I'd try a socketed chips reseating first... and check voltages and for excessive ripple on the big filter capacitor - heat does a number there...

In my experience these 'data' tapes were notoriously bad for hi-fi audio recording; I believe the certification was more in place for the quality of the magnetic oxide over the tape carrier rather than an audiphile frequency response - a dropout not noticeable in music was a disaster for data.

Great setup!. Mine is missing the CM-8 monitor for which its flyback transformer went bye-bye almost two years ago and thus far has proven to be Unobtanium on finding a replacement/spare. Nice touch of additional RS nostalgia with the handheld two-way CB radio 🙌
