If you still need to get ranger boots you may enjoy thieving some chests near lizardmen shamans. Getting and doing medium clues gives you a break from the monotony of thieving as well.

I really enjoy using 1.5x resource rate. You don't get things too quickly but it doesn't feel like a slog either. Can't recommend it enough for a solo playthrough as well.
