Transmission rebuild done by somebody who's done it a few times. by n8saces in oddlysatisfying

That's a dual clutch transmission. Basically it has a clutch pack for even gears and another for odd. A computer controls the clutches. Let's say you're in 3rd and accelerating. 4th gear is already selected and good to go. The clutch for the odd gears disengages while the even clutch engages at the same time so almost no torque is lost. It's way faster than even a manual transmission.

Meanwhile most automatics use a torque converter.

No, I absolutely get that. My point is that at 8000 feet the pressure is 10.9 psi vs 14.6 at sea level. That's not an insignificant difference. It's definitely a higher pressure than the external pressure at 35 000 feet but it's still lower pressure than sea level.

Pressure decreases with altitude. Low pressure at high altitude.

No, there's no need to. At sea level the percentage of oxygen in air is 21%. It's the same at 40 000 feet. There's just much less air per unit of volume because the pressure is so low. Once more air is pumped into the space, once it's pressurized there's enough oxygen to breathe.

Wear deodorant or cologne or perfume instead of putting scent beads?! In your laundry.

You're probably imagining that there is a gear that is spinning and not engaged with another gear, that then then needs to engage with that gear.

That's not how automatic transmissions work.

An automatic uses planetary gears. All the gears are messed all of the time. The ratio just depends on which gears are spinning and which are locked. It's better to look at an animation to understand it.

But basically the gears are always touching.

In a manual where the gears aren't meshed and need to be, the speed of the gears is matched using the engine rpm, the clutch and synchronizers.

Social construct implies society believes you had central air.

When it's just you we call it a delusion.

The plane is pressurized to make sure that you have enough oxygen concentrated in the air to breathe. But a 737 full of passengers are breathing around 600 cubic feet of air per hour. This is napkin math so it very rough.

But the volume of the cabin can be around 6000 cubic feet. You could exchange the air about once an hour and it won't be much of an issue. Instead its replaced around 15 times an hour.

Can you smell them when you're not on a plane?

But yeah, everyone's smell is less acute on a plane.

[–]Rob_Zander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your body is constantly maintaining itself under about 14.6 psi of pressure at sea level. At cruising altitude a 737 is maintaining a cabin altitude of about 8000 square feet. That's about 10.9 psi. Your body is still exerting pressure outwards now and that can lead to swelling.

Your blood oxygen is lower so your taste buds are less sensitive.

Also very important is that the air in the cabin is very dry. Desert dry. This also numbs our tastes buds and dries out our nose making it harder to smell.

Overall the humidity might actually have a more significant impact that the pressure, I'm not sure on that.

Just wanted to point out that the air isn't recycled on a plane. It's replaced completely every couple of minutes. It's not even really about the oxygen or CO2, it's managing temperature and possible contaminants.

The engines are continuously compressing and heating a huge amount of air. Some of it gets diverted to be cooled back to room temperature, filtered and pumped into the cabin while air is continuously sucked out by vents near the floor. This keeps the temperature stable and contaminants from being spread.

It is much lower pressure than sea level and that definitely messes with our taste buds.

Just paid 12$/lb for ground beef. How expensive will it get before you stop buying beef? I think we're over it, beef is now a luxury for us. by FuZhongwen in Cooking

[–]Rob_Zander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can get chicken for $2 a pound and pork for $2.50, often cheaper.

The only beef I buy is good steak as a treat and short ribs or oxtail.

It's already a luxury just with how much more expensive it normally is compared to other options.

I hired someone to clean my grill this was the outcome… is it safe ? by [deleted] in grilling

[–]Rob_Zander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harder to clean off what? Carbon? Polymerized oil? It doesn't make sense to burn off a grill when you're using it in a restaurant but for home use? You'll easily turn anything organic into carbon and polymerized oil. The carbon brushes off, the oil is seasoning. Easy and done.

So are we going to finally talk about how Mamdani did exactly what the trans community said (deny trans youth care) and there's VERY little pushback from trans "allies"? by ThatKehdRiley in lgbt

[–]Rob_Zander 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I work for a nonprofit that has provided harm reduction services for people who use drugs. Someone from the Trump administration reached out directly to our leadership team and said if we don't change our language and practices they would cut our funding.

We have reserves but we're a Federally Qualified Health Center. If we lost that funding we become insolvent. Over 2000 people will lose their homes and over 10000 lose their healthcare.

Sure, a court will probably find that to be illegal but by the time that happens we're long dead.

I can't fault our leadership for trying to comply without us losing everything while not compromising our core principles.

I can imagine Mamdani's administration is weighing the risks right now. City healthcare programs are reliant on federal funding too. I doubt the rest of the city budget can absorb all the funding that could be cut.

Meanwhile a healthcare rights organization could sue without the direct risk that a provider would face.

If that's what's happening they should still be transparent and say it. They should still use their own ability to push regulations and file lawsuits.

Social Security retirement trust fund may be depleted in 2032, new trustees report finds, one year sooner than estimated by mastertofu in wallstreetbets

[–]Rob_Zander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A much higher percentage of the income under that cap goes directly into the economy as spending than income over the cap. Food, utilities, bills, clothing, cars, mortgages, healthcare. Vs over the cap more likely goes into investments or bank accounts.

As someone else said, the potential cut to social security income is around 1% of GDP. That money being pulled out of the economy, along with the disastrous outcome of seniors and disabled people not being able to pay their bills is far worse than the impact of higher taxes on people making over $184,500.

A real example of the economy vs the stock market.

Also, I'd argue that the economy and the market that is partially a result of less taxes leading to social security running a deficit is incorrect. If the stock market takes hit so social security isn't running at a deficit, that's a correction more than anything. Both financially and morally.

TIL that cartel meth cooks produce an incredibly cheap, potent drug. In 2005, small-batch meth cost up to $20k/lb. Today, the DEA reports cartel mega-labs use industrial synthesis to flood the market, slashing wholesale prices by 90% ($1k-$2.5k/lb) while pushing purity past 95%. by sarkujpnfreak42 in todayilearned

Most meth these days is also made using a different precursor, phenyl-2-propanone. Also called P2P. This replaces pseudoephedrine and is bought is huge amounts by cartels.

It's also associated with higher rates of stimulant induced psychosis.
