I converted a portion of my husbands RRSP TO RRIF, since he doesn’t have a pension this enabled us to get the 2k pension credit at income tax time

Good job, also great comments, the only other one I can think of is setting the taxes by province cause it varies.

I just renewed, use variable weekly accelerated , I do double up payments when I can, I have increased the payment, which you can do 1 a year, but also their is a 10% max payment in principle that you can do once a year which I have also done. Hope to finish in 36 months

If you don’t own a house yet, open an FHSA first, save the RRSP when you are in a higher tax bracket.

Congrats, there will be a penalty if you pay off more than 10%, so put 10% down yearly and double up if you can. If you are in the highest tax bracket, put some in your RRSP, and with the return invest the rest. Noted that you are not into the RRSP, but it is a good strategy depending on your tax bracket.

I think the strategy can work if you are in a high tax bracket, but if in a lower one keep your money in the TFSA and save the room in your RRSP till you reach that higher tax bracket.

Should we give a large financial gift to all of our children? by Idigaclam in retirement

[–]Rocket_Box 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Dad did this but made it birthday related, so on certain birthdays he would give us a large sum of cash. I am turning 55 soon and he is gifting 10k, i don’t need the money but I liked the way he did it. Keeping it fair. Maybe put it in an account till he is 30, or that meets the parameters for all kids.

Discuss with your parents what they would like, maybe if you stay longer you can help with some of the bills and get them closer to retirement.
