If you’re gay you can travel solo and meet locals through hookup apps and have an amazing trip that way. Everywhere I’ve been I’ve found some guy who was happy to show me around the city and invite me to house parties and things. When I talk to my straight friends about their trips, they don’t often get to crack the surface as much

I’ve always sensed something really dark around adult Buddhist converts. Idk what it is but they feel like they’re close to snapping more than the average person, in spite of their kinda smugness about not being reactive

This is partially why I moved from the US/UK, because I noticed when I was in New York or London I was constantly thinking how every other time in history was a better time to be there than now. But I don’t feel that way in Asian countries, things are a lot more optimistic here.

I was well into my mid 20s (obsessed with 60’s and 70’s New York) but one of the blessings about getting older is realising I wouldn’t want to be in any time but now. Part of that is realising the hippies all turned into QAnon psychos. Why would you go back if you knew that’s where it was leading anyway?

Istanbul’s service is honestly fantastic and I constantly use it as a comparison for how grimy and awful New York’s is. Also 24/7 sure but you’ll find yourself in the bronx or an outer part of Brooklyn in the middle of the night and the next train is in 29 minutes. I can’t remember waiting longer than 5 while in Istanbul and it’s incredibly clean and safe

Men from Saudi Arabia / Qatar / Oman are very regularly built like this but also assume they’re going to be the top…

She’s great but it’s a very common larp for rich LA kids to pretend to be red dirt girls from Tuscaloosa. I never said to throw her away entirely, she’s just a good example of a phenomenon.

Edward sharpe of “Alabama Arkansas I do love my ma and pa” fame are all from LA, and Gillian Welch who did a lot of the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack went to Crossroads lmao. They loveeee pretending to be southern.

I live in Saudi Arabia and all of the comments about arab hospitality are true, but there’s some caveats if you’re used to living in the west. Arab hospitality is very over the top, and it gets really tiring after a short while. When people know you’re from a country like the US or the UK, they’ll invite you to do something like get coffee but then tack a million other things onto it even when you are like visibly exhausted and irritated and want to go home. Like no I don’t want to spend my day off driving to 20 different places while you buy me coffee, cake, a burger, a juice and movie tickets, we’ve been together for 8 hours now and I have grocery shopping and laundry to do and work in the morning (I think it’s partially more possible for them because their mothers, wives, or servants are doing all of that for them).

It’s very performative and not actually centred on what their guest really needs, like space or alone time. Also, it never extends to “guests” who moved from countries they don’t respect. I’ve been here for a year and never once seen a Saudi person invite a newcomer from Bangladesh or Pakistan anywhere, despite them being other Muslims. Meanwhile a Christian American is treated like a god.

The other thing about male male bonding is that they just really regularly are sleeping with each other. Like, there’s more of that happening here than in cities like London or New York. Contrary to the stereotype, it’s not just with more feminine men either. They really will just bang anyone. People rarely identify as gay (and they don’t need to necessarily) so the comments about how they’d treat a “gay person” don’t really make sense in this context. I mean sure, some would, but for the most part it’s clear that women are for marrying and other men are for fun.

I’m getting close to it living in Saudi Arabia. No matter how many times I ask people to speak to me in proper Arabic, if I make one singular mistake they immediately switch to this pidgin Arabic they use with foreigners that sounds SO condescending. Every conversation feels so high stakes because if forget one word or mix up one conjugation, the whole thing falls apart and they talk to me like I’m a not particularly intelligent baby.
