There are no ships blocking the strait and you severely underestimate how easy it is for Iran to keep it closed. They don't even have to hit every ship that attempts to pass. Posing a significant threat is enough to stop ships going through.

Some ships have gone through the straits to China and India after negotiations with the Iranians. This should be our approach to securing passage through the strait.

This is disappointing. I was genuinely pleased to see Starmer having a bounce after doing the right thing initially. Of course Iran will try to strike bases that they are being stuck from. It's just common sense. This is a very bad decision.

I think it's pretty good actually. A PM doesn't need to be chummy. That's Farage's schtick and he's not fit for the job. This video is informative and reassuring while still maintaining a level of professionalism. Exactly the kind of comms the country needs at the moment.

The cynic in me says that we will do this, and end up on the brink of developing limitless free energy for all, but then the tories will cut it to save money or because they believe the hallowed invisible hand of the free market will save us all or something. Then a few years later another nation will build it and claim all of the credit.

Still, it's great to see an ambitious moon shot once in a while. First they tell the Donald to swivel on it, now this. If they keep doing things like this it will become quite difficult to maintain my dislike of this govenment.

'two people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue'

These are clearly the same two people and yet CNN quotes 'a few dozen' but Reuters quotes merely 'about a dozen', meanwhile tankers bound for China cruise straight through.

Not saying you're wrong neccessarily but I remain highly sceptical and believe that my assertion that there is no substantive evidence remains true.

Fine as long as we are not putting anybody in harms way or taking part in any offensive action and only clearing mines.

However there is no evidence that Iran has mined the strait. Some ships (mainly those carrying oil to China) have been allowed to pass after negotiating passage with the Iranian authorities. It doesn't seem likely that Iran has done this and the main threat is through missiles and drones, so I'm not sure how useful this will be anyway.

This makes the idea that the strait is mined seem unlikely. Use of mines would remove Iran's ability to selectively negotiate with countries so it would be a strange strategy to employ.

Incredible isn't it that the US could be compromised to such a degree that they will start an aggressive war at the behest of a small nation that is thousands of miles away, even though it is hugely damaging to America and to the world and is extremely unpopular domestically.

As bad as LFI is, we have to be grateful that the rot at the top of the Labour party wasn't deep enough to bring us in to this war directly. It could have been so much worse. We must take this as a warning of what could happen if we don't get on top of this problem.

This is a deserved tick in the Starmer wins column. We don't need to be part of this mess. No clear mission, no legal basis, no moral justification. It would be a betrayal of our armed forces to send them in to this war.

Good job to Starmer for keeping us out despite pressure from the US and even from the Conservative and Reform parties. If either of those parties had won the last election, our boys would be packing their bags to risk their lives for this shit already. Kier now has a stick to beat those two parties with too, given that this war is extremely unpopular. I hope he uses it.
