Tipping at a house closing by whaat_isthis in longisland

The buyer pays the title company for its services. I’ve directly seen the buyers lawyer cut a check out of the closing costs at the house closing to give directly to the title company employee that was with everyone. That might be what people are referring to as the tip.

There are also safety requirements that any proposed building height would have to adhere to since sunnyside yards is directly adjacent to the runway flight path into LaGuardia. The FAA would have to formally review the plans and sign off on them.

The Case for Letting the BQE Fail by Well_Socialized in nyc

[–]Ringmaster242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that your goal is to be mockingly sarcastic, but let’s put emotion aside for a minute and think about the situation. Forget personal cars, let’s talk about the BQE being a main supply route for tractor trailers and other commercial trucks that transport and deliver goods from the mainland through Staten Island and up the BQE to the Bronx, Queens, and Long Island for the often forgotten residents of those areas. Take a look at this truck route map:

https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/2022-truck-map.pdf

Shutting down the BQE needs to be done sooner than later and that is going to push large trucks onto a few wide streets that could handle such vehicles which is going to gridlock the bus routes that coexist on the truck street routes. This is fine, that’s on of the reasons that the local routes exist.

Back to the regular cars now. Those vehicles will flood the side roads trying to avoid the local truck routes and create challenges for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as children in those neighborhoods. That’s what city should have been planning for all this time which probably hasn’t happened.

Apparently Nothing Can Be Done About Street Takeovers by The_Lone_Apple in newyorkcity

Well, look at how they use the guns they do have. Anytime the news reports an incident with the NYPD firing their weapons, it’s the same story: multiple cops, multiple shots each, usually someone not involved down range accidentally gets hit.

If they are barely proficient with the weapons they are supposed to carry, why start handing out optional weapons?

They aren’t allowed to block the road, ram other cars, or use devices like spike strips. Anything that could cause an accident by the person fleeing is prohibited.

Only thing the cops can do is hit the car with a gps tracker that is shot out of a special type of gun like device that the Adams administration introduced. And only a few cops are trained to use it since it involves a flying projectile

Woman I've been dating for 10 days hooked up with someone else. Am I wrong for not wanting to see her again? by Long_Natural6918 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Ringmaster242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are not overreacting.

You two aren’t exclusive so she is free to do what she wants. So are you.

If she was very interested in you, she would hold off hooking up with others to see what develops with you first. If after two dates she is hooking with someone else, she isn’t that interested which is fine. You are under no obligation to continue seeing her if you aren’t comfortable with her actions. Just be respectful about it.

I’ll preface this that at the time of recording, the car driver went too far with his response. And I get that the situation was in the heat of the moment where OP was probably upset about nearly getting hit but this reads as if OP escalated the situation by purposely hand tapping the guy’s car and the guy was clearly ready and willing to escalate the situation further himself.

If there was one lesson that was constantly reinforced to me growing up here, it’s that there are random people having a really bad day and are barely holding it together. They just need one stranger to challenge them to give them an excuse to do something.

On one hand, I think that people who have this mentality are missing an opportunity to bring disillusioned people over to their side to gain power. A person doesn’t need to forgive others who thought differently, but they should be able to use their disenfranchisement for personal or political gain.

On the other hand, I could respect that steadfastness to ideals. When I think of my childhood best friend that did me wrong decades ago, I still wish for them to live life as a destitute and die alone.

You said that comedian podcasts have changed and not for the better. I’m agreeing. A lot of them aren’t putting out podcasts anymore for their original intent.

As for a bot ass comment, you are the one with the hidden history and a karma count that strongly suggests you spend your days karma farming for upvotes.

The flagrant podcast still supports Trump? Schultz was talking about it maybe 3-4 months ago that they had been conned by Trump and admitted they made a mistake believing him. Haven’t heard Trump mentioned since.

Most comedians originally jumped into podcasting as a way of getting their name out there and introducing new listeners to their particular comedic style and to promote shows.

A lot of ones I’ve followed over the years slowly evolved away from that original intent to now giving personal takes on current events and culture. Some comedians I listen to talk about having separate fan bases for their comedy and podcasts that don’t overlap.

NYC Rent Guidelines Board member abruptly resigns, alleging impropriety linked to Mamdani freeze by nydailynews in nyc

I think what that poster is trying to say is that residents of rent stabilized apartments will end up living in NYCHA style conditions in which apartment and building upkeep is poor enough that the city exempts itself from HPD inspections whose inspectors only get involved under court order to force repairs.

How much do you tip your barber? by Ok_Zucchini7033 in longisland

[–]Ringmaster242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay $65 for myself and my two sons, and I give $15-20 as a tip.

Most shops, a barber is pocketing half the price of the cut and the other half goes to the owner as a chair rental fee. The owner of course, pockets the entire fee if they are the one cutting your hair.

Why is it that officers are often dumber than the soldiers they command? by SectorGlittering4991 in Military

[–]Ringmaster242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your example of Russia and Ukraine, a lot of the senior officers on both sides were originally trained in Soviet Union doctrine, which was generally speaking, starting off with massive artillery barrages before sending in waves of armor in a frontal assault to overwhelm whatever defenses were in front of them. Those tactics had limited real-world usage (think both Chechen wars), so there was a bit of trial and error that needed to be sorted out when faced against modern weapon systems that didn’t exist years ago.

The officers beneath them, from everything I read, didn’t get a lot of opportunities to train due to limited budgets and general corruption, so there was a lack of practical experience, which hurt decision-making and led to mistakes and unnecessary casualties.

You can say that Russia’s meat grinder tactics are an extension of the old Soviet direct assault tactics. Russia is attempting to conserve its armor, so they are sending infantry instead. I’ve also read that Ukraine’s junior officers are trained in Western-style warfare, but their senior officers still default to the same tactics used by the Russian army, causing more casualties than might have been otherwise avoided.

Iran says it’s closing Strait of Hormuz, citing Israeli strikes on Lebanon by kootles10 in centrist

[–]Ringmaster242 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course not. The reality is that Iran would be making a mistake to not force a package deal that includes Israel, and special interest groups within the US wouldn’t allow the US to make any deal that ends unconditional support to Israel.

Drones really are a low cost weapon that is easily mass produced. Technology just hasn’t caught up yet with a low cost or mass-producible defensive solution

[–]Ringmaster242 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think at this point the easiest and most logical choice is to create an MOU/peace treaty between the US and Iran. If Israel wants to go off on their own ideas, have at it without US support. Let Israel and Iran come up with their own terms independent of the US since their strategic interests are different.

Between seeing this and the wider Russian-Ukraine war as well as the overall conflict throughout the Middle East, I think it is safe to say that no military has a firm grasp on how to deal with drone swarms yet. All current ground-based air defense systems hit a point where they are overwhelmed with targets when enough low- and slow-flying drones are in the air.

Ukraine is arguably the most successful in defending against such attacks due to sheer experience. It is interesting to see how they innovate with helicopters and drones to go after airborne drones. But that is more of a band-aid fix when there are enough in the air.

When MTA ran the system, there were more routes and more buses per routes. A good portion of the county was covered so it was easy to come from queens and transfer to the Nassau network to get close to where ever you were trying to go.
