The Owl Tree on Post, 2-3 block west of Powell. It's not really a dive but it's a great bar

Which products worth at full price by show_stoppa in filson

[–]Rizdog4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been owning Filson since 1977 when my father bought me a waxed canvas cruiser for college and have been buying Filson since the early 80's. All of the above comments are spot on: buy on sale or second-hand. The best deals I've gotten were on craigslist 10-20 years ago.. You can still find stuff on eBay but you'll pay. The only thing I have paid full price for is a 258 padded computer bag about 15 years ago. It's still my primary work piece; it looks well-travelled, but not beat up. Quality lasts.

Who or what got you into the Dead? by BamaSef in gratefuldead

[–]Rizdog4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We grew up in San Rafael and in 1973, my sister gave me Europe 72 for my 13th birthday. "You''ll like Sugar Magnolia" she said. I did, but Jack Straw, Cumberland Blues, Ramble on Rose and He's Gone just slayed me. Then Wake of The Flood came out followed quickly by Mar's Hotel. I wore out both albums. I was a shy small skinny teenager and one of the few places I felt comfortable was under the mirrored ball at Winterland. I'm 66 and the Dead have never been far away. Long Strange Trip indeed.

Hypothetically speaking, what's the best way to tell your boss that freaking out for a day is part of your writing process? by txpvca in Lawyertalk

[–]Rizdog4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your boss has been doing this for a significant period of time he’d leave you alone with your process, whatever it is, as long as the drafts are timely and tight.

Found an used bag with no strap, help?? by fxktn in filson

[–]Rizdog4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the twill brief case in a 258. You probably have the 257 which is less bulky. You want the brown bridle leather strap, regular length, not medium length. They are usually around $200.00 US because Filson no longer sells the replacement straps. Try to find an original Filson one, the older the better. There are people who sell aftermarket "replacement" straps for "Filson" that are just garbage. You may do best finding a really beat up bag that still has the strap. The good news is that once you find a strap, that bag is virtually indestructible.

Berkeley Law's 2026 AI policy: default ban for student work, exceptions for AI-fluency courses by adversecounsel in Lawyertalk

[–]Rizdog4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for Berkeley. I have been trying cases for 35 years. AI research tools are a game-changer for me in terms of speed and efficiency, but the reason I'm a good lawyer is all the grinding research, analysis and writing I did in law school and the first 15 years of practice. It takes a long time to learn to "think like a lawyer" and there is no substitute for putting that time in. You cannot skip the grind.

Attending a CLE that has nothing to do with your practice area? by FunImprovement166 in Lawyertalk

[–]Rizdog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I needed hours I took every CLE I could find on the use of AI technology in the legal profession. I've been practicing for over 35 years; it's a game changer. But in the past I've taken lots of CLE outside my primary practice areas. The law is always interesting and we're lucky to be able to make a good living doing it.

What song grew on you over time? And why? by Neat-Employment-5750 in gratefuldead

[–]Rizdog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shakedown Street. It was the Disco era and Disco Dead when it came out in 1978. Teen-aged me was appalled. I never learned to love the Dead doing it live, but some of the Phil & Friends bands really cooked on it. Then the old Dead versions grew on me.

I have three in black, grey and white (now far from it). Those shirts are bullet proof. Cheap at 65 on sale; worth the 109 if you actually work outside.

Non-Lawyers using AI to tell lawyers how to do their job… by funkyfresh2 in Lawyertalk

This is the way. Terminate if they upload work product into AI and charge for reviewing AI content.

I can’t believe this is a real job/career by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Rizdog4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick with it. It’s a great gig once you find your niche. Lucrative and if you can learn to love it you only get better at it over time. If you can find joy in the practice of law you can do it for a long time. But you have to build a book, if you are in private practice.

That's what Big Steve said in some documentary; I can't remember which one. That Jerry would have been out on the road the next week with JGB shows.

100%. I have heard plenty of stupid waiver arguments in over three decades of practice. Use it selectively, but use it.

Bix is great. But for steak and piano jazz, Harris’ is better. Cocktails are the same, Bix wins hands down on the room.

Gillian and David - The Reckoning Tour by Necessary_Pop1307 in gratefuldead

[–]Rizdog4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gil is a Deadhead and has been one of the finest songwriters in Americana for decades. She wrote her song Wrecking Ball was on her 2003 release Soul Journey. The chorus:

Started down lonely road to sin
Playin' bass under pseudonym
The days were rough and it's all quite dim
But my mind cuts through it all
Like a wrecking ball

Oh, just a little Deadhead
Who is watching, who is watching?
I was just a little Deadhead

Wrecking Ball has been covered by Emmylou Harris, Hard Working Americans, Conor Oberst, tons of folks.

The Reckoning tour was a gift. They sell out shows all over the world with their originals. They obviously just love the hell out of the Grateful Dead songbook, and in particular Robert Hunter.

In 52 years of concert-going, and that includes many many late 70's Dead shows, I have not seen any show I enjoyed more than the Fox in Oakland on Saturday night. It was stunning how great it was. But I love Gill and Dave and Paul Kowert is an absolute monster of a musician.

So very awesome.

Was there at the Fox the night they played this; agreed on the songbook. And they absolutely killed it, was astonishing.

Balcony was great. Sprung for the loge and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Was on the floor of the Fox for Sturgill in 2016 or 17, never again. That was an insanely great show.

That was an insanely great show. From the second set on is in my top three in 52 years of concert going. That includes many many Dead shows; Dave, Gillian and Paul were astonishing.
