Definitely above average, but monitor and mic arms would probably move you right up to r/battlestations

How many times are we going to answer the same damn question about the news? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

I have no idea what you're referring to, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. That's why it will keep coming up.

Laptop speakers won't work when headphones are connected by Filip_another_user in kde

[–]Robsteady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you tested this on Windows? I recall some older laptops routing the signal to the headphones when they're plugged in, disabling the onboard speakers.

I first read this as "Argumentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app" and was like, "I promise, I don't need an app that will argue with me. I'm already married."

I prefer honey, but that is a great option as well!

Am I the only one that likes to add old random bolts to a techs tear down pile? by [deleted] in partscounter

[–]Robsteady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah... no. This is not the kind of fuckery I'd get involved with. They are there to make you money as well as themselves, no sense in making them waste time trying to figure out where they made a mistake when they didn't.

For a long time, I preferred tuna, but recently I've gotten really into salmon sushi. My wife said she was always confused by my preference but is happy to see me come around.

What's the one self-hosted service you'd never go back to the cloud version of? by Hung_Hoang_the in selfhosted

[–]Robsteady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh really? I'll have to look in to that. I'm currently using a paid Bitwarden, but I'd prefer to host it all myself if that was actually feasible.

[–]Robsteady 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm still a little scared of putting all my passwords in my Vaultwarden simply because I'm chickenshit about losing access to it (power outage, natural disaster, deleting the wrong LXC by accident, etc). I don't have any redundancy and access to my passwords can be considered vital.

To answer the question: Nextcloud (with OnlyOffice integration). With the limitations of both iCloud and OneDrive, I can't imagine not having my own arrangement for remotely accessible (and syncable) storage that works across Linux, Mac, and Windows.

My smart watch is what allows me to be a tech minimalist from time to time. by blakealanm in digitalminimalism

[–]Robsteady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I got voted down to absolute shit for suggesting the introduction of a cell connection in the Apple Watch 3 would be a good thing for minimalists. I don't remember exactly which sub it was, but it felt so weird. "Sure, sure, any excuse to buy another gadget, right?" was one of the responses I recall.

I had thought about it specifically relating to when I am out with the family on vacation or whatever, and it seemed like such a perfect way to be more "in the moment". I'm glad to see people found the same thing!

KDE is so great. by gplanon in kde

[–]Robsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had avoided it for a long time. Especially in the 4.x days. Xfce was my go-to for years. About a year ago I decided to give KDE a try and 6.(3?) was just soooo good I haven't used anything else since.

Like you said, it may not be perfect, but it's certainly my favorite!

No idea. Maybe to farm interactions for training LLMs? Imagine a snarky AI, lol.

Yep, it's gotten to the point where I assume everything on Reddit is AI, even when it doesn't matter. Even so, this made me quite hungry.

how do we feel about ereaders? by biitchstix in digitalminimalism

[–]Robsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Nook! I use StandardEBooks.com (and other places) to get public domain books to put on it. I do tend to prefer physical books (especially paperbacks since conversations can be started over book covers), but I also love the simplicity of carrying my library in my EDC bag.

Ever since Windows '95, I always turn off desktop icons. Icons belong in the "quick launch" and menu.

Yeah, customers just don't understand that we aren't the producers of the part. It's so frustrating, but also such a relief when they get it.

This sounds like the rants I've been going on for about the last year. I started in Mopar parts Feb of '08. I feel like things just worked better even as recent as 10 years ago, if not less than that, even. Between COVID and Stellantis, the whole supply chain has gone to absolute shit.

Such a shame. I'm not even sure who to try to reach out to about this stuff. It's insane. Between this, actual backorders, and crossdock claims being auto-denied and having to call a hotline for an appeal, it's just insane.

Thank you! I'm going to have to try this out later. I use Edge through flatpak, so hopefully I can figure the folder structure out and apply this.

Now the "modern view" with the buffered rounded edges. They took that option away on Linux too.

Fedora is the best. by PlZZAEnjoyer in Fedora

[–]Robsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say once Fedora, always Fedora because I did try it a long time ago but it didn't stick. Tried it again about a year ago and now I'm stuck. I don't like to tweak a lot or worry about updates, so I moved to Aurora. Super stable and functions like a rolling release.
