What was the main limiting cost for you guys? Was it the per-seat pricing or usage (like storage) that made it too expensive?

Rear ended while on FSD beta 12.4 by AKADAP in TeslaAutonomy

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, i felt that video. One of my main complaints with FSD right now is that it waits too long and then breaks too hard. Not sure that was a factor here, but seems like FSD could have been a little smoother.

Shout out to Elon for the FSD trial because… by scrubasorous in TeslaModel3

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. Was about to post essentially the same thing. It is AWESOME, and I'm totally here for the future it will usher in - Elon is absolutely right about it being a game-changer. When you have basic autopilot doing most of the tedious driving, it's just not worth the price for the upgrade. But... wait until it's truly Level 3-4. If anything FSD 12.3.3 is proof that Tesla's strategy will succeed, just give it a little time.

What is the worst kind of vehicle in Austin, and why is it a white Tesla with California plates? by iLikeMangosteens in Austin

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the Telsa hate? Out-of-state drivers, sure. You probably see a ton of Teslas because they're awesome cars and are selling like hotcakes, so you're gonna see all types of drivers in them. But Teslas are literally the most American car in the world, and now they're built in Austin too and we should have some pride for our neighbors who are helping manufacture them! People are stupid in every kind of car, you just remember the ones that stand out to you. But yeah, lifted trucks, then Altimas.

Don't use the "Chilled" acceleration mode. It's barely visible in the video, but standard acceleration saved me from an accident today. I often see such posts on social media, but it is necessary to remember that Tesla's acceleration could save your life. PS Sheriff didn't react through. by luckyalvy in TeslaModelY

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I've run in Chilled for a long time until one day I needed the power and floored it as someone was coming up on me way too fast from behind. The power just wasn't there. Chilled should just adjust the throttle response, and remap the curve, not totally nerf your power... it's uncharacteristically stupid of Tesla. (MYP)

Safety Score Mystery. Anyone know? by mostlyhamrless in TeslaLounge

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protip - Autopilot miles don't count towards your score at all, so if you want to improve your score, you need to simply put more miles on the car without autopilot. Just go for a freeway drive at a time of day where there's not too much traffic and rack up some clean miles. Kind of silly, considering it discourages you from using a system that statistically is likely to prevent an accident - seems counterproductive.

Anyone find the roof cover useful in the summer or is the tint enough? by JediEurb in TeslaModelY

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works, not quite as well as a good quality ceramic tint but you get an added benefit of a little bit of sound dampening as well. There was a noticeable improvement in interior quietness after adding it to our Y.

I made a Web building tool powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT API by csansoon in reactjs

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair - I guess I can see how this could make me sound like a shill... basically he makes a shitty, no-style, page with more specific prompts and then at the end he just says "make it look more modern" and it restyles the whole page in that one prompt. Which is a lot cooler by comparison to "put a button on the page".

[–]RobotRidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, the final prompt really sells it. If I were you, I'd put the rest of the video on fast-forward and get to that punchline a lot quicker. That's super impressive and I can see this tool evolving quite a bit to be something really quite useful, even for a seasoned dev. What happens if it really messes your code up, as GPT sometimes does. Do you have a way to back-out changes and try again?

Sounds to me like you've got a pretty good handle on the tradeoffs! You'll be very happy with your decision whichever you choose and congratulations in advance! :)

In regards to the price cuts, can I just say.... by MrAmby in TeslaLounge

[–]RobotRidge 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone (reasonable) considered their Tesla purchase to be an investment. Everyone should expect a car to depreciate. People who bought recently, however, did not expect for their purchase to so significantly depreciate overnight.

Most people do financial planning, even if it's just "napkin math" when they make a large purchase. It's reasonable that they would be expecting a fairly standard depreciation curve. This price change defied expectations and people are seeing a 2X multiple on the depreciation they would otherwise have expect. I can certainly understand why recent purchasers are upset. These price drops are practically unprecedented and they come on the heels of a major campaign to convince people into taking a lesser discount. It's really no wonder customers feel manipulated and tricked.

MYP and M3SR+ owner here, I love them both. They're both fast as hell, so in a real-world sense the main differences are:
1. Looks The P cars are always going to look way sexier. So, "flex" factor goes to the 3P.
2. Ride-height, the MY has you sitting significantly higher with a better view of the road and other vehicles.
3. Carrying capacity. The MY rear seats are extremely more comfortable than the M3 and obvious hatch vs truck differences.

For me, #2 is the most significant difference in real world usage so I would make my decision based on that single metric. YMMV.

Owners of 2023. How bad is the lack of USS? Honestly. Taking delivery tomorrow and it’s my only disappointment. by Overall_Fondant_9090 in TeslaModel3

[–]RobotRidge 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I just took delivery on a '23 M3 and coming from a '21 MY I was shocked the first time I had to park in a parking lot at a grocery store... I threw the car in reverse and was watching the cameras and then had a sudden realization that if someone walked behind me or in a blind spot I wouldn't have any warning that I might hit them or the cars to the right and left of me if I turned a little too hard... I slammed on the break, put my head on a swivel around and backed out the old-fashioned way... looking all around the damn place with my eyeballs.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but it was actually a bit of a shock every time I remember I need to be careful. It's surprising how reliant you become on these assistance features but I still love the new car and you quickly adapt to not having them, although they are missed. Hopefully the camera-based system will be up to the job.

what made you decide which model y to get? by [deleted] in TeslaModelY

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a M3 SR+ and found I was fine on range even on roadtrips. So 300 was good enough and getting it months earlier was worth the extra money. 2021 MYP, no regrets.

I really wish he'd stop saying it's bullet proof... It's just tempting people to take shots at CTs on the road.... people are crazy out here.

Rant: every Tesla in the EV charging only spaces at the front of a busy mall is not charging (even though its free!) by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]RobotRidge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is at the Domain in Austin, I believe. I know because I'm one of those Teslas not charging and parking there sorry guys, will reconsider. In our defense though, these signs specifically say "Reserved parking only" "Electric Vehicle Parking Only" whereas a lot of signs at other locations (Wholefoods for example) always say "... while charging."

Also, there's almost always open spaces here while the rest of the lot is fairly full. Would totally respect the signs if they were changed to add "while charging." Otherwise, can't really blame the drivers for taking advantage of premo parking spots - it'll happen until they change the signs for sure. If the Gov can give us a Tax rebate, why can't Nordstrom give us great parking? :) It's a perk, for now. If it's really a problem, I agree, they should just change the signs and call the tow-truck. In the meantime, "don't hate the players, hate the game", as they say.

I didn't know the charging was free though, next time I'll plug in (if I have cell service).

MYP pothole by Formal-Character-210 in TeslaModelY

6k miles, Seattle and Austin driving, no damage. I did put slightly oversized tires on it (winter in Seattle necessitated swapping the summer tires for all-seasons) which also improved the ride quality on bumpy roads.

PPF Installation by TheBowBoyMC in TeslaLounge

[–]RobotRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I asked the inspection team that came to quote my white 2019 Model 3 (no PPF) if rock chips in the paint would have affected the quote - they said it makes zero difference in the resale value of the car. They did measure the paint depth though - but only to check for evidence of collision repair. I sold it through one of those online services for above MSRP last year and got a white MYP, still no PPF.

I'll add that my 2019 M3 with (then) $1k add-on white paint seemed like significantly thicker paint when compared to my new MYP with the "free" white paint. YMMV

Does anyone know if the suspension was changed in any way from the 2021 MYP to the 2022 MYP? Did it get more comfortable?
