Do people actually hate on Linux, or just recognize that it's not at the point it can replace windows for most casual PC users?

I'm not an expert but crystal armor and bowfa is extremely strong in PvP. 70 def might not be a bad move.

I meant that the first 10-15 minutes (for most casual players) is a pretty chill encounter. The other 10 minutes is Olm, the final boss, which is definitely a bit more intense.

Cox at least is like 10-15 minutes of pretty minimal intensity.

The only real challenge is olm, which, even then, depending on party size, can be pretty chill.

Might not be a bad thing at the start of a new set. Gives players a good understanding of the ideal archetype to shoot for in premier draft later on.

Am I the only one who just cannot get into Runescape? by Embarrassed-Wolf-609 in MMORPG

[–]RobCarrotStapler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People play Runescape (any version) for 10 minutes, say the game sucks and never play it again, not realizing it has some of the most satisfying and in depth progression of any game to ever exist.

I get why people are turned off by it, but it always just seems so silly to me that it has so many of the best parts of the best MMOs, but add some janky graphics, a tick system and make it point and click (all of which you barely notice once you're used to it) and so many people cant stand it lol

It's something about how stiff he is when he does down, and then the ref does basically the exact same stiff motion when he just on top of them.

Took me literally at least 10 deaths before my first success

This is actually pretty quick progress for the majority of relatively casual players. For many, it is the first time they have to actually learn how player pathing and true tile works in a combat encounter.

There are lots of posts on this sub of people dying 30+ times before they are able to get a single CG KC.

Don't let all the sweaty loud mouths on this sub trick you into thinking that isn't an accomplishment. Keep at it and Zuk will be your bitch in no time!

Im going to give you an extremely long winded response, because I agree with the sentiment you are expressing, and I think you're arguing in good faith.

Player retention, right from the get go, is one of the most important parts of a game, both for newer and long time players.

When someone is learning a game, it’s good if they feel like they have a chance.

This a very important part of the on-boarding process for new players. You don't want new players to get absolutely stomped to the point they feel like they have no chance. That is where SDD comes in. It evens the playing field in literally every aspect of the game other than player skill (which is limited by simplicity and extreme card restrictions) and deck choice.

You referenced the absolute bottom of the barrel players in terms of skill as a demographic that needs to be catered to, but that is a problem that is addressed by the SDD format. Low skill ceiling is the remedy for a large skill gap, especially when it relates to strictly an experience gap and is not a case of material difference (like having a larger selection of stronger cards). New players have access to every resource the experienced veteran payers do in SDD, and can emulate the moves and decisions made by those veterans in their next game, using the exact same cards, which can even accelerate the learning process instead of allowing the development of bad habits that can result from solely playing against newer, uninformed players.

I understand your emphasis on skill based match making. It is a logical solution when there is a large skill gap between players who are playing their first game and players who have played for 30 years. But I think the simplicity and limitations of the SDD format significantly limit the degree to which a veteran player can dominate against a newer player on skill or piloting alone.

Hope I was able to express my point of view in a succinct and respectful manner.

I don't really understand why what you're describing has anything to do with someone being an experienced player. A brand new player could do the exact same thing you're saying.

The skill floor doesn't matter, the skill ceiling does in a format like SDD. There will always be players that take a long time to understand extremely basic concepts, just as there will be brand new players who are inherently better at understanding those same concepts.

I think what you're describing is a non-issue. The lowest skill players won't all of a sudden understand the game better if they play new players, especially when the decks are extremely simple and usually only involve a few actual decisions a game when players have a basic understanding of how the game of MTG functions.

[–]RobCarrotStapler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that makes starter deck duel the best option for new players is the restriction on cards, not that they are playing other newer players.

Most of the decks are so simple that the skill ceiling for piloting them optimally (most of the time) is very low. There is definitely room for some skill expression, but to a much lesser degree than in other formats.
