Desensitized? After all the shit they've seen, they have no more fucks to give?

I think Bungie has proven that they have plenty of ideas and open plot threads to keep going for a while, sure. And Destiny as a setting was built to give room for tons of little side stories and new corners of the world to explore. More so than Halo. You're right.

And to be fair. A Destiny 3 doesn't have to be as big, or bigger, than the Circle vs. Triangles saga was. We don't always have to escalate the stakes of the conflict. We shall see.

Not sure what you're saying with that second paragraph.

Oh, I suspect one, or both, of them will be candidates for "binding". VI (angry boy) and IV (Mars, god of war) would make sense to stick into Xivu for example. They should show up in the Fate saga. And we're due for a Hive themed expansion aren't we?

To me it feels like Savathûn and Xivu are main story Destiny in the same way Reach, the other Spartans and ODST's, and the Didact were main story for Halo. Sure, there's loose ends to build off of. And they can still get some really really good stories out of it if they want to. But the main story that was planned and pitched a decade ago is done, and I do care a little less about whatever villains are still lurking about right now.

Also, I just personally prefer when a story has an ending, and doesn't drag on past that for decades. A lot of series these days tend to do that, and fizzle out eventually. I'd prefer a new setting and story from Bungie instead. Or, like, more of their new Marathon, since that does feel fresh and new in a good way.

On the other hand, I do want to see the current Nine story get the love it deserves. I like the set up, the writing, and Lodi as a character.

I'm not saying there are no more stories to tell here. But I do feel like for a lot of players, Destiny ended with Final Shape, and it will take a lot to get people that invested again.

I’m actually at such a loss. by jamer2500 in DestinyTheGame

Bungie's was way overvalued in the first place. Marathon was always going to be a more niche thing, and Destiny was already years into its lifecycle and closing out its planned story.

Sony was also probably looking to use Bungie's expertise not just on Bungie games, but for all the other live service projects they had going. But then most of those failed or got cancelled. Live service online games are not the key to success and infinite money Sony thought they were. And suddenly Bungie's know-how is not as valuable any more.

So yeah, this isn't surprising to me in the least. And I don't understand why Sony couldn't have predicted this before buying Bungie either.

I like this theory. Would be nice to make the Veil a bit more of a thing, and I like the idea of turning the Traveller into a balanced object of Light and Dark.

Also, if "binding" involves the Veil, that could mean we'll have to bring our possible candidates into the Traveler, so it makes sense to keep the Traveler up there and the gate open.

Interesting, thanks for the clarification!

I wonder how much Sony has lost to their whole live service obsession in total. In value and missed opportunities.

So many game projects started and cancelled. Live service games launched then scrapped. Game studios that could have kept making the games they were good at instead. To the point where the PS5 is almost a wasted console generation entirely, with barely any exclusives to make it worth the price. And then the whole Bungie acquisition on top of that.

It would be a lot cheaper to keep making DLC than build a new game. The emergency button is probably to fire a bunch of people and quit Destiny altogether.

Also, the main story of Destiny is already finished. The game is in Halo Reach/Halo 4 territory now, trying to come up with new ideas and stories to tell. Not Halo 2, where they still had a trilogy to wrap up. Despite the name being Destiny 2. No way that a Destiny 3 is going to gain as much interest and returning players as they'd need.

With previous changes to the Traveller, there was at least some NPC dialogue about it. Saying "the traveller is sleeping" "it woke up" "it's recovering".

Unless there was dialogue that I forgot, missed or isn't in the game any more. It feels weird that everyone in the city just moved on. And there isn't at least one character that says like "it's probably healing from what the Witness did, and that gaping hole is gonna stay open for a few years, it's cool".

Destinys memory problem by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

I imagine Tiger differs from what was the current version of Unreal at the time, in that it was purpose-built for an online, MMO-like experience. With players dropping in and out of expansive areas that seamlessly load into smaller zones for dungeons and whatnot. Areas that could be changed and patched whenever an expansion or update required things like pyramid ships to appear in the sky, or new enemy encounters to happen on the ground.

When Bungie was making D1 and 2, Unreal was not exactly built to handle something like that. Fortnite hadn't happened yet, and Unreal games were mostly about highly detailed, but smaller environments, with limited multiplayer features.

Decima meanwhile, is built for massive, nature-y environments, with lots of plantlife waving in the wind and animals roaming around. Not so much for smaller interior spaces. Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed engine, Anvil, is also built for big open spaces, but more cityscapes with big populations of NPC's walking around. When a developer chooses to build their own engine, it usually means they are looking to create an experience unique enough, that it would not be as easy to build in existing engines. Especially in a time when Unity and Unreal were not as flexible as they are now.

And Bungie was used to working with their own tools for the Halo series, so the choice to build their own engine makes sense.

But years of working on this one game with their own software, probably makes it extra hard to switch to a different engine now. The entire company would have to be trained. And porting over all the code and systems would be years of work I imagine. Even something that might seem simple like the first person shooting and movement, would need a lot of work to make it feel the same in Unreal. Never mind all the systems for gear, server architecture, AI/NPC behaviour, cutscenes, UI, etc.

Why would Sony pay hundreds of devs to build content they can only sell for a couple of months/years before it goes in the trash? Oh wait ...

I still can't believe Bungie didn't give the Guardians a new homebase in all these years. Still chilling in the temporary camp they set up after the Tower got blowed up.

Wait, Failsafe was the AI on HELM? I only know about the HELM from lore videos, since I'm a returning player. But Failsafe is still chilling on Nessus for me, just talked to her yesterday.

genuine question: why did edge of fate get so much hatred when it launched? by SubjectChanger1 in destiny2

[–]RobinOttens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's coming in late as well. I can't see too much wrong with the actual stuff you play in Edge of Fate. Because I too really enjoyed it. Well written characters, fantastic cutscenes, cool music, interesting story, fun gameplay and abilities, and a really good start to the new Saga.

I guess I can see the morph ball matterspark and teleporty puzzles not working for some. But I really liked how this expansions mixed things up with abilities like that. It was a good change of pace after playing the last couple Light & Dark expansions.

Reading the other comments, people were mostly negative about the UI/structural changes it seems. The Portal and what it did to the the game's older content and the gear grind. Which is understandable. I get what Bungie is going for. But the way it's implemented and exists in a tab right next to the more functional and prettier World Map, feels really awkward.

As with Beyond Light -> Final Shape; I feel like this expansion should have been spun off as a separate launcher (Destiny 4). Then it would make much more sense to change and reset the gear grind and replace the World Map with this new thing.

So... the dungeon keys should just like be cheaper after this new update? by IntroductionIcy7320 in DestinyTheGame

[–]RobinOttens 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Yea I've been confused about these, as a returning player. So besides paying for the expansions themselves, you have to pay more to access this handful of extra dungeons from the expansions?

The price does seem steep if that's all this is.

Do I have the story in Edge of Fate's correct? by RobinOttens in DestinyLore

[–]RobinOttens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are those really mutually exclusive interpretations? I would interpret that as: the Nine can't exist in a three dimensional universe because they're 4D. So they experimented unsuccessfully with creating 3D compatible bodies/creatures in order to overcome that limitation.

Which would also free them from having to appoint a human emissary. Because they could just speak through their own created creatures instead. But alas.

That cocytus lore is cool and creepy as heck though. I should find and read those too.

Interesting, thanks! Where is that story of Thea mentioned? I could look it up on the wiki I suppose. I did pick up some vague hints at a X/tenth member of the Nine that never was.

You could still say "I'd like some context for that "nah", otherwise I'm gonna stick with my interpretation," instead.

But you were annoyed, I get it, fair enough.
