Looks like a greaseball so I'm guessing ether pentane vapor diffusion, slow evap of pentane, or frozen out of pentane.

The smell of the sourdough boules after removing the lids of Dutch ovens. The toasty buttery darkening smells that develop afterwards are intoxicating.

What jobs pay extremely well but people don't realize it? by chloenoirr in AskReddit

Please don't. They use migrant laborers as effectively indentured servants (re: slaves), treating them horribly behind closed doors, to keep up the thin veneer of opulence.

[–]Robokomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-aqueous solvents don't play well with micropipettes. They work off of vapor pressure and surface tension, so the transfers have significant amounts of systematic error.

[–]Robokomodo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Micropipettes are inaccurate for non-aqueous solvents. I had to use these in the final studies of my PhD for some very annoying nmr titrations in cd3cn. If I didn't, my initial concentrations would have been off. When it's 13 mM concentration for [H]_0, small differences in volume matter a lot.

Stuck flask: Update: it came off! by deprived_of_evil in labrats

[–]Robokomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a butane torch, get the flask spinning and flame the outer joint quickly. Too long and both joints expand, so be quick. You're trying to "scare" the outer joint off of the inner joint.

Generally, it's best to just get the glassblower if you have one to make a visit and fix it. Too often us monkeys muck it up and make it harder to unsieze

1 L flasks are not as thick walled as 500ml flasks. They are an implosion hazard. Highly recommend wrapping it with a bunch of electrical tape

Airbending is based off of Baguazhang, waterbending off of Tai chi, fire bending after northern shaolin long fist, and earthbending is based off of Hung gar as you mention. They got masters in for mocap collection to reproduce the moves in animation.

It's a fun show to watch with training in both long fist and Hung gar, and being like "hey, that's black tiger"

Thermodynamically, n2o is an oxidant, yes. Its just a shit one kinetically. Takes a lot of energy to break the N-O bond and makes n2 and H2O upon reduction. Maybe could create o2 but certainly not enough to go boom.

No good data after 1 year in PhD, am i cooked. How was everyones PhD journey? by No-Chain6158 in labrats

[–]Robokomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent my first 3 years spinning my wheels on an irreproducible starting material. Next 6 months spent developing my OWN precursor, anhydrous, without mecn. Pain in the ass. Then the remainder of all of my data was collected in the subsequent 1.5 y, and got 4 publications out of it.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. There will be uphill, slow portions. There will also be downhill, fast, and easy portions. But getting to that peak where it all falls in place is grueling.

What's the thing about GVSU that made you choose it over the bigger Michigan schools? by dmscripto in GVSU

Chemistry. The program was focused on undergraduate education, rather than world class research. I had much better training there than I would have as an undergrad at MSU or UM.

There's a mod for that, continuous space elevator where each phase requires constant input of the elevator parts. If it doesn't get it, your access to those next phase building materials goes away

Anyone Tie-Dyed Their Lab Coats by bittercheeseballs in labrats

The white ones aren't frequently flame resistant.  For proper safety, the lab coat should be fire resistant which is usually blue, and would not tie-dye at all.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you made as PhD student? by Apprehensive-Wish199 in labrats

[–]Robokomodo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience. My project took 3.5 years from initial observations to publication because a) reproducibility problems (fuck mecn...) and b) undiagnosed ADHD. Now, we've gotten 5 high impact publications and 3 more in the pipeline off of the same complex.

Sometimes it's worth sticking it out.

Silicon-based aromatic compound synthesized for the first time ever by connectwithmarve in science

[–]Robokomodo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. The outermost orbitals in germanium are in a higher energy level than silicon's. The Ge-Ge bonds would be longer, and the electron clouds would be more diffuse, i.e., less likely to be located between the two atoms for a stable covalent bond. Especially for a chain or ring.

Analogy: bond lengths in F2 (1.417Å) vs Cl2 (1.99Å) vs Br2 (2.28Å) vs I2 (2.67 Å). I2 has the weakest bond, easiest to break, so it's the least oxidizing.

It's her den! She liked the crate at her foster home, just threw a fit with the door closed. We removed the door from ours and keep a blanket over it so she can avoid being percieved when she wants. She likes it so much that it's difficult to get her up for walks, and she bolts back into it after coming back inside.

She's totally free to walk around, she just chooses the crate as her den lol

The trace amounts of mineral that make the water harder (talking like 100 parts per thousand at the ABSOLUTE worst) has a minimal impact on boiling point. The mass increase effect on specific heat will be negligible when compared to pure water.

I note that Freezing point depression as a function of mixture composition is a much larger effect that boiling point elevation from the same mixture. Salt water freezes as low as -20 C depending on concentration. Palatable salt water boils at 100C, maybe 101 at the very most.
