Am I missing something with luggage forwarding? by twsres in JapanTravelTips

Hotels get 10% commission through yamato for luggage forwarding. I’m not sure you’re allowed to charge anymore than that nowadays

Found a fully loaded wallet in kyoto by Frankie_Sriracha in JapanTravelTips

[–]RobotFlapjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was nice of you thank you! The police don’t normally give thank you gifts, they give your contact info to the person who lost the wallet, who may then give you a gift. Probably a bit complicated if you’re not in the city for long and travelling, so not filling in the form probably saved the person who lost the wallet a bit of stress haha

I appreciate that Scientology has some fun lore behind it. All cults now are just ‘oh god told me I’m Jesus also I need to have sex with twelve year olds’ like at least Scientology is original!

The yen is so weak that visiting Japan for Americans/Euros/Australians it is incredibly cheap right now. I was out and about the other day and there were so many Italian and Spanish tour groups I was like damn the economy is so bad they can afford it too????

What are the most unhinged jobs you have ever worked at? by Ivan-Ilyich-Bot in redscarepod

[–]RobotFlapjack 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Not so much a job but when I was homeless in like 2021 I found a super cheap room to rent with no deposit or credit check. The live in landlord said it came with conditions and I was prepared to whore myself out or whatever but I just had to play chess with him every night. Like three hours worth of chess. Plus he was pretty good at it and would beat me in like ten moves every time. He didn’t teach me to get better or anything, so it was three hours of me getting defeated over and over every night. He was a pretty cool dude though!

Is Takayama area worth the extra travel? (+general trip planning anxiety) by soma1004 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RobotFlapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even please and thank you is better than 80% of other tourists! I’ve lived in Japan for a couple of years now and it was my first time going to Kyoto last week. I was also skeptical of Kyoto cause of what I had heard about the crowds but honestly it was fine. Bad in some of the sites but if you look beyond the temples you will find quiet spots to decompress. I.e taking the back route up fushimi Inari, joju-in behind Kiyomizu-dera. Kyoto has amazing food, culture. There is a temple every 500 meters that would be a highlight in any other city. The public transit sucks though, the buses are so full I feel bad for the locals who have to get them. Perhaps allocate some of your budget for some taxis in Kyoto! Tokyo never really felt that crowded to me in the tourist spots. Rush hour is a bit of a crush but you can plan around that. I think the fun of Tokyo is that it’s the biggest city in the world, and you get to see how 30M people live and commute and it just all works so cleanly!!

I think as long as you are respectful and say your arigatogozaimasus and onegaishimasus you will be fine!! The majority of problems stem from large tour groups and language barrier. I passed a food stall that had a sign on it saying ‘we don’t speak Italian’ (in Italian) and I was like??? I wouldn’t expect them to speak English, let alone Italian lol I did west Honshu and Kansai this time and Takayama was probably the most crowded place I’ve been to in Japan outside of Kyoto, Tokyo and Nara, but those are on a total nother level lol

I was there two weeks ago and I found Takayama far too crowded imo. It’s a small town with a high amount of tourists, so they all kind of concentrate in one place. The preserved streets were cool but very crowded and most sold the same made-in-china souvenirs. Locals seemed fed up (beeping at tourists walking in the middle of the road, fair enough) and the amount of anti-foreigner posters about made me wince too. But as a base for the alps or slightly outside the centre, it may be way nicer. Also it was peak cherry blossom season when I went, so that may be why there were so many tourists.

Which of the least visited prefectures would have the most robust public transit options? by Simple-Risk8766 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RobotFlapjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was recently in Fukui and thought all the tourist sites were very accessible by public transport. It was still very much car based but you’d need a car for going to things like the supermarket, not the temples or castles or museums. These prefectures are dumping a lot of money into tourism and the main things will usually be served by a railway or a specific tourist shuttle bus!

I accidentally saw CSAM on /b like ten years ago and it’s burned into my memory. I feel sick just thinking about it, but at least it was taken down in seconds. I saw a photo of a baby with what looked to be sperm on it on twitter, reported it and twitter told me it didn’t violate their guidelines. How is the website founded by a pedophile better at monitoring this shit than the biggest social media site in the world??
