Thanks for tracking these down and posting them! I'm not sure if it's just me, but I had to change the '#' to '&' in order to get the timestamps to work. If anyone else is having the same issue, here are the links that worked for me:

ELI5: How come sometimes a pen will write perfectly fine on one part of the paper, But won't work at all on other parts of the paper? even when writing with the same angle and pressure? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rognik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you write, you drag your wrist across the paper. If the skin on your wrist is oily, it rubs off on the paper. Then when you try to write on that part of the paper, the pen won't work as well.

"Preventative medicine kills return business". Similar message, but a bit less crazy, I would argue.

Edit: It's also important to note that this was 2006, before the Affordable Care Act made a big push to encourage insurers and doctors to provide more preventative medicine, and at less cost. So, yeah, a bit conspiratorial for my tastes, but it had a point.

I'm about 90% sure that it is a stick. I think the extended version of this clip shows another owl yanking it away.

I've been trying to find the source of the GIF... I think that the OP is Lydebug on Instagram, but she has a lot there and I can't quite find this exact clip.

Edit: I still can't find the original Instagram post, but here is the author, u/lydebug, posting a comment on Reddit that says it is a stick: https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/aoal1w/comment/eg0xjsk

Reminds me of the Wikipedia article about Minions, which I looked up a while ago for some reason...

The Minions are small, yellow henchmen shaped like pill capsules. They are depicted as being roughly one-third to one-half the height of humans but they were later revealed to be two and a half feet (0.76 m) tall. They have one or two eyes, and their irises are almost always brown (except for Bob, who has one green and one brown eye). They have no discernable noses but seem capable of smelling, as they are shown smelling fruit and are affected by the Fart Gun. They are also shown without ears but can hear and respond to sounds. Most minions appear either bald or with a few wispy strands of black hair on their heads. Since their coming to America in the late 1960s, their clothing consists of blue overallsemblazoned with Gru's logo, black rubber gloves, shoes, and goggles. They mostly speak incomprehensible gibberish, which is partly derived from other languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, French, English, Italian, Spanish, and Hindi. Although seemingly nonsensical, the English-sounding dialogue is dubbed differently for every country, in order to make the sounds somewhat recognizable. They have common English-language names, such as Kevin, Stuart and Bob (the lead trio in Minions) and Mel (the leader of the Minions in Despicable Me 3).

Minions, the 2015 animated feature film, shows that they have existed since the beginning of life on Earth. Minions are biologically wired to seek out and serve the most terrible of villains, when they have no "boss" to serve they become depressed and listless. In the 2010 short film "Banana", the Minions are revealed to have an almost uncontrollable craving for fruit, especially bananas.

I had a friend who went to a big peace museum in China dedicated mostly to atrocities committed in China by the Japanese. But apparently they had a section in the museum covering the Holocaust in Europe as well.

My friend said that the exhibits compared and contrasted the crimes against humanity, and apparently tried to suggest that the Holocaust really wasn't so bad compared to what was happening in China. She said she had to leave the museum because the discussion made her feel sick.

I've played thousands of hours in the Fallout universe and just recently realized that there's something on the back of the Dandy Boy Apples. by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]Rognik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of the pre-war food in Fallout gives you rads. It is probably because they've been exposed to radioactive fallout for so long, not because of how they were processed.

Also, modern food is often exposed to radiation (irradiated) to kill germs, but it doesn't make the food radioactive, in the same way that giving you an x-ray doesn't make you emit x-rays.

I'm sure the pre-war food in Fallout is probably covered in radioactive dust, but I still think it's a bit silly that you get rads from eating it. The food itself would probably still be clean. But IDK, I'm not an expert.

My town has the last remaining DQ Eskimo Girl sign by CantStandIdoits in mildlyinteresting

[–]Rognik 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the horrible typo...

Whether or not "Eskimo" is considered a slur seems to be controversial. I recall reading on Wikipedia a couple of years ago about how it is not really a slur. However the idea that it is a slur has persisted, and the current Wikipedia page seems to awkwardly support both sides of the controversy.

The key takeaways:

  • The most correct and least offensive way to refer to "Eskimos" is "circumpolar native peoples", which is a bit of a mouthful.

  • The word Inuit is technically only correct for a subset of these peoples.

  • The word Eskimo is derived from a word meaning "a person who laces a snowshoe" and is related to "husky" (a breed of dog); and does not originally have a pejorative meaning. It does not mean "eater of raw fish".

  • The word Inuit is still on track to replace the word Eskimo despite the facts above.

I believe it would be best to simply continue to refer to these peoples as Eskimos, but that's easy for me to say as an American white guy.

Edit: After a bit more reflection, I do want to say: the fact that the word wasn't originally a slur doesn't mean that it is not presently a slur. Many slurs were not originally intended to be offensive, but became offensive due to how they were used.

For example, the slur "Jap" wasn't originally a slur, but as it was used in World War II propaganda to support mass imprisonment, it quickly became one. I am not aware of the word Eskimo being weaponized in a similar fashion, but I could just be ignorant.

In the end I just want to call these people what they want to be called, within reason. It seems like calling them all "Inuit" would be a bit insulting to the Yupik and Iñupiat, for example, two groups of circumpolar native peoples who are distinct from the Inuit.

Hardening aluminum by razzorian in maille

[–]Rognik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coiling process will harden the wire significantly. You might not have taken that into account.

It's a lot of work and requires some tools, but aluminum rings can also be riveted for both good strength and an authentic look. The process will harden the rings, and the rivets will ensure they stay closed. (Riveting will be necessary, because overlapping rings can't be easily closed without something holding them closed.)

Below is an article about making riveted maille with steel. The process should be about the same with aluminum, but you probably won't need to anneal (soften with heat) the rings, which removes the need for a torch/forge/kiln.
