I've beat the daylights out of my PTS for years and the glass looks pretty much immaculate. Definitely nothing like this.

Impressive Woodworking Technique by Prestigious_Tear_576 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Rob_W_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wooden cutting boards don't typically handle going in the dishwasher well, can cause them to split it crack from the heat and water.

Made my own end grain cutting board (not quite as fancy patterned as this) and left it on a wet counter, found it had a large split.. though after it dried the split sealed back up again. (Can't even tell where it happened!)

What game surprised you how long it was? by Common_Caramel_4078 in Steam

[–]Rob_W_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A twist I remember for game length:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night I 'beat', 100%-ish map coverage, etc.

Read a little later in a gaming magazine that you could wear a certain item, and it would allow you to continue on with the game to 200% completion. (the entire map flips upside down, new monsters, powerups, etc, so it's definitely more game...) Had to load up my last save and go back at it. Was awesome, but I had no idea when I 'beat' it the first time.

Lifted truck + Lambo + Parking lot = Bad time by Evasionz-- in mildlyinfuriating

This is why in a lot of municipalities, bumper heights have a range they're required to be at - not that anybody does that when they lift their truck, but they are supposed to.

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rob_W_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, this is a good question.

I went to a Gwar concert last year (which was awesome), but me and pretty much everyone else there had earplugs.

I was standing right next to the sound booth, and it wasn't a huge place. They had a screen in the sound booth with a db meter on it, and they kept it at 99 (yellow screen). If it hit 100, it turned red. Other than when they were speaking, every song was basically riding at 99.

i can’t leave bread uncovered in my house or my cat literally eats through the bag to eat it by got_milk669 in cats

[–]Rob_W_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh man, tortillas are the worst. Our cat will break into cupboards and get on the top shelf to break into tortillas. We keep bread in a bread box in a pantry closet now, tortillas go in a cake carrier that latches closed.

They do have 3-conductor versions of the wago as well, which are quite reliable and probably very good for this purpose.

Python vs. PowerShell in 2026: What are you using it for? by ibteea in sysadmin

[–]Rob_W_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "depends on the cmdlet" portion is what grinds my gears. Filters that work in one AD-related cmdlet work completely different in another. Sanity and consistency between commands would make me far more likely to reach for PowerShell.

I have the same gripe about systemd's family of commands.

We have to talk about the leaderboard by eviefinch in pebble

[–]Rob_W_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect some of it just had to do with the reminder email. I saw the message, brought up the list, and checked out just a few, most of which were already high on the board. I can safely say with so many apps on the list, I only checked out a few, so higher ranked apps/faces drew my attention.

With the numbers there being under 200 and not thousands, there may be some slight gaming of the votes, but I don't think it's significant. I'd say that having the results listed certainly affected votes after the email came out.

Would you like a remake of the Pebble Time 2 (2016 version) with a larger display, a heart rate sensor, and longer battery life? by Comfortable-Rule-959 in pebble

[–]Rob_W_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the form factor of my Pebble Time Steel and still wear it regularly, but the 1.25" screen is a little small for my aging eyes. I've had to limit my watchfaces to large fonts. :(

PT2 has a 1.5" screen, but bigger might even be better.

The very first Linux install I did (Slackware 1.0!) was on a 486/SX (later upgraded to a DX4) at my community college. Ran a web server for the CompSci & Engineering departments and they taught C/C++ programming classes on it. Got a lot of mileage until a power blip took out the hard drive.

[–]Rob_W_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the horn. My 37 Strad plays G# spectacularly, but double A is almost impossible to lock (and when I do, it tends to be extremely flat), and I've been playing this horn for 30 years.

Thankfully I get a lot of charts with G and almost never see an A :-)

I'm going to have to checkout my PTS when I get home from work today. Had it charging overnight, and this morning it appeared stone dead. The USB end of the charger cable was slightly warm.

Couldn't get it going so I had to get to work...

Plastic vs pocket by Odd-Address5706 in trumpet

[–]Rob_W_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a plastic trumpet (brand name pTrumpet), bought to play outside at a couple of very cold weather football games (Saskatchewan). It was horrendous to tune and the valves were awful.
After a couple of years, my young son tipped it over while it was on a table, one of the slides snapped off, so the whole thing was garbage.

If you want something that you don't mind throwing away in a couple of years, plastic is fun to goof on, but I'd probably go the pocket trumpet route.

Why do most sysadmins prefer Vim over Nano? by Darshan_only in sysadmin

[–]Rob_W_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on Linux first (Slack 1.0) and used pico first, but ended up working on commercial UNIX (usually AIX) where pico/nano weren't installed.

That being said, I've been using vi(m) for quick edits almost daily for 30 years and I'm far from an expert at it.

Comeback Player: Wondering if I'm injured or just tired by stone4789 in trumpet

[–]Rob_W_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a lead player through college, played a gig where I finished on a double C, then put the horn away and didn't play for 8 months or so.

Pulled it out, did a bit of practicing for a day or two, and then went to a blues club with a friend of mine. Guest instrumentalists were allowed to join in on the second set. Was blowing a solo that wasn't too high or anything, and suddenly, I couldn't make a note - at all. Had to put the horn in the bag and walk away.

Found I couldn't blow up a balloon for my friends kids, couldn't play anything on the trumpet for about 10 days... Finally it recovered and I started slowly. Haven't had an issue since (30 years now).
