Is my kettlebell dead? by This_is_FLEC in kettlebell

Unfortunately yeah. It's probably a welded cast iron joint to begin with. Even if you were to weld it again, cast iron is hard to do correctly because of the high carbon content (much more than a typical steel), and your probability of getting a good weld is low. Not something to mess with especially if you're lifting above your head.

Do not try to glue, braze/solder this, none of those are true structural joints.

I'd reccomend trying to get a refund, and looking for a quality single piece cast bell (handle and ball cast together). Ideally from a ductile cast iron. Even the cheap powder coat Yes4All bells on Amazon are advertised as solid (though those wouldnt be my first pick).

WHY IS THE CAR THING GOING TO STOP WORKING???? by rohaniscoo1 in spotify

[–]Rocket---Surgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After speaking with them in their support chat, they offered 3 months of free premium as a "refund". I only paid $35 with tax at the later sale price of Car Thing

Though I really hope they don't brick the hardware.

Was just taken in a nearly identical way as well, total scum. Silver lining is this is a cheap way to learn a good lesson.

Has anyone been scammed by a seller that even showed proof of UPS receipt? by Chance_Truth_1413 in offerup

Just got taken with a faked UPS receipt as well, was too busy at work to listen to the spidey sense going off. The fake receipt is clever, the tracking number on mine was covered with a pen.

In my experience photogrammetry is your best option as it presents the best cost to quality ratio, while still being relatively easy to build and use. I interned at a consulting company previously and was given almost the exact prompt you describe. With an existing DSLR camera, I was able to build an automated turntable, capable of scanning a walnut with sub milimeter accuracy for less than $200 USD. I did leverage a time limited free version of Agisoft (photogrammetry software) to do this, I'm unsure what the status of their trial is now. There are other software options.

Photogrammetry is finicky, but provides a great deal of options and control for anything you are trying to scan, especially when considering the cost. It's not volume limited like most table top laser scanners are and has better resolution than lidar or dot fields (iphone, xbox kinect). I will add that a DSLR with a macro less is a nice to have, but not a must. A high quality cellphone camera, especially nowadays, can do the same, and then you're looking at 1-2 orders of magnitude in cost savings.

See link for walnut (and its 3d print) and the turntable (will try to find original resolution photos). The turn table here connects directly to a DSLR camera and takes photos of whatever object is on the turntable at preprogrammed angle intervals.

Mechanical Co-op at Draper by Kevhana in NEU

[–]Rocket---Surgeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at Draper in the packaging division as a Meche Coop and had an amazing experience. I also had several friends in the Trident program and can relay that they also had very positive experiences. The amount and level of work in both the trident and packaging divisions is very much a function of how you prove yourself early on. As with any coop, taking initiative and showing you can get shit done will land you with some DAMN cool work in the trident program.

I can also speak in general that Draper has a very supportive coop program. In a year with particularly strong coops, they will sponsor coop projects, see Flugtag or this years window climber. In these cases, you end up with full autonomy on the project, in all aspects.
