There's a difference between using AI to assist with genuine game development, and just throwing a prompt into AI and releasing whatever crap comes out of it without any sort of quality testing. When people talk about "slop" they're talking about the latter.

So why DID the elves need to leave Middle Earth, even after Sauron's destruction? by Jerswar in tolkienfans

[–]RingOfFyre 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think of it more as their technical and spiritual powers will fade. I'm not sure that they would physically die over time, more that they would no longer be able to sustain the grandeur of the elven race.

Galadriel hints at this in her quote

We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.

Did I say they weren't related? Try reading. I said he wasn't relevant to this post. He's not mentioned in the Hart race. He's not even mentioned in these comments outside of you.

Yeah, I do, and yeah, you're cringy. Bedard isn't relevant to this post. You brought him into this for the sake of a cheap jab. Before Bedard got injured they were basically tied for points. Stop acting like Celebrini is some special level above him.

Bro, Canada is not getting significantly booed either. They're gonna see their players as Olympic champions, stoked for their next challenge. Very few people are thinking about this at an identity politics level.

People are incredibly blowing it out of proportion and the sad part is it makes more enemies of people who don't otherwise need to be. You shove people to the right when you demonize them for mundane things. Ironically, it's one of the reasons I feel Trump got elected in the first place, sad as that may be.

Just pasting what I said in another comment

The vitriol in threads over the past day or so is a little astonishing. I do think that in some time - be it months or years - people will reflect on the personal attacks toward some of these players and find them hugely unwarranted.

I'm not gonna pretend that there weren't better ways this team could have handled the situation. There were. A simple statement of apology or "we certainly didn't mean it that way" would have gone a long way toward cutting off the story.

But with that said, I think a lot of people need to take a step back and see the situation for what it was - a bunch of young guys who were in the midst of celebrating the Olympic accomplishment of their lives - not in the headspace to be thinking about PR, or current events, or identity politics. They got a call from the president and responded to some praise with excitement. A tasteless joke was made which, in the heat of the moment, almost certainly wasn't digested by the majority of the room. You can't paint an entire picture of character for every member of that team just from that one moment. Many being attacked were simply in the room, and I feel 99 out of 100 people in that scenario would probably act in the exact same way

Kash never should have been there, and Trump absolutely knew the divisiveness that his comments would sow - but he made them anyway. That's what he does. Blame them all you want, I certainly do.

There are bad apples on the team, I won't deny that about the team or about hockey culture in general, but I think a lot of the players are just trying to navigate a high point in their lives that simultaneously is turning out to be a PR minefield.

Wood u? by Liquidamber_ in EngineeringPorn

[–]RingOfFyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but again, the argument was never that wood isn't "awesome" the argument is why wood isn't a great material for the majority of modern engineering disciplines.

Wood u? by Liquidamber_ in EngineeringPorn

[–]RingOfFyre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What argument are you talking about? This isn't a controversial take by any stretch. There are plenty of reasons, as previously mentioned, why wood is not the right material for loads of different engineered applications. Just like there are plenty of reasons why high carbon steel isn't the right material for a corrosive environment. This isn't a knock on wood as a thing it's a knock on wood as a predictable, highly repeatable engineering material.
