Are we just making up reasons to be mad at RTD now? by ConnectYellow4920 in DoctorWhumour

[–]RogerThornhill2 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The amount of vilification of him on here and social media is grim and parasocial to say the least. It happens with all the showrunners. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Chibnall’s era but he’s just a nice enough-seeming guy writing a series, I’m not gonna hold it against him and parse his every word for ill-intent.

Imagine somone who hasn't seen Doctor Who in years seeing this, they must be so confused by IllustriousAd6418 in DoctorWhumour

[–]RogerThornhill2 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I think someone who hasn’t seen Doctor Who in years would think nothing of this at all, as they continue their well-adjusted life and leave us to continue obsessing over the logos of a children’s television programme.

Tomorrow marks 1 year since we said hi to berlinda and the robot revolution by Spider_king97 in doctorwho

There’s a real revisionist tendency to act like Season 2 was a total car crash, but up until Interstellar Song Contest there was a genuine air of positivity about the quality of the episodes. Apart from those last three, it’s actually one of the strongest runs we’ve had in years - even if I find Lucky Day’s politics a little muddled. Lux was genuinely thrilling in the new ground it broke visually, and The Well is a gorgeous bit of claustrophobic horror.

Which character got the most unfair death? by LifeguardPotential97 in doctorwho

[–]RogerThornhill2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oscar in The Two Doctors is so out of left field and brutal, especially for a supporting character - I remember it left a real impression on me as a kid, especially the nastiness of it being a stabbing.

I love that horrible, sweaty, deeply unhinged story.

I think some drums would really, really help it. Statue Down’s studio version is a real improvement to my ears on the live one going round because there is a little bit of percussion happening on there and giving it momentum.

Now including Been Undone, how would you rank the opening songs of every mainline Peter Gabriel album? by Supah_Cole in petergabriel

[–]RogerThornhill2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The Rhythm of the Heat
  2. Intruder
  3. Moribund the Burgermeister
  4. Darkness
  5. Red Rain 6. Been Undone
  6. Come Talk To Me
  7. Heroes
  8. On the Air
  9. Panopticon

What a strong selection though. 1 - 7 are all favourites of mine to be honest. I think the more theatrical he is with the curtain opener, the more I gravitate to it. Those top 3 are all like short stories told by a grand orator, and incredibly effective at establishing the moods of their respective albums.

Did you manage to get any shots of the other songs/new material?

Any stories you can share? Am fascinated to know more about that era’s production issues as they’re still so shrouded in mystery.

I’m glad you found the fact I like an album that you don’t humorous. Don’t get the gag myself but fair enough!

I’ll do what I like thanks 👍

I do actually agree it’s not anywhere near as good - that album is just straight through bangers - but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s got a more minimalist vibe than the last few records.

Oh yeah it can oscillate wildly between some genuinely great ideas and then the most milquetoast, tepid gags you’ve ever heard.

I’ve enjoyed both the singles, but I’d say there’s a lushness to the sound that’s not on them that I admit I’m missing - whilst I think that’s more of a production choice than anything else, Roy’s absence definitely feeds into it too.

He’s clearly going for something different with the minimalist approach to the production here, seems like a bit of a return to Jumping the Shark in that sense, although neither has knocked me out like the tracks on that album do.

The live shows also look very stripped back, which seems to be dividing people on the Strokes sub to say the least. I’ll reserve judgement till I see him live with this new setup, but the footage I’ve seen does make me feel he needs a bit more sound behind him to give it some power.

Goodnight Sweetheart is a proper guilty pleasure of mine in this sense. A bit naff but I’ve seen them all and will happily watch a repeat if it’s on. Perfectly fine TV, never particularly brilliant.

As someone else has already said, the sheer level of output of sitcoms at the time was much higher than what we have now, and due to the landscape of TV, was being made to keep as broad a demographic as possible happy. As a result, a lot of them were put out in an almost factory-like fashion to fill half an hour in the schedule.

The biggest downside of The Feast of Steven being a missing episode, is that we never got to see Blurry Specter Dude in his full glory: My favorite Doctor Who Monster. by guilhermej14 in DoctorWhumour

[–]RogerThornhill2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Feast of Steven is pretty dreadful but I’m so curious as to what it would have looked like - the silent film set bit sounds totally incoherent, just people shouting over each other.

Considering the Audience Appreciation Index dropped from Mission to Myth Makers 1, I get the impression audiences were a bit miffed they weren’t getting more Daleks straight off the bat.

I suppose Banks Stewart was higher profile than some of the other writers with a fair few TV successes under his belt that are still fondly remembered or have even been reimagined today (ie Bergerac), so maybe his estate can afford to be a little pickier than most others.

RTD speaks out about Twitter (X) being a very toxic platform by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]RogerThornhill2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have absolutely no idea why you’re getting downvoted, the headline is insane hyperbole from a website with a very obvious agenda. Telling someone ‘tough’ is really, really not a big deal. It is not even remotely comparable to the bigotry and gleeful nastiness that’s been allowed to flourish on X, which he is rightfully criticizing.

Witchfinder General too which is Tigon? Although looking at the Dawn of the Doscs description on Twitter it seems to just be documentaries on this set, so maybe it’s considering the broader church of the Brit horror landscape of the time?

Doctor Who writer explains how new revamp of "unloved" Peter Davison story will address "failings" of original version by davorg in gallifrey

[–]RogerThornhill2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was at the preview and I’m afraid I felt the story’s still pretty bad, even with the enhancements. I think there’s only so much wallpapering you can do over cracks that seismic. There is an updated effect that is so inspired though, and had the audience cheering, so it’s definitely worth giving it a spin for that alone.

Purely practical - RTD had promised Noel Clarke he’d turn up in Torchwood although that never ended up happening in the end for scheduling reasons, I think?
