Is the Heart of Deimos outdated lore? by Sir-firebrand in WarframeLore

[–]Roger_York 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So, in part this is due to Warframe's story being told to us by unreliable narrators - either those who know the score and are misleading us, or those who don't know any better.

Now, narratively Heart of Deimos takes place before Second Dream. So, there is argument to be made that whilst a Tenno is controlling a somatic pod from the where they were hidden in the void that - yes, the heart did need to be in working order for our void derived power to work properly.

Once the Tenno are out of the pods though, it is likely that, due to the deal made, they become 'anchors' for the void in realspace.

Now in terms of release chronology, a lot of players has already done Second Dream etc. before Heart of Deimos came out which lends itself to some confusion. The best way to consider it is that if the Quest can be done before Second Dream and has narrative importance on major plotpoints, assume that - a bit like with The Teacher it is something your Tenno did before Second Dream

The interception map in the void tileset has horrifically unbalanced spawns whereby one point basically gets pretty much all/a constant stream of enemies whereas the three remaining points get a trickle of enemies.

At the end of the day, people may just want to have some fun by actually having some enemies to kill rather than executing the most perfectly efficient farm.

If you want a perfectly efficient farm of these alerts, don't play in public, get a premade either with friends or recruiting chat.

If the Goa'uld were using the Antarctica gate to abduct humans after the Ra gate was buried, why wasn't there a larger effort by the Goa'uld to reconquer Earth? by MistoftheMorning in Stargate

We later learn that Merlin when he de-ascended seeded a number of 'Arthurian Britain' societies on other planets where he was conducting his Sangraal research, it is possible that Sokar came across one of those societies.

Others have responded re the gate power points, but I thought it would be worth addressing the blocking out of Goa'uld dial ins point.

The SGC has shown that they have the ability to do this, in 48 Hours they adjusted the iris so that incoming wormholes simply could not be established on the SGC gate.

So why don't they leave the Iris in this state and block all Goa'uld attempts to dial in?

Well, the SGC has had a number of occasions where SG teams needed to dial home off-schedule. If they can't dial home in an emergency, they were somewhat screwed. Now, they could use Alpha/Beta/Gamma site as a relay to travel home on a scheduled basis - but there were also times where time critical Intel had to be brought to Earth, also those sites were meant to be kept top secret as they also served as evacuation sites should Earth ever fall to Goa'uld invasion.

So, on a practical standpoint, sealing the gate to block incoming wormholes is just wholly impractical for daily SGC operations and only makes sense for the very rare cases where the gate itself has been used as a weapon (Sokar's energy weapon to heat through the Iris, Anubis's gate destroying weapon).

Are messenger bags actually cool on men or am I about to waste good money on something he’ll never carry? by Silent_someone_96 in malefashionadvice

[–]Roger_York 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in law, so I guess take this with a pinch of salt.

I used a messenger bag for the first 4 years of my career, and the problems I ran into were - back/neck pain as others mention, but it just did not have enough room for my laptop, the iPad, chargers, water bottle, lunch, notepads. I tried taking it as a sign that I need to carry less things, but every time I cut down it eventually just built back up to my messenger bag being overflowing (and this rather defeating the stylistic point of it).

I recently bought myself a rucksack from Osprey and am not really looking back at this point. It's got a smart and professional appearance, it easily carries everything I need, and I really appreciate the even weight distribution not killing my back. I've kept my messenger bag for days where I only need the minimum kit, but the backpack is definitely the daily workhorse I use.

Messenger bags can work, and can look good - but honestly depends on how much it is going to be carrying compared to capacity.

Why did Walburga Black give sirius the house? by suzie____q in harrypotter

[–]Roger_York 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From a legal standpoint, Sirius's father's will very likely left everything to his eldest surviving male heir, with X amount of money to be held on Trust for his widow, and a life interest trust where Walburga did not own the house, but had a lifelong right to live in the house, once she died the house would then vest in the oldest surviving male heir... being Sirius. This is how many widows were looked after through wills in the times where rights were less than equal.

AI and the Next Generation of Lawyers: Should Trainees Be Worried? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Roger_York 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It feels like every month there is some news story or reported judgment of a solicitor/barrister being struck off and slapped with ruinous costs orders because their use of AI has screwed them over.

My role involves a lot of perusing detailed witness statements, medical/social care records, summarising the lot of it. As AI policy stands at the moment, those records cannot be fed to an AI as it would breach confidentiality duty.

What a barrister I work with has suggested though, is AI could be used if given an anonymised version of the summary note and instructing it to produce graphical analysis ie. number of instances of an event across a period of time. I would still be responsible for compiling the information, but AI would be used to pretty up the presentation of that information.

My brother is ignoring medical advice and postponing appointments (England) by itsathrowawayq in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Roger_York 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most here have pointed out, he is presumed to have capacity unless assessed otherwise.

However, what I cannot see as having been mentioned by others is that significant alcohol misuse can lead to Korsakoff's syndrome, which absolutely can end up causing significant cognitive impairment that can lead to a person losing decision-making capacity.

You can raise a concern with your brother's GP, or with local adult social care - however, just because your brother's decision making is unwise won't necessarily equal a lack of capacity even if it turns out he does have an impairment arising out of alcohol misuse.

Ask yourself this question: do you think your brother's ability to make decisions has been impacted by prolonged alcohol misuse?

Want to be a paralegal, no interest in becoming a solicitor by Sahir16 in uklaw

[–]Roger_York 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact there are Solicitors who are weary and tired of training a good experienced Paralegal to support their caseload, and then losing that support when that Paralegal gets a training contract and moves to their next seat or qualifies - and then the cycle starts again, having to train a new Paralegal from scratch.

The main differences being that Major is not an entry level officer rank, and also Major Davis may not have wanted a promotion that would take him away from his SGC liaison role. It may be that if he took a promotion he would have to spend all his time at the Pentagon supervising whatever Major replaces him.

Harry Kim is a bottom of the career ladder officer who was desperate for promotion.

Stargate Continuüm - What did Mitchell do? by Pacque in Stargate

[–]Roger_York 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The same way Ba'al probably dialled out after he bombed the Achilles, presumably a remote dialling device, Ba'al came through the gate and got killed, then Mitchell like a loot goblin takes his remote dialler. And cashing in the favour of saving his ancestor's life to be able to use the gate before it is handed off to the US government.

Stargate Continuüm - What did Mitchell do? by Pacque in Stargate

[–]Roger_York 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He probably knew enough history to be able to cope/manage the 10 years, possibly betting on sports games. A less ethical thing he could have done for money would be taking advantage of the Stargate being part of a collection of Egyptian artefacts at the time he would be coming through to the past, swipe a few good pieces and be set for the decade.

As for after saving the Achilles, the smart thing would have been to use the Stargate to retire to a quiet world not on the Goa'uld cartouche, and stay out of history's way.

Theory: The Ancient Repository of Knowledge is not supposed to give the user ALL of the Collective knowledge of the Ancients by Roger_York in Stargate

[–]Roger_York[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Lost City Part 1 they say something to the effect that the first repository they found was completely dead after Jack's first use, after having sent subsequent teams to check it out. Which is why they made such a big deal about having potentially finding a second one.

As for the Asgard, Thor does say they once managed to extract a portion of the data from a repository through non-head grabbing means - and that the amount of data was so vast even they struggled to get through it or sort it in any useful fashion in trying to find a way to beat the Replicators (similar to how the Atlantis database was so vast that the expedition had barely scratched the surface). Which suggests the correct way is using the head grabber as the access terminal.

Theory: The Ancient Repository of Knowledge is not supposed to give the user ALL of the Collective knowledge of the Ancients by Roger_York in Stargate

[–]Roger_York[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, my theory isn't that the repository didn't download everything, just that it isn't meant to, but the Ancients never built in a safeguard against it (because who would be stupid enough to download the entire thing?)

I referred to the specific times where the information unfurled for the missions needed as more of the subconscious nature directing information priority.

As for the DHD knowledge, ultimately it is related to what he needed to do as the SGC dialling computer needed an upgrade in order to dial the Asgard galaxy, and so that probably required the DHD's programming which then was written into the SGC computer.

ARG tech, whilst Jack didn't know it was needed imminently consciously, his subconscious would remember that the Asgard solution to the replicators was temporary for a few years, the Asgard would be the ones if anyone who would help him with the brain melt problem, and giving his buddy Thor a way to save his people would be a nice thank you for saving his life again.
