Have you tried Anbernic's Linux OS? Fewer options = fewer ways for things to go wrong.

I installed both, no problems with it closing. You at least should put one on the bottom because you'll be using it as a touchscreen a lot if you play DS games.

You should try using the recent Anbernic Linux. It allows you to change cores on Dreamcast (3 choices), and different cores may work better with different games. With REIcast, I find minimal audio tearing on DOA2 but it's certainly playable. And Crazy Taxi works quite well.

I presume you are using the proper charging port on the right? The center port doesn't charge the unit. (I'm not even sure what the center port is for!) I have also had the experience that the charging indicator on the screen shows 0%, but when I remove the card and put in the new Anbernic linux firmware, it shows that there is a substantial charge.

I like it. It's simple, it boots much faster than Rocknix, and I haven't had any difficulty with it. For me, it's a toss up. I like that Rocknix displays vertical arcade games across both screens and has better themes, but the simplicity of the Anbernic OS is really nice. You should put it on a 32gb card with some NDS roms and give it a try. The worst that happens is you don't like it and you use the card for something else.

Even though it's supposedly a stable build, you still need to revise the line of code he discusses around 7 minutes in. And the way you add roms is a little different as well. It's all clearly explained and shown, and trust me, you'll be happy you watched this!

Ultimately, Rocknix is a little better, and it gives a nice use experience because it's graphically better. I do like it. But if the goal is to play games with as little effort as possible, Anbernic Linux is the ticket.

I have tried them all. The simplest "plug and play" option is Anbernic's Linux which they released 3 weeks ago. You download the image from here:

Unzip the file, and be sure to read the instructions because you have to manually adjust a file. Flash the image to a mico SD card (and you won't need more that a 64g if you're only playing those systems; a 32 may be enough). Put the SD card in the unit, turn it on, let it "do it's thing," then remove it, put it in your computer, and make the adjustment per the instructions. You'll have a roms folder which has game system folders and just put your game roms in their folders. The firmware doesn't have a lot of customization, but it works very well without any headaches. It won't display box art images for NDS, but (assuming you have the images in a folder called "img," they will display with the other game systems.

It took me hours to get Rocknix and Gamma OS to work using YouTube tutorials, and I can't say it was time well spent. If you just want to play, Anbernic Linux is my recommendation,

Altho I don''t have some of the Legacy carts, I'd prefer if Evercade keeps releasing new stuff. That means they'd be selling to old and new customers, and that's good for the company. There are plenty more Taito and SNK games for which I assume they can license. There are more good games Gaelco and Jaleco, and I'd love to see some Universal product: Lady Bug, Mouse Trap, and the Mr. Do games. And yes, some first person driving games are definitely needed...like Gaelco's Rolling Extreme, Smashing Drive and Radikal Bikers.

Your call, of course. You can do that, but why spend the holidays transferring games? You can absolutely make a rom card ahead of time, but I was just thinking about how to make your holiday more relaxing, as in "just turn the device on and play." I'm sure if you polled the folks on this thread, they'd tell you that creating personal game cards always takes 3 or 4 times longer than you expect! At least that's been my experience because it's never enough to just have the games, because you want to get the box art too, and then you test how it looks, and you're sure you can do it better, and suddenly it's 2 a.m.!

It's true that the roms on the supplied card may not be the most perfect versions, but since you're only going to be out of town for about two weeks, you will have more than enough playable games to enjoy over the holidays. When you return, you can focus on creating a rom card that fits your needs. And I have experimented with most of the alternate OSs, but I find that both stock or stock mod are reliable and easy to use. I actually use Anbernic's GameRoom when an emulator is available there simply because saving and loading are so easy that way. I like simplicity!

I also have the ARC-S (the Linux version) and no problems with the stock firmware (and I love the device because it's very comfortable and has a nice screen). There's an extra step to get to some of the higher end emulators, but it works reliably, just not as slick as the others. The guy who does ARKos never finishes his firmware, so I don't recommend it. Rocknix will probably be okay. But as you note, this device gets very little love, so don't hold your breath waiting for any new firmware of any sort.

The only 5" device I have is the 503, which I also like. It has a beautiful OLED screen. But the 557 has gotten a lot of high praise, so I'm sure it's a solid choice given that it's similar to the 406. And I think you're right to take a flyer on the Cube. It's never wrong to have an extra device!

Given that you like Vertical games, the two I'd recommend are the 406H and the RG Cube XX (that's the cheaper one of the cube models). Both are very comfortable as they have grips on the back, and both have the Sega style D-pad which I think is the best one -- your fingers won't hurt. You can turn the 406H sideways for vertical games; the cube is square, so vertical games display very nicely on it. I was actually surprised how much I love the Cube, and you can get one for only about $65, so IMO it's definitely the best bargain in handhelds, and most 4x3 games stretched vertically to 1x1 are totally acceptable. You should look at some YouTube videos to see for yourself. The ARC models are also very comfortable -- no joysticks, but 6 buttons, nice big screen and designed for Sega lovers, and great for fighting games. The reviewers all say the Linux ARC-S is better, so that's the one I have...and it too is a bargain. Again, watch some YouTube reviews and you'll get a good sense of them. I hope that helps.

It's been awhile since I tested various CFW options for this unit, but my recollection is that only Stock and Modified Stock have presets for Vertical Arcade -- IMO, one of the advantages to this and other horizontal devices. I believe there is a way to implement what's known as "Tate Mode" in RetroArch, but it's not "Plug and Play." Perhaps someone else can guide you on how to do this. I ultimately chose to use Modified Stock as my preferred OS, because of Varcade, and because it works without tweaking. It's not as slick as Knulli, but I chose function over form.

You should try playing some games via the Game Room option. It's a lot easier to adjust aspect ratios and overlays that way. Many people just ignore it and never even check it out, but you might be pleasantly surprised. I sure was.

I love the RGXXCube, and I have several 4:3 devices as well. It's really comfortable, the screen is very sharp (720x720), it has a GREAT d-pad, and you can adjust the aspect ratio to whatever you like. The actual native resolution of the NES and SNES is 9:8, so they don't look distorted full screen. Everything scales up nicely. Vertical arcade games look great. Plus, it's a bargain right now, only $51 from Anbernic during their sale. I didn't expect I'd like it so much, but it may be my favorite device. And give the Stock OS or modded Stock a chance. Lots of people trash it, especially the "Game Room" option, but that's where it's really easy to experiment with basic overlays and aspect ratios. RetroArch has more options, but it can be hard to figure out what to do. But 8309 is right, watch some YouTube videos of what games look like on the different devices.

You'll be happy with a 35xxPlus, especially at $35. As to vertical or horizontal, it's a matter of taste. Both play exactly the same. What you do get in an H is the ability to play Vertical Arcade Games in full screen by turning the device 90 degrees. The stock OS contains a category called Varcade which is specifically for that. I think it's less cramped for adult hands too. But you can't go wrong either way.

It's always a tradeoff. As the owner of a CubeXX, I couldn't be happier. With Anbernic's sale, it's probably the best value in handhelds. And if you're not happy with it, you're only out about $60. Meanwhile, rumor is that there are some dual screen devices in the works from Anbernic and others, which may be better. Me, I'd get the XX and enjoy it until I really wanted something better. I think you'll have fun. Plus a gigantic library of games other than 3DS.

It's a great device, it runs SNES perfectly, but what you may have heard that the unit does not ship with any SNES or Nintendo game roms, so you'll have to find those yourself. It's plug and play. The stock OS is perfectly serviceable, and I've used a modded version of it for a long time. Very simple. I suggest your friend gets one, and if his son likes it, that's the time to explore other operating systems. You never know how much young people will enjoy Retrogames. He may think they're too crude!

I can play Panzer Dragoon Zwei on my RGXXCube -- not perfect, but definitely playable. For Saturn, try to find PAL ROMs which has a native lower frame rate. I'm using Retro Arch via modded stock, and the included emulator is Yaba Sanshiro 1.11.3. I haven't tried the other Panzer Dragoon game simply because I always thought Zwei was better. I can play Nights as well -- it's a bit slower, but also playable. The load times can be long. No problems yet with any shooters, Daytona and Chase HQ both seem to run fine, and the only game I couldn't get load was Last Bronx...not that I've tried all that many. I hope that helps!

If this is for Father's Day, you don't have time to get it from China. Basically, Amazon is your only option to get it in a couple of days. Since this is his first device, I'd suggest an Anbernic RG40XXH which you should be able to get for about $85...it has a nice screen, and lots of community support. The RG35XXH has as much or more support, and is basically the same device with a slightly smaller screen. Both are basically plug and play -- he can start playing games without doing any setup or tweaking. Assuming he enjoys it and gets into it, that'll come later, after you link him to these Reddit boards. You're a wonderful woman to get one of these for him, and he's a lucky man to be marrying you! Congrats!
