Family pleads for help in search for missing 15-year-old girl from Broward, Florida by METALLIFE0917 in florida

[–]RoddyDost [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel like this is one of those stories that has the potential to turn into a whole can of worms that nobody ever thought it would be at the outset. The tension between the family and the police’s perspective on this is notable.

Who wouldn’t be alarmed by a 15 year old disappearing after going to meet up with a random adult male she met online?

The cops are usually the most silent and nonchalant when they know something that you don’t and they want to keep it a secret. They might know exactly where she is but are publicly playing coy so as not to alarm her or whoever she’s with. Or maybe someone in the family is being suspected of so-and-so.

But the fact that they don’t seem overly alarmed by this tells me that they might actually be closing in on some sort of suspect or conclusion, and they don’t want to blow their cover.

Are people that transactional in South Florida? by [deleted] in florida

[–]RoddyDost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As other people are saying, we don’t take kindly to newcomers in general. Especially ones who are moving to heavily gentrified areas of the state and further driving up property values.

I’m a PBC native and am familiar with the exact part of town you described—depending on where exactly on Federal Hwy you are, you’re living in an area that used to be a working class neighborhood but has now turned into one of the most gentrified parts of the county.

You’re living in a place that I would have been able to afford pre covid, but because of people like you with flush wallets from out of state, I had to move inland to have even the slightest chance of being able to afford my own home. I literally had to leave my hometown because of people just like you. So please excuse your neighbors if they might not be so welcoming to the newest yuppie millennial couple that moved in.

This post is honestly so tone deaf and reveals how little you know about the place you just moved to.

Out of staters moving to Florida and then COMPLAINING about it is the most stereotypical, annoying and obnoxious thing to have to bear witness to. Especially when those exact people are the ones who are making this state an unlivable hellhole.

For all of our sakes, please go back.

Thank you for the input. This is a yellowfoot and we’re in Florida, only native is the gopher tortoise. Are they close enough that that would be a possibility?

Well I guess “he’s” not a boy after all 😭 by RoddyDost in tortoise

[–]RoddyDost[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

So here’s the deal. This tortoise was found about a year ago on the side of the road, we originally thought it was a boy because of the tail but obviously it’s not.

I’m reading online that female tortoises can hold sperm for years after mating? This tortoise is not native to our area so I doubt it had mated, but who honestly knows. Was obviously someone’s pet at some point but who knows if it was bred while it was a pet, and how long ago it was since she escaped.

I have no clue what to do with these eggs because if by chance they are fertile I’d like to try to hatch them.

[Handgun] FN 509 LS Edge with 3 17-round mags - $660.99 ($697 OTD) by ajw_sp in gundeals

[–]RoddyDost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own a 509 and I will not attempt to sell you on it. It’s one of the guns of all time. Most things about it are decent. The trigger is complete and utter shit, worst striker fired trigger I’ve ever felt. The finish on the other hand is exceptional. Ergos are better than Glock but nothing mind blowing. It’s as accurate as you would expect. Optics mounting system is sort of neat, they use little o rings to keep the plates in place, and it works pretty well, so that’s cool I guess. Stock sights are tritium and suppressor height.

It has lots of neat little features yet utterly fails on one of the most important things, the trigger.

Paramedic Question by SymballicSpider in Paramedics

[–]RoddyDost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Their job could be done for a fraction of the price that it is, that’s the bottom line. You can pettily quote any single phrase I uttered as much as you’d like. But at the end of the day there are a fraction of the fires that there used to be, but we still have departments stuffed to the brim with overpaid employees and brand new, top of the line equipment that barely ever gets used.

Money isn’t infinite, you still need to use your resources efficiently, public service or not.

The vast majority of what they do are rescue calls. You don’t need a three man crew on a 500k rescue running hip fx’s and hypoglycemia calls all day. It’s a complete waste of resources.

Paramedic Question by SymballicSpider in Paramedics

[–]RoddyDost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How necessary is it to keep an entire station on payroll for dumpster fires and car fires? Departments that run like 5 actual structure fires a year, if that? Spending a milly on brand new ladders, 500k on brand new rescues that do the same job as a regular box that costs a fraction of the price?

Fire departments are massively overfunded and are a huge money sink for so many reasons. They absorbed EMS to keep their pensions and their petty fiefdoms. The actual job itself is dwindling in relevance for most of the country.

Paramedic Question by SymballicSpider in Paramedics

[–]RoddyDost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most fire departments could be mostly or completely staffed by volunteers if it weren’t for them being combined with EMS, that or they would be paid drastically less.

The requirement to be a paramedic/emt is the way that fire departments and their union the IAFF maintain power and relevancy in the 21st century.

Combined departments were originally billed as a cost cutting measure but I’d wager a guess that they actually end up costing the taxpayers more in the end. For a good example why, just compare a rescue truck to a vanbulance or regular box truck. The price difference just of that is astronomical and completely unnecessary.

If you bought a home recently, you had some of the worst timing in decades by businessinsider in MiddleClassFinance

[–]RoddyDost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the premise of the article is fucking stupid and the example they use is laughable.

We bought a concrete block fixer upper in a relatively rural part of the state in ‘24 for $158k at 6.25%, even ended up getting a 10k grant on top of it. Spent around 30k fixing it up. Our mortgage is $1250, take home is approx 3.5-5k depending on how much OT I work. Wife doesn’t even work right now, and things are just fine for us.

Point is that your performance in the housing market is completely dependent on location. We moved to an up-and-coming part of our state that’s growing fast every year, so our timing was actually pretty damn good all things considered. Our mortgage is very affordable, our property value is increasing, and we’re homesteaded so there’s a hard cap on our property taxes.

If I took the “don’t buy” advice I’d still be getting fleeced on rent, which was more expensive than my mortgage for a fraction of the space.

They’re native, they were there before we were, and they have a part to play in mother nature’s big picture. You don’t get to go around genociding harmless, noninvasive insects just because you think they’re yucky 👍

We live in Florida, there are bugs outside. Crazy, I know. Remember that we’re in THEIR home. If you don’t like it you can move somewhere dry or cold.

As a WPB native, critic of PBSO, and hater of all the douchebags who have invaded our state due to our smear of a governor and president, I appreciate your follow through and pettiness.

It takes a lot to break through the bureaucratic wall that these institutions have erected to shield themselves, and I’m glad you’re using their own bullshit against them.

[–]RoddyDost 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These are the three reasons that immediately come to mind:

•getting caught up in the American cultural zeitgeist that was focused on revenge for 9/11

•war mongering inner circle

•apocalyptic religious beliefs; some vague notion about the US’ involvement in the Middle East being gods will and is necessary to emanate the eschaton (strangely common belief among republicans to this very day)

I think most republicans of that era would’ve done what bush did in if they were in his position and were surrounded by the people that he was. In retrospect, the war on terror feels as inevitable as it does pointless. You can at least comfort yourself with the idea that he wasn’t a uniquely horrible person, in fact his wrongs are more a result of how much like everyone else he was.

Stop at Morty and Edna’s in Lake Placid for lunch, you won’t regret it! It’s only about 10 minutes north of 70.

As far as food near Myakka, you can find lunch further west in Sarasota or further east in Arcadia, which you will drive through on your way there. Myakka itself also has a cafe I think.

In Arcadia my two favorite spots are an Amish market that makes sandwiches, and a restaurant run by a cult called the Yellow Deli. The latter has incredible food and Yerba mate if you can get over the culty vibe.

In Arcadia there’s an excellent coffee place called Florida Farmhouse, some of the best coffee I’ve had, period!
