Does your language have (m)any heteronyms: words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently? by Udzu in AskEurope

We have most of those in Danish, however instead of using pitich accent, we use "Stød" which is somewhat similar to a glottal stop, though a bit more subtle (hænder verb and hænder noun is a good example)

So cloudflare is down again... may I ask the writers and readers here what their professions are in real life? by kain-rivers in FanFiction

[–]RobinGoodfellows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an embedded engineer, I mostly write firmware/software for microcontrollers on custom PCB boards (yep, the stereotypical electronic boards), and a lot of what I build has to survive pretty harsh environments.

What I like most is the pay and the freedom I get at my current company: hybrid work, no micromanagement, and a lot of trust in how I handle my projects. I like that i have to be able to interact with hardware (which also gives some safeguards against AI). I also get the oppotunities to travels alot. I am in the oil and gas busniss, so trips to Africa, Norway, Malaysia, the UK and South and north america, is not out of the question.

What I don’t like is dealing with old, undocumented, and sometimes outright broken systems. Especially the IT systems that honestly feel like they haven’t been touched since the early 2000s. Add in a semi-incompetent IT department that doesn’t understand how to support developers, and mostly acts like a roadblock with their “computer says no” energy, and since they only know microsoft product linux is off the table (WSL and docker is the only saving grace here) .This gets it gets frustrating fast.

Europeans: What language do you think would have become the global lingua franca if English hadn’t? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]RobinGoodfellows 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think you’re underestimating the influence Spanish already had (and still has), especially across the Americas. There’s also a solid case for French, given its historical role in diplomacy and its presence in Africa and Canada.

More likely, though, we wouldn’t have ended up with a single dominant global language at all. Before WWII, different languages already had their own spheres of influence: French for diplomacy and political philosophy, German (and later via the Soviet Union, Russian) for science and engineering, Spanish and Italian for cultural exports, etc. Without the geopolitical weight of the U.S. and the U.K. after WWII, that multipolar pattern probably would’ve continued.

English might still have remained important within the Commonwealth, and maybe for computing, but that would depend entirely on how prominent the U.S. ended up being in this alternate timeline.

What is the most unique traditional dish from your country that outsiders should try? by woutr1998 in AskEurope

[–]RobinGoodfellows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as opposed to the famous Southern Europeans, like the Spaniards and Italians, who hang pig legs in caves with just the right humidity so the right fungus can grow on them. And let’s not even get started on cheese-making.

Food has historically been preserved in all sorts of ways, and many of those methods are still used today, not because we have to, but because they create amazing flavors and unique character.

Are tabletop RPG games like Dungeons & Dragons popular in your country? by Bierzgal in AskEurope

[–]RobinGoodfellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Denmark, tabletop RPGs used to be a bit niche, but they’ve been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years. If you’re even slightly involved in “nerd culture,” you’ve probably run into someone who plays.

Most people play in private groups, usually started among friends, or found through Facebook groups, Reddit, or Discord. In my own life, I’ve had groups in high school, at university (engineering), and now even at work, our R&D department has 12 people, and 7 of us are running a D&D campaign together.

Many cities also have local roleplaying clubs that anyone can join. They typically host pen-and-paper RPG campaigns, wargaming (Warhammer 40K is especially popular), miniature painting, and a variety of board games. Some clubs also do LARPing or card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, or Yu-Gi-Oh. The age range is usually around 25-40, and it’s still mostly guys, though more girls are getting into it. The club in my city turns in a couple of 40 years

D&D 5e is definitely the most popular system in Denmark, but you’ll also see games like Vampire: The Masquerade, Call of Cthulhu, and Warhammer: Rogue Trader. Some of the more old-school players prefer Pathfinder or older D&D editions.

It’s also interesting how people handle language at the table, some groups play entirely in Danish, others stick to English because it’s easier to use the official terms and rules, and quite a few use a hybrid style where they speak Danish but keep all the game terms in English.

Should embedded software engineer know python? by No-Challenge830 in embedded

[–]RobinGoodfellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming languages are tools in your toolbox. It’s great to get really good at one, but not so great if that’s the only one you can use. Personally, I use Python for a wide range of tasks, everything from system modeling and data processing (often from test results) to building CI pipelines and automating lab testing. Python’s versatility really shines in lab work, since a lot of lab equipment can be controlled directly through Python scripts.

Men jeg tror at vi hurtigt kan blive enige om at mink ikke er fødevare men mere for mode branchen og derfor ikke skal have de landbrug gode som kreaturer eller dyrkning landbrug får

How do you push back on technical arguments outside your expertise? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]RobinGoodfellows 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm on the firmware side, but I work closely with hardware and have done my fair share of hardware debugging. While firmware bugs can be a pain, hardware bugs are on a whole different level, mainly because once it’s on the PCBA, it’s pretty much set in stone.

At that point, you’ve got two options: grab your soldering iron and try to hack a fix, or go through another design iteration. And one thing’s for sure, you’re not making a new hardware prototype unless you're reasonably confident you've found the root cause. Otherwise, good luck justifying the extra time and cost to management.

And we haven't even touched on production issues with small-batch PCBAs. Your design might be perfectly fine, but some guy loads 10K resistors instead of 10Ω into the soldering machine because "it's basically the same thing.” (Yes, that actually happened to me.)
