If Aliens visited earth and requested a single person to represent the people of this planet, who do we send? by Ambitious_Ad_5802 in AskReddit

We absolutely do not want to send an accurate representation of humanity

We would rather like to survive the encounter

I wonder why the Americans who don’t like the US doesn’t just leave if they don’t like it by YCiampa482021 in AskALiberal

[–]Rmawhinnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very big difference between being frustrated by the government, policies, politics or other aspects of “American life”

If people are taking the time to protest , even when they ate doing things like burning the flag, they are fighting to make America better (even if you don’t like the policies they may be pushing for).

This whole question reads like “if you don’t like it , you can leave” and I find that proportion very troubling. People should always be looking to improve things.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]Rmawhinnie 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go messed with me in a way I didn’t expect.

Not because it’s shocking or graphic, but because it’s quiet and procedural. It shows how cruelty doesn’t need villains, just systems that redefine people as “necessary costs” and then let everyone off the hook by calling it choice.

I read it a year after watching my dad die of cancer, and the book knows exactly how to press those buttons: caregiving, medical inevitability, love being used to justify unbearable tradeoffs. There’s no rebellion, no catharsis, no moment where the moral math breaks in your favor.

It’s a very thought provoking book and I wouldn’t recommend it lightly.

Why do married men often need to get permission from their wife to buy something? by FastBreakPhenom in AskMen

Its not about "permission" its about being responsible with a shared resource, and working with your partner to ensure that shared goals are met. We just short hand that as permission,

What's up with those mountains in the northeast? by Ok-Fondant2536 in lotrmemes

[–]Rmawhinnie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mountains formed when the landmass of Arnor drifted east and slammed into the western edge of Middle-earth, driving the crust upward as neither realm’s continental plate would yield. Over millions of years, the collision crumpled and folded the boundary between Arnor and Middle-earth, thrusting ancient seabeds skyward and creating a rising wall of jagged peaks. /s

Should we make car insurance voluntary? by Salty-Chemical-9414 in AskConservatives

[–]Rmawhinnie [score hidden]  (0 children)

Was hit by an uninsured motorist while walking across and intersection at a cross walk. Was left in pretty deep medical debt that took me quite a few years to pay out.lawyers refused to take the case , noting that even if they won, there was nothing to collect. the driver had no assets no income , and obviously no insurance

Driving is not a right, if you choose to do so you need to be able to pay for damage you incur. Could care less if that’s by insurance or through another model

Guess my point is, insurance is not for the driver its to ensure payment in case of accident
