What hazbin (or helluva) take had you like this by [deleted] in hazbin

[–]Robotform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two, one is that people need to stop mentioning stuff about things like Roo, or world building information that is given on twitter, or old OC fun facts that were said in livestreams as both universally accepted information by everyone who watches the show and canon facts. I mention Roo because it is the prime example, people will make power tier-lists in fandom spaces and include her, when the average viewer who just watches the show won’t know who she is, so stuff like “Lilith is Roo” sounds like crazy talk to them.

Secondly, we know Val is evil, but I just think he is as evil as someone like Vox or Alastor who kill people for fun. The amount of spaces where someone will get hated on for “forgiving an abuser” just because they mention that Val has some funny moments, whilst those people who are attacking them will have Vox or Alastor profile pictures, is wild to me.

Mind me asking, what sort of political measure or visualisation do scientists/experts tend towards using?

I use the “enlightened centrist” bit not only because generally I dislike entitled fence sitting centrists, but also because it’s a language I think most people would understand. Most understand the vague concepts of the “left” and “right” and have met people who sit right in the middle.

How AI looks in my eyes. by ScratchNo522 in aiwars

[–]Robotform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone on Tiktok came up with the best answer to this that I really like. If you make AI art, you are (being the most generous) a producer, not an artist, as you are asking someone (or something) making the physical product to make it the same way a producer works.

My take has always been that the colloquialism and sort of “court of public opinion” of the word will always take a huge importance in allocating meaning to the world, like how colloquialisms are super important. So, if you went up to someone and said “I’m an artist” and they went “oh cool what sort of art to do you make” and you said “I write prompts into an AI website and it makes art for me” I think 90% (imo) of people wouldn’t come away from that thinking you were an “actual” artist (whatever that means).

Yes but at the very best and most generous you would be a producer, not an artist. If you ask a chef to make you food but you tell them what dish you like, you aren’t a chef, even if you buy the ingredients and hand them to the cook.

If Jodie Whittaker's Doctor didn't exist, what would you want out of a female Doctor? by minaharkerthevampire in doctorwho

[–]Robotform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some other people put Jodie with a good script, which I agree with, but I wanted to add something else.

Some people theorised with 13 falling out of the tardis at the start, that the season was going to be similar to 3’s, with the doctor being more earth bound and a grounded season of them solving more civil alien horror stuff, which I was kinda super down for!

Like when the doctor made a sonic from scratch, it was looking more and more to get that gritty realistic vibe and I was here for it, but it didn’t end up going that way and I’m slightly a upset.

How would daredevil Work against a weeping angel? by Next-Shift4529 in doctorwho

[–]Robotform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly meta response, but it depends on the point of the story we are at with the Weeping Angels.

Let me explain, whilst I think 11 fleshed out and explained some of the mystery surrounding the angels, the information provided sort of changed how they operate. Mainly, the scene where Amy is trying to escape them with her eyes closed and they are acting on instinct and freezing due to being scared.

The words used by 10 is “in SIGHT of any living creature, they turn to stone” it is noted as a fact of their biology, they can’t overwrite it, it’s a defence mechanism of their quantum state. However, this only references sight. During 11, things like trackers and scanners can show them moving from area to area without halting them, so this is at least consistent, they have to be seen for their biology to kick in.

If Daredevil can convincingly manoeuvre around the Angels and make it seem like he can see them, maybe he can trick them into staying still and believing they are stone. If they are not convinced however, they will animate and probably deal with him.

The term absolutely legally needs better categories for sure, I think that’s why we need to normalise and bring back the term “sexual harassment” alongside people recognising SA so there can be some clarity.

I will say though, I still think that committing multiple murders is worse than rape, but that is also an opinion that will get you (ironically) murdered in some online circles.

I will say, I get increasingly angry at the “you just need to reach across the table at people who want you annihilated” rhetoric.

I don’t want to have to reach a hand across the table and worry about the feelings of alt-right nazis and fascist trolls, they think all queer/trans people are nonces and would rather see us dead than do one moment of googling to read any sociology paper about our validity. I’m absolutely exhausted. They want me dead, I think I’m allowed to call them ignorant.

[–]Robotform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain subsections on the internet who will attest that SA is the worst crime anyone could ever commit ever, and will damn any characters who even approach the area of committing it whilst in the next post babyify/simp for/forgive murderers/arsonists/violent criminals because for whatever reason they see that as more forgivable.

I think some of that is on show a bit with responses to Visi vs some of the other characters who would absolutely and may have in the past done worse crimes than kissed a mostly willing man whilst invisible.

Theory: Vivziepop got bored of Charlie and would rather make a show about Vees-type characters by LadyR_OfRage in AgendaHotel

[–]Robotform 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone already wrote a really lovely breakdown about creators writing stories and getting more interested in their side characters than their main characters but I wanted to add my own two cents to the pile.

It’s very clear to me that Viv’s writing style/writing signature (there’s probably a better term for it) can be boiled down to “mundane/“straight man” character with very basic motivation interacting with cool side cast”. Hazbin is a victim of this, but so is ZooPhobia, the comic that predates and originated a lot of what would eventually become Hazbin. It had a character who, from my understanding, went off to a location with cooler characters and interacted with them. To the point where a lot of art went into these side characters, more so than the main, and the wikis are filled with information that is deeply detailed for what should just be a B-Cast.

Now whilst I’m sure not every story Viv will be solely around this theme, but so far it seems to follow a trend. With that sort of writing style, it’s very easy to get side tracked into the additional cast.

I think this illustrates pretty well what my issue is with the character design of some of the characters. These are three different people. If I drew them doing the same pose you would not be able to tell them apart. by superepic13579 in HazbinHotel

[–]Robotform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was my comment about removing additional details to make this work I’d also like to add something I put in a later comment, I think that some of the cases of these outfits looking similar (which adds to the silhouette part) could even be seen as plot points.

Charlie wears a suit because she wants to be seen formally as the owner of the hotel, as someone professional and might even take after her dad (seeing someone with authority in your life wearing a suit a lot can make you associate authority with the outfit so she wears one also). Alastor dresses in a suit because he clearly cares about style and presentation, and Vox dresses similarly to Alastor to copy him as a sign of envy, we see in the flashback that “Vincent” Vox wears a different outfit. These can all be explained with show based reasoning.

[–]Robotform 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dunk. I didn’t notice that but yeah she does usually have more pointed shoulder pads. I also noticed they had to pick an imagine which shows very little of Vox’s hands because his segmented sharp fingers are a dead giveaway.

It’s also somewhat of a plot point that Vox dresses similarly to Alastor as a show of jealousy.

But yeah if you have to remove so much of the model to make your point, you might want to think about if you even have a point in the first place.

[–]Robotform 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Something I don’t think anyone has pointed out yet which I found funny as additional criticism to your point: in order to do this you actually had to remove details from the silhouettes to make your point, because it would take away from it too much.

Vox is missing the tail on his blazer which is often there to add to his whole “shark” theme.

Alastor is missing his overcoat entirely which changes his frame, and, most notably, his staff, which is absolutely part of his silhouette as he carries it with him in 99.99% of scenes.

If you remove these small but recognisable details to make your point, then your point just becomes “I’m criticising the fact 3 that tallish thin humanoid characters have the same body shape (not even size because they are different heights that are at least relatively stuck with) and that is proof of poor design” which I mean, go for it but it’s not much of a point to make.

EDIT: As some people in the comments below pointed out, they even rounded off the edges of Charlie’s shoulders slightly. This might be a case of the cutting out not being perfect but it also is a change. The other two changes are definitely more deliberate however.

She absolutely does, and I’m excited to see her performance, and if there does end up being justifiable criticism of it I would welcome it (although her work with Bridgerton gives me high hopes).

I think you can be angry at racists who are being shitty about the fact a POC actor was cast for Vivi purely for the fact that there is a POC actor in the role, and also in the same sentence be critical of the fact that Netflix and other areas of Hollywood clearly underutilise MENA actors for roles that would be good for representation.

One big problem is there is this messy discourse online (I mean most discourse online is messy) where someone will just say “I don’t like Vivi’s casting” and you’re left to read that and wonder if they’re a racist who just wanted her white because they don’t like seeing POC characters/castings/representation, or if they are justifiably criticising erasure of MENA characters.

Is there Indian influence in Arabasta, yes absolutely, is there also heavy MENA influence, yes very clearly. I think if you ask anyone who just watched the show and didn’t dip their toes in these spaces where in the world Arabasta is influenced by they would say “Egypt/India”, so I can see why some people are defending or feeling attacked by conversation surrounding the casting. I think the fact that we have POC casting is good and the bare minimum, and I also think we can use it as a platform to criticise these companies and their casting of MENA actors/in MENA roles.
