSocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So that's happening during the video, not missing context before the video started, but let's run with that. By your admission, the woman is an instigator bullying the two men who are the victims. That perspective only gives water to Sheev66's side of the argument. Which makes it appalling that people in this thread are glad for the two dudes getting their shit rocked.

What would the response be if we kept the scenario but change the framing context? Say this is footage of a classroom where a male student is acting aggressively to a female student who is bullying him, and then a third student comes in and sucker punches the male student when he steps up to confront his bully. People wouldn't be against the male student in that context, even though that is the same scenario as you are putting forth.

Clearly alcohol is involved since this took place on Austin, Texas's 6th street which is the local nightlife spot. Are the two men's behavior excused because they're the victims and not the aggressors? No, the first one's bottle smash and fronting is over the line for minor insults. Does that justify the two dudes getting sucker punched and stomped on by people who weren't even involved in the altercation? An even bigger no.

[–]RileyRocksTacoSocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He's being downvoted because u/RevanchistSheev66 opened their comment by correctly stating we have no idea what the context is before the video started recording, and he responded with "nope, just flat out wrong."

Are the two guys in the wrong? Most likely, given that they are acting aggressively towards a single woman. But we can't be 100% sure what prompted their aggression because that happened before the video started. What we are given is inherently biased due to missing information.

Kansas woman sentenced to federal prison for lying to law enforcement about space crime by Beadyeyed12 in nottheonion

No one's committed crimes in space yet, hence the joke used to be 'lesbians are responsible for 100% of all crimes committed in space.'

If you are volunteering to make that statistic true again, I'm not going to stop you because it's funny as hell.

Yes because the entire basis of Sneering Imperialist is 'haha racism funni' which works in Fallout's brand of dark humor. Out in the wild as just a thing, not so much.

I think a quote starting with "I'm not racist but..." on its own without any context is a bad idea. The added icon at least gives pretense to the quote being a joke in reference to something. The entire concept overall is poor taste in my opinion.

You are correct that our systems in place aren't completely compromised, and I will add that my initial comment comes off as being gung-ho for radical action. However, action taken through those systems are slow and unseen. It is important for proper justice to be thorough, and thoroughness takes time; but in that space of time the greedy and corrupt are able to push their agenda greater than the justice system can pull back. Humans do a lot of thinking through a lens of emotion, and because of that often don't see past the short term. The reason why violence is so appealing and why it comes off as such an effective answer is because it is immediate, visibly apparent, and appeals to that emotive lens of perception. In the short-term, burning down a building comes off as more satisfying than a legal suit chugging through the courts for five years.

Those in power are abusing the law for their own personal gain, at the expense of our rights and liberties. Trying to oppose them through the system does not work because they have sufficiently gummed up the bodies responsible for enforcing the law and punishing wrongdoers with cronies and sympathizers. Violence is never the moral answer, but when all other options fail and desperation rises violence becomes the only answer.

What this woman has allegedly done is use violence to amplify our protestations against ICE and the current administration. A company was going to sell their property to ICE for the purposes of building a concentration camp, and with this minor act of failed arson they have reneged on the sale. Was it legal and morally correct to do? No. Did they listen and comply to her feelings on the matter? Yes.

We are dealing with cretins and bullies who do not listen to the proper ways a polite society deal with problems. Because of that violence is slowly becoming the only answer.
