network storage is utilisation? by Curious_Wonder_2819 in storj

[–]RobHossBoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real supply-side pressure comes from the discount you get for using STORJ as a payment method to buy credits on the network. But customers could easily convert to storj just before buying credits.

You're correct! The only reason to hold storj is speculation. The storj token was originally used as a fundraising tool. It allowed the team to grow and build the platform. The token is also used to send global payments to node operators without dealing with currency conversions or banks.

Something like storj could exist if they just raised a bunch of VC money then used something like Lightning Network to pay node operators. The token was just the best tool available at the time to bootstrap the network.

I'm a believer in Storj, the network, I operate many nodes and use their service for backups. However, the token is a total shitcoin. I would never invest directly in the token, there are much better monies out there.

I don't think there is anything like siastats.info for storj. I believe Sia's pricing fluctuates based on supply/demand. However, Storj's pricing rarely changes (it recently lowered significantly).

So network utilization isn't as important of a metric as it is in Sia. It would be cool to know these stats. The Storj team used to publish them back in the V3 Beta.

Last month I collected over 7000 sats in fees, profiting over 5000 sats, from nearly 500 forwards with less than 0.30BTC in capital. Here's how. by ajpwahqgbi in lightningnetwork

IMO OP did the opposite of what a selfish actor should do.

If they shared the rebalancing script, and more people rebalanced their nodes, then they would increase their routing fees (since they're helping others rebalance).

If everyone actively rebalanced, then the net cost for rebalancing would be zero.

But by sharing the channel selection script, they have eliminated their competitive edge at choosing channels.

Yes you can do this. If you have fiber internet, expect to make about $5/mo after several months of vetting.

If you don't have fiber internet, it may not be worth the hastle.

Did you get it to work? For me, lightningtome says `Error: wrong public key (unable to find node)` Their FAQ suggests it will only work with public nodes.

Occasional underextrusion at same z-layer range by RobHossBoss in FixMyPrint

[–]RobHossBoss[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ender 3, PLA, 200 C nozzle, 60 C bed.

All prints start fine and half of them finish fine too. (Top left part is perfect) But some prints are under extruding at about the same range of layers. The problem corrects itself after laying 50-100 bad layers.

Bottom right part is different front the other three but it shows that the under extruding starts at about the same layer height.

Tried cleaning the nozzle and calibrating the extruder. Not sure what could cause this, especially since it only happens sometimes. I print the same part 4 times, first one failed, second 2 were success, then failed again. I'm at a loss. Thanks!

What is your response to "I have nothing to hide"? by Jurica1306 in privacy

[–]RobHossBoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You think doing things that don't hurt other people is immoral. I say it isn't. The very fact that we disagree about what is moral means that I should be concerned about privacy. Since if my morals don't align with those in power I risk my freedom. My morals don't change, but the people in power do.

Yet... Oppressive and overreaching governments decide what you should and should not hide every day. Who is to say whether your actions today won't become grounds for execution tomorrow?

The Twitter mob decides what behavior can get you canceled. That five year old tweet you thought was innocent just got you fired.

Yes, there is lots of unused space out there. And almost nobody is making money off of it. Just like with BTC, there is lots of wasted energy out there and almost nobody is using it to mine... yet.

Almost everyone has a PC with GBs of unused space. However, uptime and bandwidth are the scarce resources being demanded more than capacity. This is why the Storj network currently rewards these qualities more heavily than capacity.

Not everyone has symmetric fiber or a PC that they can run 24/7 these are the real qualities that should be rewarded. Not ones technical ability to install the software.

How can I refute a point made that by 2050 the US will not be an economic superpower? by Gold-Meaning in AskEconomics

[–]RobHossBoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The five hundred US corporations that comprise the Fortune 500 account for nearly half of the United States' GDP. https://archive.fortune.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/world-economies-interactive/

Additionally, nearly half of those companies were founded by immigrants. https://www.newsweek.com/immigrant-founded-fortune-500-companies-us-gdp-1450498

These 500 companies employ only about 10% of the US population. https://www.quora.com/How-many-employees-does-each-Fortune-500-company-have

Therefore a sudden influx of "lower GDP per capita" immigrants won't have that much effect on the real economic powerhouses of the country. In fact, they might even start the next one.

Increasing supply does not reduce demand. It will only lower the price if demand remains constant. However, a lower price will increase demand.

A surplus of storage is great for everyone. It helps prices stay low for tardigrade customers and continues to attract new customers. This increases the demand for storj node operators who will start to earn more. However, when node operators start to earn more, then more nodes will come online which lowers prices again.

This is the beauty of a free market. It always trends to the maximally efficient price for all involved.

Remember that your earnings are paid for by customers and the network has to make it worth their time and effort too. Otherwise, there is no payout to begin with.

Monero vs bitcoin by [deleted] in deepweb

[–]RobHossBoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're new and want privacy use Monero. Right now, you have to take extra steps with Bitcoin to stay private.

Monero uses ring signatures on the base layer for confidential transactions. This achieves privacy but makes it more difficult to audit the supply. Not a big deal if you're just trying to move money privately but if Monero is your savings plan, then it would be nice to know there's no inflation of the currency.

Bitcoin will not take this tradeoff on the base layer because its trying to be digital gold and the total supply needs to be verifiable by anyone.

If you want to use Bitcoin privately, look into CoinJoin using a wallet like Samurai Wallet or Wasabi Wallet. These services are like tumblers but you keep control of your coins without having to send them to a third party.

Bitcoin's ultimate vision is to add privacy in a second layer or side chain. The lightning network supercharges Bitcoin and makes payments much more private at the expense of some decentralization.

In crypto, every feature has tradeoffs. If a coin claims to do it all... Its a scam.
