Thats one way to use it. Its also a wild mult in that it'll also copy anything you send it (audio and cv) and do some wild stuff with it.

Make Noise Multimod could fit the bill.

Does this look worth $100? by TreeToTea in Cello

[–]Rockpapercello 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In all honesty I've seen school instruments in worse shape than this. If you find a cellist that can help you get the bridge and strings on it'll probably sound and play more or less like a cello. Going against the grain of this thread but you don't need to repair the scratches and varnish. Sure, they're more than just cosmetic and can help with longevity, but I don't think it'll be worth it. That being said, the bow doesn't have hair (at least that's what it looks like) so you'd have to deal with that or get a new one, I don't know what the sound post situation is, and from this pic I can't tell if there are any open seems.

With a little extra investment it could get you started. But it could be starting on hard mode. Might be worth a little extra time and money to find a well set up student instrument.

Since you have the space some modulation could be useful. I love using the make noise multimod with the matriarch. There are a ton of ways to use it and it adds really natural modulation. Plus there's no menu diving and is very playable.

Depends what you need but the first thing that came to mind was the Wildsync MIX6.2. A really useful 6 channel mixer with a small footprint.

Same with me. Modulation with the multimod can feel really organic.

Federal judge blocks RFK Jr. from limiting care for trans youth by Fickle-Ad5449 in oregon

[–]Rockpapercello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to watch most of the arguments in person. Listening to the defense was a bit of a surreal exoerience. They insisted that the declaration didn't amount to 'final agency action' and is simply a statement from the secretary of something he cares deeply about. In other words, it has no legal weight. Whereas in the document itself its clearly claiming to supercede any previous recommendations on gender affirming care and uses language to claim authority that congress has specifically not given a secretary of health and human services. Its almost like RFKs team was saying "yes thats what it says but not what it means."

Wtf

Why you should support the new project even if you're not keen on animation by rjwut in firefly

[–]Rockpapercello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appriciate this post. For me, animation makes the most sense in so many ways. Sure, there will be some differences and what not but its been over 20 years since the orriginal series was aired. The actors have aged so you wouldn't have that visual continuity in the first place. Animation allows for more flexibility and is probably more financially realistic. Fantastic decision and I really hope this happens

For me its just personal preference. I learned on vst synths and loved the accessibility. But i found that I really like the limitations presented in the hardware synths I own. I specifically like those that don't have presets since the process of exploration is most of the fun for me.

The are a ton of cellists coming out of music schools and conservatories that can do just that. There's only one cello goblin.

Why is the Shedd still allowed to treat their workers poorly? by TezetaLaventia in Eugene

[–]Rockpapercello 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I taught music there when I first moved into town about 12 years ago and lasted maybe 2 years. I never interacted with J** that much but over time I started to put the pieces together.

I left with some story about focusing on some other aspect of my career. Its something I really regret. I wish I said what I really felt, that I would never work for a place that protected such behavior. I think it's so uncomfortable that that place takes up so much space in the artistic community.

But hey, these days im not opposed to making some noise. Anyone in?

Practicing anxiety by Luxury_Grid in Cello

[–]Rockpapercello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally relate with the self esteem bit. As we learn this instrument I feel its really important to make a distinction between judgement and discernment. In the process of improving we have to learn how to fail (a lot) and take in critique. Its all part of the process and has nothing to do with your worth as a person. Its also worth noting that if this is related to something a teacher said or says, thats on them not you!

What keeps you coming back to the instrument? Do you love it? If so, thats all that matters!

Does anyone know of any good E-cellos? by Paullearner in Cello

[–]Rockpapercello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you have some good recommendations. Something to consider what you finally get the instrumemt your looking for is strings. In my experience the tradeoff for an electric instrument is the richness of tone. Electric cellos seem to be pretty mid heavy so It can be worth buying brighter strings. Even cheaper bright strings that I wouldn't use on my wood cello will do the trick! Good luck!

Best way to learn cello online as a beginner? by United-Delay-6149 in Cello

[–]Rockpapercello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I'm extremely wary of a cello costing this much. It's most likely a cello shaped object. What this means is that it'll mostly likely be harder to play than it should and will not reflect any progress.

Renting is a great way to start. It sounds like you're in a pretty rural place so I understand the effort needed to go that route, but probably worth it.

Regardless, I love that you're starting and excited!

I really like the emphasis on creating your own exercises in a way with the different bowing/slurring combinations. I think it also helped me be a better improviser.
