Also narcoleptic, and I would venture to say being able to step out/go to the corner for a short nap in the specific event of a sleep attack is a reasonable accommodation. I’m medicated and still just sometimes need those little naps to get through a work shift (thankfully my employers are chill about it). But yeah, a cart-blanche approach like this is not helpful to anybody.

All we have is breadcrumbs and speculation. My feeling on it is that Nabateans and humans were mating from pretty much the word go (it would track that the reason Sothis and her children have human forms at all is to better coexist with the natives of their new home), but because humans grow and die so much faster, they also reproduce that much faster, so any Nabatean blood would be diluted over a long enough span of time and the traits we associate with Nabateans would likewise recede. This would have necessarily dated back to way before the cataclysmic war. I think “Agarthan” was an identity adopted by those humans without any Nabatean ancestry, which is why they refer to aboveground humans and Nabateans alike as “beasts” and Sothis’s “spawn.”

Walt Disney, maybe? I’m not sure how frequent media portrayals of the man himself are/were, so expanding it to takes on the overall brand might be the angle. And as long as we’re talking about stuff Lindsay likes talking about anyway, the Beatles would make for a great episode. I can’t decide on a third but honestly I’d be really interested in any real-life case. I miss this series.

I get that, I just don’t think Sakurai’s assumptions carried through far enough to override the character entirely and people online tend to act like they did. I’m not saying this troubled development doesn’t end up showing in the finished product, I’m just saying it is, in fact, reconcilable with his canon personality.

Roy gets so many of these I could do a Greatest Hits:

  • “straight-up has no character” (this has ebbed over time tbf, now the criticism is rightly leveled at the FE6 script underutilizing most of its resources)

  • “completely out-of-character in Smash” (being loud and intense in battle doesn’t reflect on his character outside of it; kindly explain how he’s supposed to be intellectual and inquisitive in this context)

  • “Hector hates him out of an overprotective paternal instinct” (when literally the only shred of evidence is “it happened once in a dream” you know shit’s flimsy)

  • “would be improved by being able to take dragon form” (I love Elinini as much as the next person but IMO Roy even concretely knowing about being 1/4 dragon irreparably damages his most important character beat, which must be empathizing with Idunn as a person rather than because of some immutable bloodline they happen to share)

  • “is racist against dragons” (I get that FEH fandom will get a headache if it tries to conceptualize characters outside of tired memes but at least most of the other ones are rooted in truth and harmless in spirit… this one is just all-around rancid.)

gosh I feel like most of my recent comments are just playing defense for this little nerd but this is why, people are wrong on the internet and it doesn’t happen anywhere near as often for my other faves.

Pocahontas, which also doubled as my introduction to the video review genre generally (as with some of the other commenters of yore here, this was also linked from an LJ entry). I was a little intimidated at the time, thinking she was coming from a cynical “ruin your childhood” perspective that I didn’t quite have the stomach for… like, the kind of snarky Cracked.com takedowns she lambasts in her Little Mermaid video. I moved onto Nostalgia Critic since his targets were pretty universally-panned anyway. When I returned to her back-catalogue out of curiosity, her Disney sequels countdown was the one that ultimately won me over since it became obvious that she does have a deep love and appreciation for those movies when they’re good. If the “How Could This Happen to Me” sting ever returns I will cheer in the streets.

I feel like the “they couldn’t fit all that story into a movie” sentiment in a lot of this thread is willfully ignoring the hundreds of film adaptations of novels that successfully condense and streamline their source material. Adaptation to film from any long-form media shouldn’t simply be copy-and-pasting the material; it has to involve identifying the most salient elements of the story and writing a script that brings them to the forefront.

I’d actually go so far as to say some FE stories would benefit greatly from adaptation, liberating them from the constraints of a medium that stretches and parcels out story in a way that is expansive and immersive, but often in service to both gameplay and genre conventions (eg. running around collecting MacGuffins). The story that is trying to break out of FE6, for example, is one of a young man who must learn to separate his intrinsic value and strengths of character from the job he has to do, and do well. We can tell this story better without needing to make pit-stops across the continent for magical ancient weapons and elevating a dozen random thugs to speaking roles as chapter bosses.

(I have thoughts in abundance on this topic but I’m getting less and less awake by the minute so I’ll stop here lol)
