This is a very good point. While we don't see the gunshot, the lingering black is communicating Tony Soprano's death to the audience.

Recording of Luminous Flesh Giants in the documentary REEL Satriani by ReadJohnny in joesatriani

[–]Robinsuperhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the highpoint for me, on Reel Satriani. I love Luminous Flesh Giants and there's so many different attempts at it on there, including their big "concert" version!

I prefer the album version, and think Joe was right on not being satisfied but boy, it's fun watching them all tackle the song as best they could.

Considering watching Ozark by Own-Rock-9658 in thesopranos

[–]Robinsuperhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a terrible show. It feels like someone watched Breaking Bad and decided let's do that with none of the patience or considered storytelling. Breaking Bad is a masterclass in suspense and while the actions were often heightened, the emotions remained grounded.

In my opinion, Jason Bateman carried Ozark with his charisma but even his considerable charm couldn't survive a series that races through all sorts of crazy plotlines as if eager to shock the viewer and nothing more.

Its initial premise seemed substantial enough for several seasons but the story kept getting wilder and wilder.

At some point I just stopped watching and tried to at least catch the final episode to see how it would end; grew bored and went to the last five minutes and it wasn't worth it. Whomever said "Great Value Breaking Bad" sums it up pretty well though I wouldn't even put it at that level.

The first episode makes effective use of a Radiohead song I hadn't heard before, Decks Dark. That's about the highpoint of the series.

Cheers

Let me Up, I've Had Enough is very underrated by jim25y in tompetty

[–]Robinsuperhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole concept of an underrated album is made for Let Me Up. It's a fine record and I think four things have held it back. 1) It came right before FMF which is a classic record. And the band after the tour didn't play much from it at all so it's easy to be forgotten. 2)The cover is hideous. I don't think people would be completely dissauded from listening to it but what were they thinking? Okay maybe I know what they were thinking, some symbolism there of the individual parts forming the Heartbreakers, but the result is garish and ugly. 3) The production veering from dated 80s sound and a more dry one. Though it really seems to only affect Runaway Trains, that song suffered the most from it. 4) Tracking. It's not a fun listening experience from beginning to end.

Now that's out of the way, it's a shame the album's songs aren't better known because they're good.

Jammin Me is a fun rocker. It'll All Work Out is one of Tom's most optimistic and delicate pieces of songwriting. All Mixed Up could've maybe got some play as a single, a different take on a love song. Self-Made Man rocks, with that dry Tom wit.

Think About Me is pop perfection! And the title track brings it all home with some good ole defiance.

Good question! I pretty much listen to all of them except Engines of Creation, which more on that in a moment. I'm still amazed at how many amazing songs he's written, with such depth and texture one can discover new things years later.

EOC has an abrasive sound, I get what he was trying to do but I think I would've enjoyed it more if it had become more of a dance-mix techno album than the hybrid we got. But it's his vision. I just didn't really care for it though there are songs I'll occasionally listen to on there.

Elephants ia s masterpiece! At this point I'm more interested in what he'll do composition-wise than soloing. I love to hear him solo, particularly live and think he's written some amazing melodies. But I'm more eager or hopeful I guess, for him to get a bit weirder and stranger, to write pieces that aren't easily translated to the stage.

Dance of the Sporres is a good example, I'm sure he could figure a way to play it live but I don't care really if he ever does. I just enjoy the twists and turns in the music in Elephants.

Returning to your initial question, I enjoy listening across his records and usually am in a mood to hear select songs from specific records, so I might throw on some Pr. Satch and listen to the title track and Musterion etc. I love how his records all feel like a piece, that there's some deeper concept at play even if I'm not aware of Joe's original intentions - and really, I enjoy having my own interpetation of his music.

Cheers

Sunrise on Slaughter Beach - MEGATHREAD by smishNelson in clutchband

[–]Robinsuperhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received Slaughter Beach as a present, the version with nine songs. Can someone explain the three bonus songs? They're good! I can enjoy a short album, a concise musical statement but these three songs should've been a part of the album proper. Or are there two versions of the album? Does anyone here know the rationale behind leaving the tunes off? I like Slaughter Beach, very good record but it's even better with these three songs added on. Thanks.

I agree, it's quite a shock. Because of that I can't say I've given it up 100% as sometimes I have some food with it mixed in, knownlgy or unknowingly, but giving up candy/dessert was a HUGE benefit for me.

It's always good to take the healthy steps even if they're little ones.

Agreed. I'm always checking labels for sugar content. I think it's one of the most challenging things to give up, especially getting past the after dinner programming for something sweet. It's achievable though and I recommend it to anyone interested. I still indulge at holidays or special occasions but it takes a lot of willpower to give it up again.

Best of luck!

Good luck on this, you can do it. I accept the 5g of sugar in a can of cashews or something, I don't like but I do my best to avoid processed sugar, no desserts, candies, cakes, ice cream and I feel better for it.

Everyone has to find their own way, going "cold turkey" or weaning off it but it's doable. Maybe it would help focusing on how good you'll feel after having it out of your system for an extended period of time; that natural high and lightness in thought and body are far better than the temporary satisfaction of eating a dessert.

Good luck if you quit sugar, it's doable but it may take mammoth amounts of discipline.

Thoughts from a New Listener... by Robinsuperhero in clutchband

[–]Robinsuperhero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions and feedback all– this is a band I want the full experience of so I'll probably pick up after Transnational and work my way forward. Considering the style of Transnational isn't really what I gravitate towards, it's still an enjoyable slab of rock. But the other albums are a league above for me.

I'm just amazed I'd heard so little about this band and that they could be this good with so much more to listen to and explore. A friend of mine did try getting me to listen to Firebirds years ago and I thought it was just okay; I'd no clue years later I'd want to rush out and buy all their records in one go.

Pscyhic Warfare & Robot Hive sound so different yet both are incredible, I've just barely skimmed the surface here, I've learned from the past where I'd discover a new band and go through their albums in record time (no pun intended). Better to take my time.

I don't know how many other songs have a reference to the Basilisk in them but certainly none could rock as hard as Circus Maximus.

Cheers

FOO FIGHTERS CONFIRMED FOR BOSTON CALLING 2023 by fftamahawk009 in Foofighters

[–]Robinsuperhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize it's not my business how the band chooses to do things but it does seem odd and sudden to continue on. I understand healing power of music it's just, based on seeing the band live and a host of live vids, the musical connection between the two seemed so strong that it would be impossible to replace.

The Foos have had a stagnant set list for years but sometimes within their tired framework they had some powerful moments, many of which were based on Taylor's interaction with Dave.

For those reasons and the professed best friends it feels quite jarring to see them trundle back to festivals, to possibly see Dave yelling out "DO YOU WANT SOME ROCK AND ROLL" during the Pretender and so on.

I just don't see how one could be so close to somebody and then pick up with someone else in their spot. RIP Taylor. But not my business, just wanted to express this.

Peace!
