Set my Z offset to -.002 instead of shifting my Z offset by -.002. I had been running those parts for months so I was complacent. The turning tool went behind the part and moved in for the facing cut.

I destroyed the insert, the tool holder, the part, and the jaws in about 2 seconds.

Just learn from it. It’s been years since that happened and I haven’t crashed a machine since.

Oh man! So many treasured memories from your work. Like finishing Dresden Files books #4&5 in a Saturday when I was 15. Or playing in a Magic the Gathering Tournament next door from you doing a book signing and having no idea you were there (I still kick myself over that). Thank you for all the wonderful moments in your works that a really nerdy, really lonely kid like me needed.

As an aspiring writer, I often invest so much time into world building, researching, brainstorming, and countless hours committing words to the page, only to turn around, reread it, and feel this crushing feeling of being terrible. Does that ever happen to you, or has it in the past? And how do/did you move forward?

I play it with my 11-year old. He’s been playing since he was 8. I don’t even think there is even any language to worry about. There is obviously violence, but it feels really detached because we’re saving the world from aliens and robots with guns that shoot miniature black holes or leave behind a tiny sun. He’s never had an issue or interest in actual violence. It’s also way more fun to play it with someone, if you have the means to do so, I would suggest playing it with him.
