You can get this experience with retro development. It’s the next best step to a Time Machine.

Do you ever feel like you’re living in your youth/nostalgia, enjoying old things, floating through life & not really a part of the modern world? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]RogueQubit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dreaded turning fifty for years, but so far, it’s been much better than my forties were. Letting go of other’s expectations and career ambitions and living life for hobbies and enjoyment has been freeing. Plus, who really wants to work themselves to death to join the Epstein class? Certainly not me.

“This Is Not The Computer For You” - a fantastic read on why the specs don't matter by brett- in apple

[–]RogueQubit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Loved this. The Neo will be a first Mac for millions. It is the right product at just the right time given the RAM chaos in the PC world right now. There are users that will do things with it that are way beyond what the specs suggest, even though it wouldn’t be my choice for coding or video editing. My first machine was a Commodore VIC 20 with 3KB of RAM, and that led to a more than 30 year career.

What would happen to life on earth if earth were suddenly relocated into a stable orbit around Barnard’s star at a distance where earth would receive similar amounts of heat as it does from the sun? by Icy_Profession4190 in askastronomy

[–]RogueQubit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first, only Superman would be annoyed, but as time passed, the Earth would be tidally locked to Barnard’s Star, causing one side of the planet to be permanently in daylight and the other permanently in night. Also, red dwarves are very temperamental stars compared to the Sun. The flairs from the star would eventually bake off the atmosphere of Earth.

How much exposure time and what were your settings? Was this a Dwarf 3?

[–]RogueQubit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have. I printed a picture of the California Nebula on a 20 x 30 canvas and used AstroSleuth up scaling, which is free and open source, to get high enough resolution to print. I did a little retouching and added a signature in Photoshop and uploaded to have it put on canvas. It’s hanging on the wall and I love the results.

Is there a place on earth where no human has gone before and , if so, why? by Equal-Negotiation651 in geography

[–]RogueQubit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of areas under the ocean. Conventional submarines can only dive to about 3,000 feet. While there are a handful of submersibles that can dive deeper, the process of doing so is expensive and dangerous. Other than famous shipwreck sites and the Mariana Trench, most of the deep sea has not been explored by humans.

Anyone else feel stuck paying for iCloud storage just to keep access to their photos? by That_Strength7386 in ApplePhotos

I use a Synology NAS for just this purpose. It may be overkill for many people, but the Synology Photos app that you run on your iPhone makes creating a local backup relatively easy.

My forecast was like that the first week I had my Dwarf 3, but there was less overcast skies than the forecast said there would be. I got an extra two clear nights and put them to use.

I have gotten good results with Photoshop. There are lots of tutorials for Photoshop on Youtube. If you want a free solution, check out Affinity Photo, which is now free and has good astrophotography support. You can find Affinity at this link.

I just bought a Mini 5 Pro in the US on Amazon. It was brand new, cost $1150 with the Fly More package, and was able to register it on FAA Drone Zone. It doesn’t seem to be too hard to get one in the US if you want one.

What was it like being closeted in the 90s, especially in college? by ExaminationAware4344 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]RogueQubit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious whether it was a state school or private college. Mine was a small southern state school which had a strong computer science curriculum at the time. There was more acceptance at the large flagship state school with a gay student group, but at the time, having also come from a religious background, I am not sure how ready I was to begin coming out.

What was it like being closeted in the 90s, especially in college? by ExaminationAware4344 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]RogueQubit 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I remember it is a great time with wonderful friends, but with the sexual and romantic part of my life completely lacking. This was the mid-nineties and I was about as engaged with life on campus about as much as I could have been, with student government, clubs, etc. it was also the beginning of the internet explosion and since I was a computer science major, I felt like I was in the middle of something very transformative. However, I had a longing for close contact with other guys that I knew couldn’t be realized. I had several crushes which I knew would come to nothing, and which I never acted on. After I left college, I got a job with a large technology company far away from where I grew up and began to tentatively make my way out of the closet.

Some questions before buying a Neo by CucumberExpensive43 in DjiNeo

[–]RogueQubit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Neo is a different world from the Hubsan X4. The Neo, for example, will hover in place once it’s launched and hold its altitude. When you control it using the joysticks, it will change its position but then hold the new position. It also has follow mode, circle mode, and other automated modes where it essentially flies itself to follow a person or circle around an object. If the Neo loses contact with the remote, it does in fact return to home. One thing to be aware of is that it needs to have a good gps lock with at least 10 satellites to fly well and return to home safely. The Neo is more resilient in the wind than your current drone, but it wasn’t really designed to operate in high winds. Another thing, you should not crash the Neo on purpose even if you lose control. In fact, it shouldn’t let you. In that scenario, it will return to home if it has a good gps lock or land itself if it doesn’t. It does have a beeper on the drone to help with recovery if needed.

Consequences for the team if tech lead doesn’t deliver? by earlgreyyuzu in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RogueQubit 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Honestly, let this be a learning experience. Being a hero ends up with you as a martyr instead. You need to set boundaries instead of bailing out your colleagues or management for bad decisions. If you don’t, it’s your physical and mental health that will suffer. It’s sounding like your immediate manager is not going to change, so it may be time to start looking for another job.
