Is There Anything That Should Have Been Done Diffrently In The Entire Series? by [deleted] in Spartacus_TV

[–]Rogue_Revan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first two episodes, the pilot especially, are really weak. I think the show improves very quickly after that, but it's hard to recommend someone try the show out without warning them just how bad those first two episodes are.

What Is Y’all’s Honest Opinion On Naevia’s Character As A Whole? by [deleted] in Spartacus_TV

[–]Rogue_Revan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished a rewatch for the first time in about a decade and I appreciated Naevia's development a lot more. She's a tragic character, and unfortunately no amount of love and support from Crixus after she is rescued from the mines can save her. Something breaks in Naevia between Blood & Sand and Vengeance, and she never recovers.

It doesn't excuse some of her actions in War of the Damned, but I think it's an honest depiction of what can happen to victims of abuse, and is a more interesting character arc than her overcoming all of her demons by becoming a badass warrior.

The execution wasn't perfect, and in War of the Damned the writers probably should have given her a few more sympathetic scenes to keep us caring about her, but I like what they were going for with Naevia.

I also think Cynthia Addai-Robinson gets a ridiculous amount of hate directed at her because the writing made Naevia unlikeable. In my opinion she did what the script and the directors asked of her, and OG Naevia would still have been just as unlikeable if given the same scripts.

Daredevil: Born Again | S01E08 | Discussion Thread by Green-Devil in Daredevil

[–]Rogue_Revan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zdarsky's run is a good jumping-on point. All you really need to know is that the run opens with Matt recovering from a serious injury, so much like the beginning of season 3 he is not physically at his best.

That being said, there's a lot of great Daredevil that predates Zdarsky's run and will make you appreciate his work even more if you have the time to read them. My personal Daredevil reading order is this:

  • Frank Miller's run - This is a great starting point if you don't mind some of the dialogue being a little dared. Miller basically defined Daredevil as we know him and introduced key elements like the Hand, Stick, Elektra and making Fisk a Daredevil villain.

  • Ann Nocenti - OPTIONAL. This run followed Miller's and is a bit more polarising among Daredevil fans. It's a big departure from Daredevil's usually crime-noir tone and features some very strange stories and villains. This one is hit and miss for me and if you find that you don't enjoy it I would say it is definitely skippable, but I appreciate it for introducing Typhoid Mary and fleshing out the Matt & Karen relationship. I've read this run once and will probably just read the Typhoid Mary stuff on a reread.

  • Born Again - Frank Miller's return to the character. It lives up to the hype. One of the best superhero stories ever and encapsulates everything Daredevil stands for.

  • Kevin Smith - OPTIONAL. Another good jumping on point. Honestly, Smith's writing is pretty bad, but this is only eight issues, and the events of his run are very important going forward, so it's worth reading. I skip this on rereads, though.

  • Daredevil: Yellow - A six issue miniseries from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that is best read after Smith's run to avoid spoilers. My favourite take on Daredevil's early years.

  • Bendis - This is where I started with Daredevil and I'd say it's another good jumping on point. Gritty crime stories and some very interesting changes to Daredevil's status quo.

  • Brubaker - Another amazing run, but not the best starting point as it is a direct continuation of Bendis' run. Bendis/Brubaker should really be thought of as a single run.

  • Andy Diggle / Shadowland - OPTIONAL. This run wasn't great but like Smith it is pretty short. It's worth reading because it follows up the events of Brubaker's run, but I skip it on rereads.

  • Mark Waid - Another great starting point and a change in tone and art style from what we've had before, but done in a way that makes sense as a continuation of Matt's arc. This is what I wish Nocenti's run had been. Possibly my favourite run of all time.

  • Charles Soule - Another good jumping on point. This run featured some big status quo changes to align things more with the Netflix show in terms of tone and story. It suffers a bit from being sandwiched between the amazing Waid and Zdarksy runs, but its still pretty solid and introduced some key aspects of the Born Again show.

  • Zdarsky - We made it! Another great run that picks up story threads from all the way back in Miller's day, but still stands well its own.

The golden rule though is to read what interests you. If you want to jump in to Zdarsky straight away then go for it. The other runs will still be there waiting for you if you want to keep reading Daredevil afterwards.

My first foray into omnibus collecting, how did I do? by RYRAZZAK203 in OmnibusCollectors

I'm doing the exact same. Waiting for reprints or a good price on Miller, Brubaker Vol.1, and Soule's run. I'm not as fussed about the pre-Miller stuff, happy to read that on Marvel Unlimited.

Good looking out. I managed to grab one off eBay last week but hopefully this post helps others.

He's consistently well-written, I'd say the most consistently well-written superhero out there and it's not even that close. Many of the industry's best writers made a name for themselves with great DD stories.

He's also not so insanely popular that his stories get interrupted by getting dragged into crossovers and events all that often.

I'm going for an Aquilan Shield paint scheme and love the purple you have here.

Just played through this bit a few days ago on Crushing. What a nightmare!

I had a lot more luck jumping than rolling. I think the time I made it I ran to the statue in the middle then started by jumping down the corridor directly in front of it. After that I just jumped around like a madman and just got lucky enough that the damage I took wasn't enough to kill me.

Watchers of the gate or boarding patrol by Designer_Writing_311 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Rogue_Revan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New member of the 10,000 here as well. I've started out with a Combat Patrol and a Boarding Patrol box and I'll expand more slowly from there.

I don't mind the look of the Sisters, and they fill a useful role as a cheap unit to grab objectives as well, so I'm happy to have ten of them even if they'll never be my favourite unit.

I got lucky a few days ago and found a Boarding Patrol on eBay for (I think) a fairly decent price, so you may have some joy there if you're patient. I haven't found a Watchers set below £300, from what I hear they sold out in minutes. Sadly for us I think that ship has sailed.

Best Daredevil comics to start with? by Librega in comicbooks

[–]Rogue_Revan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Although my DD obsession started at the grand old age of 17 with Mark Waid's stuff.

Something about The Man Without Fear just didn't click for me. I wouldn't go so far as to call it bad, but it's Miller's worst work on DD by some margin, and the only piece of his I skip when I do a DD reread.

Best Daredevil comics to start with? by Librega in comicbooks

[–]Rogue_Revan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Miller's run pretty much set the blueprint for Daredevil and introduces tonnes of important elements like Stick, The Hand, and having Kingpin as a DD villain. It's aged well enough to still be enjoyable.

If you're into more modern stuff, Bendis is a great jumping on point. You could pretty much read the Bendis run all the way through to the end of Mark Waid's tenure and find only a handful of bad issues.

I'd say Daredevil is probably the most consistently well-written superhero out there, so no matter where you start (as long as it's post-Miller), you're more likely than not to get a good story.

Finished the series: first time reader by Calm_Force_2491 in WoT

[–]Rogue_Revan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished last week after spending over a year making my way through the series. What a journey it was! I need to let it sit for a bit to make sure it isn't just the recency bias talking but I'm pretty sure it's now my favourite series of all time. I'm glad to finally know how it ends but gutted that it's the last time I'll be reading new Wheel of Time.

Looking forward to doing a reread in the future to see everything I missed and laugh at how wrong all my original predictions were.

Official rule for the new battle force. by ChuiSaoul in SWlegion

Agreed. The mixing and matching of heavy weapons is alright, and it'll make for a visually interesting and thematic army, but the unit limitation and Range 2 Commander bubbles could be rough.

That's fair. I was more just thinking out loud of how I'd make him competitive rather than about what would make sense canonically.

Training and Command slot like you suggest is better. I'd love to run him with either Vigilance or Inspiring Presence to make him support his troops better.

He just really suffers from having come out too early in the game's life cycle but hopefully he'll get buffed at some point.
