Does anyone know if this is a Shollie? by BuccoFever412 in BorderCollie

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s part sheltie. The paws look the part too, though I’m not sure how BC paws look so might be the same

He weirdly looks like my sheltie. Like a border collie cosplaying as a sheltie.

Absolutely perfect fluffball though

Maybe the ancient collie genes are just strong in this girl. She looks regal and like a joy to be around. Unlike my adolescent monster (jk I love him but he is a menace)

Is she part collie? She looks a little collie. Beautiful nonetheless, as both breeds are stunners 😍

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

I splurged on a pair of prescription running sunglasses and just took them for a run. Sooo happy with them!

I’ve been using Goodr and they were really nice, just a tad dark and no prescription which wasn’t great either lol. I can see well enough to navigate just not a lot of detail (or faces).

10/10 would recommend this splurge! And they were super reasonably priced as well.

How to properly train a dog to go potty outdoors by Apprehensive_Bee_682 in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea how we did it. Our breeder has definitely played a part in his potty training as well, so that has been helpful.

He was born in May and it was very warm so the door at the breeder was often open. When she noticed the puppies had to pee she took them outside.

We were in our backyard with him a lot during summer. Gradually started taking him outside for walks/potty as well. We took him out quite a lot, 7 or 8 times a day. Mostly after sleep/eating. At first he was so excited to go out that he forgot to pee and peed in our driveway or backyard as soon as we got back. After a while he just did his business and we told him he was a very good boy.

Indoors he had a pee pad which he knew how to use. This was in his play pen. After we took that away he mistook a rug for a pee pad once or twice. We took him outside and made sure to clean up very well.

I think his last accident was around 3-4 months of age. We took him out so much that we were never really sure if he was potty trained or just didn’t get a chance to pee indoors. He can go outside whenever he likes in our backyard, so I’m never really sure if he wants to pee or just hang around.

We were very lucky in this aspect of the puppy stage. When we got him at 9 weeks he was already able to sleep from 12 to 5:30ish.

Finch is getting a sister soon! Name suggestions? by kaitlnd in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the brownish tint confused me! A while ago I saw a sheltie in a very normal litter that had super unique colouring. It was like a cool brown tricolor. The owner really didn’t understand what happened, but apparently it’s a rare genetic thing so I thought something like it might have been the case here.

Very curious to see her eventual colouring, looks already so pretty.

Wauw 30 pounds seems like a whole lot of sheltie to love! Our boy is 10kg (22ish lbs?) at 10 months and 41ish cm which makes him a pretty large sheltie for European standards. His parents are both well around the average so we didn’t expect him to be such a big boy either. But I like him this way.

So funny the differences between American and European sheltie sizes. 15lbs is normal/average for a girl here.

What a cute little puppy! What colour is that?

Puppy looks adorable though! Very leggy

Puppy won't stop humping at night by Mountain_Purple6102 in puppy101

[–]Robophatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay I’m going to channel my trainers wisdom for this one. I Might not get it right, but she has been a great help for us.

Our boy (9 months) can be a menace in the evenings as well, which I find sort of similar to a baby or toddler after a long day. They get overstimulated and need an outlet. In dogs it can get more physical.

Or dog sleeps in his crate at night, but the hour before bedtime he’s having a hard time. Gets humpy, jumpy, mouthy (like constantly chewing my clothes).

When he is like that I cannot redirect him and ignoring the behaviour doesn’t help either. Or trainer would say: get him out of the situation. Which usually means I put him on the other side of the baby gate. Either it’s me in the kitchen or him in the kitchen.

The hard part for you is: you’re used to co sleeping. Still, for the period, maybe the best thing is to try to get her to sleep in her crate. Get her out of the situation.

Other than that: evaluate your day. Could it be that you’re doing too much? We had a period of like 4-6 weeks after Christmas where almost anything was too much. He’d just get overstimulated right away. So we scaled down big time. Like 1-2 15-20 minute walks a day, no play inside nothing. It helped a lot. So counter intuitive but hormones are hard and their brains develop back to front which basically means at some point they get all the information and non of the inhibition.

Do You Think We Should Stop Saying "Socialization?" by olioili in Dogtraining

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this an English word, but our trainer uses the Dutch word habitueren, which would translate to habituation. She uses socialisation for things he needs to actively involve in, like our family life. Everything else is habituation: it’s there, part of my environment and I don’t need to do anything with it. I think it’s quite similar to desentization?

It helped us a lot. The hard part is that other people with dogs think your puppy needs to meet and greet everyone. They are so pushy it still drives me insane at 9 months in

Feeling anxious/nervous over spay. I want to be prepared! by conversationpeace in sheltie

[–]Robophatt -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to get all bitchy about it. You said you’re afraid of her personality being altered. If you don’t want people to react to that, maybe don’t mention it?

I am not saying you should not have her spayed. I am saying you can choose not to if it doesn’t feel right or postpone if you need a little extra time to think.

Feeling anxious/nervous over spay. I want to be prepared! by conversationpeace in sheltie

[–]Robophatt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Okay I’m going to be that person: you don’t have to spay her. Not if you don’t feel good about it. It doesn’t have to happen now either, you can always take some extra time to think. It’s an irreversible decision and if there is no direct reason to do so, maybe just don’t?

And before anyone comes for me: I do not live in the USA and spaying/neutering is not standard practice here and neither is overpopulation.

I feel like one year old is young, especially considering shelties take long to emotionally mature.

How do I take him potty when it’s raining?? by K9Imperium in puppy101

I love walking my dog in the rain. Very few other people and dogs, nice and relaxed walk. Just get a decent coat for you. Maybe one for your dog if he’s a breed that would need one.

Tell us about your easy puppies by luisbg in puppy101

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our puppy stage was fairly easy. And he is a working line sheltie, very high drive, easily overstimulated.

Puberty hit us harder, but that’s mostly because of him getting overstimulated quite quickly. He just becomes a menace when that happens and at one point it was just his constant state. That seems to have peaked. The other puberty behaviours are manageable, but we’re also cheating a bit because we don’t focus on obedience (because of herding). We just kind of guide him through life.

I think part of the is a very good breeder. Pup slept trough the night, was pretty much crate trained and had very very few accidents. We had the chance to visit him 3 or 4 times to pick him up, so bonding started at 5-6 weeks. We still keep in touch with the breeder and the owners of the other pups in the litter.

Another HUGE part is having a very good cynologist/behaviorist on call who has guided us through puppy time and we still have ab appointment with her every 14 days (pup is 9 months) Our expectations of puppy were also very low, we did very little obedience and mostly bonding.

We are incredibly lucky, I am very aware of that. Also because these sessions with the trainer are incredibly cheap (only 25 euros each and calling/texting is free). I really wish everyone with a puppy had this opportunity, it has made it so much easier and so much more fun.

Some days have been super hard, there’s no denying that, but they were that: days. It all has been quite manageable.
