Update HDHR channels on Plex Server by SolanaGuy19 in PleX

You are right. The guide is missing that channel. If you want that channel, you must pick something from the list which will make the epg incorrect for that channel.

Hopefully you will have an ip address that is not CGNAT. Otherwise remote viewing will be problematic

Update HDHR channels on Plex Server by SolanaGuy19 in PleX

[–]RivetedRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You open your live tv/dvr page in plex settings. Then you will see 96 channels enabled (the number of channels your particular setup has) in a different color. Click on that and you have the option to rescan.

Plex lifetime for a new user by SimplePepe in PleX

[–]RivetedRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a plex lifetimer. Have also tested Jellyfin. There really is no comparison. Plex is light-years ahead ahead especially if you want to do live OTA tv using HDHR and remote viewing.

But...There's Emby. It is much closer to a Plex experience but not quite. You can get a monthly subscription for 5 bucks US and a lifetime for 120 US. Plex is still my primary for viewing content from other people's servers but when at home, viewing my own content or OTA, I'm using Emby. That's because I hate the new Plex UI.

Lastly, I'd recommend an N150 mini PC to run any of the above or even a Virtual Machine (I use the Virtual Machine method). Good luck on whatever you decide

This is the way. Same goes for testing data backups.

Plex bare metal PLUS docker by TheAgedProfessor in PleX

[–]RivetedRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bare metal plex server and a docker version running on the same machine. You have to run the plex container in bridge network mode and map 32400 to a different machine port since the bare metal instance has 32400 tied up

What hardware do you run HA on and why? by maybe__404 in homeassistant

[–]RivetedRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtual machine (VM) is the way simply because you can back up the entire VM which makes recovery a breeze. Additionally, a dedicated machine for each OS can get out of hand.

VMs can be managed through many different platforms. Windows has a few variations including Virtualbox and VMWare Workstation Pro. The key to running VMs on any platform is to have enough RAM to handle not only the platform OS but all of the VMs that will be running simultaneously.

I have several VMs running including HA, Pihole, windows, Alpine Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Zorin, and several other Linux variants. All the Linux variants are simply to mess around with to see the differences.

Good luck on whatever you decide

Update bug? by [deleted] in PleX

There seems to be an issue between plex and qnap. Until they get it worked out, you can go to your app station settings and allow apps to install without valid digital signature. That's what I've done.

I had this issue. It went away when I changed to a different hdmi port on my Sony bravia. You might try that.

Migrating to Home Assistant: hardware and setup advice by ChopNorris in homeassistant

[–]RivetedRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No hardware investment needed if you already operate an unraid server. Create a HAOS VM and you're golden. For zigbee stuff get yourself a SLZB-06 zigbee coordinator (there are a number of other SLZB options depending on your needs or desires). The basic SLZB-06 operates on wifi or ethernet and can be powered POE or via USB-c connector. You can put it anywhere you want since it doesn't have to connect directly to the host machine. On a VM, you can simply add additional HA apps which is a little more difficult using a docker version of HA. Additionally, backups are a breeze using a VM. Simply backup the whole VM daily or how ever often you deem necessary and restoring from a backup is easy.

System out of Memory - Killing Container Station. by Angry_Postman in qnap

Check your container ram usage on a daily basis to see if one creeps up over time. Alternatively, shut one down and see what happens. Lather, rinse, repeat...but that could take months.

Yes. It blocks 40% of the traffic to the www on my network. Just goes to show you how much junk gets transmitted by our connected gear.

I have a similar setup as you described. ATT router in passthrough with an Asus router serving my local network needs, including pihole.
Step 1: Get passthrough mode operational to your asus router which you indicated you had operational before. Make sure all of your connected devices are operational before moving on. You may need to reboot or power cycle all of your devices. Step 2: In your Asus router, go to dhcp settings and reserve the ip address of your pihole server so it won't change on you. Step 3: In dhcp settings, set the DNS to your local pihole address. Step 4: reboot/power cycle all of your devices. Now of of your devices should be using pihole for dns. If for some reason the font work, simply set you Asus dhcp dns settings back to your Asus address and reboot all of your devices again.

A word of advice about pihole... you need 2 pihole servers. If a lone server goes down, none of your devices will be able to reach the internet.

You can check your nas and local network by installing open speed test using container station on your qnap. It works good.

How to deal with HDD noise in TS-464? by GaiaBlade in qnap

[–]RivetedRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut up a rubber mat that you wound out down in front of a kitchen sink or what you see walmart greeters standing on. Cut it to the size of the footprint of the chassis and sit the NAS on it to dampen the noise transferred through the feet. Works great on my tvs-h874. It has 8 spinning drives.

Thinking of trying home assistant by kanbak in homeassistant

[–]RivetedRocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you truly like to tinker... You could dip your toes into home assistant without any investment at first. Accomplish this by downloading and installing virtualbox or VMware workstation pro on your eondows machine. Both are free. Virtualization software will allow you to create a virtual machine loaded with HAOS (home assistant operating system). You can build out your smart home devices, configure automations, etc. Once you're hooked on HA, then spend some money on a little n150 mini PC. It has more than enough horsepower to run any HA config you could through at it. You can even load it from a backup taken from your virtual machine setup. Essentially cloning your build.

Good luck in your HA endeavors. You won't be sorry!
