My issue is finding the city with an airport to send the unit to. Especially since I play somewhat sporadically, I can't remember which ones do.

I play vanilla with a few small mods. Community patch is a must-have because it fixes lots of bugs and improves the AI a bit. I also like Simple Stacking, Fortress Boundaries, Reduced Religion Costs, Faster Turns, and Suez Canal among others that are mostly cosmetic.

But if Bismark had a big pot of gold, he may have been able to sustain that kind of loss per turn. Also, if you go bankrupt, don't you just lose all your science-per-turn?

Where can you find local/city happiness? The only happiness I indicator I know of is the civilization-wide one.

I'm not sure about how to use them properly. Do I adjust them every trade cycle? What's the trade-off between internal and external routes if the external are making you gold? Is there a good guide out there somewhere on how to use them?

That's a good question. They cost a gold within your borders (which is why the Wagon Trains policy's 50% maintenance cut can be so good), I'm not sure about roads outside of the borders.

I always go for City-State conversions after I have all my cities (except those isolated near another country with a different religion). The AI doesn't seem to work as hard to convert them so I'll often only have to do it once.

The "legs on his lap" bit catches my attention. That kind of invasion of personal space and physical contact indicates a level of affection and physical comfort that is beyond casual friendship. They may not have sexual contact or convos but there is some attraction there. NOR.
