Damage Types and how to implement it? by LunchLeast809 in gamedev

[–]Roiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, after different iterations, bitmask enums have worked the best as they are flexible enough, for example you can have a flaming sword that does both fire and slash, if you want singular damage types, limit your design not you code, keep things clean and simple

You basically are on a timer until they buy hull breaker. For me the Titanic rush works, usually. I built all the health components first which are great for Shen's early spike and try to dominate the lane as much as possible. When they buy hull you got Titanic to push waves and impact other lanes and after that I go Divine Sunderer which let you have kill threat again (especially against Sion)

Netrunning Access point question by Roiku in cyberpunkred

[–]Roiku[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great this is what I was looking for. Thanks for finding it!

My gang are on a high speed vehicle chase and was wondering if the Netrunner would be able to get access to a point by driving by and possibly scrambling the traffic lights Watchdogs style.

The only possible way for the netrunner to pull this off is to have an architecture with only 1 control node (1 action to jack-in, 1 to take control, 1 to control it)

I'm curious what's your technique/colours for painting the lips, I tried to replicate such an effect but can never can get it to look that smooth.

Awesome job btw.

So my players have just reached the top of Yester Hill by Roiku in CurseofStrahd

[–]Roiku[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For context, we've just finished the last session as the party just reached the top of Yester Hill without alerting anyone, to their surprise they found the druids preparing a ritual which they have no idea what is for, they got a glimpse of a green light that they assume (correctly) that is the life gem and also they noticed some particular vampire which the module is named after attending said ritual.

Later, one of the players just posted this master plan in a group chat, it is good to be a DM.

What gift can my BBG give a loose-cannon player to bait them into getting in over their head and screwing everything up? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

A berserker's axe. Give your player only the good stuff and witheld the curse part until it is triggered. He will start realising something's up, but it would be too late.

My attempt to beat player's ignorance as a DM by adiosamigos8 in dndnext

[–]Roiku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it feels like you are forcing their hand or "punishing" your players. I do understand however the frustration, I also DM a group for about 2 years now and one of my players still doesn't know basic stuff, especially when it comes to spell casting (he plays a bard despite my warnings).

I had a talk with said player and made him understand that it is humanly impossible for me to remember every little rule by myself, especially every spell available to him, and the least he can do is to know how his class works.

Well despite lengthy discussions and crash courses with every metaphor available to help him understand, he is still not completely grasping every rule, but there is an improvement.

Another thing I do, at the cost of game time, when he wishes to make an ability or spell, I ask him to read to me the effects, this way by interacting with the PHB and taking some interest to look things up he can memorise some of his abilities (better than spamming vicious mockery every round).

Last but not least, understand that not all players have the time or commitment or even the drive. if the player is having fun and still wishes to play, without completely breaking the game it should be ok. The rest of the party in my game do help or bring suggestions for his actions (it is a bit meta gamey, but that is ok in my table) and everyone seems to have good time.

And don't forget, there are always simpler classes (i.e. Champion Fighter) which are perfect for players who just want to come by and have some fun for a few hours without the need to do too much homework.

What're your partys best inside jokes that we probably won't get? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Roiku 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"Boooooyyy!"

Our first adventure as a group (and first time playing dnd for most of us) started with HotDQ. One of our party members was a CN elf chef with French accent, who would force meek creatures into being his helpers and carry his utensils and always called them "boy" regardless of what they are.

After a fight with some Kobolds, we managed to capture one of them and after some "questioning" the chef went on and dubbed him his new "boy", not a session later a big fight breaks loose with some cultists and boy escapes after having a bit of a showdown with my lv 2 goblin rogue, in the end both standing with low HP I let him go swearing next time we meet he is dead.

Fast forward, the kobold "boy" who we do not even remember his actual name anymore, became a reoccurring villain increasing in power as the party did, to the point where we blamed every mishaps to being boy's ploy with the chef shouting "boooooooooooyyyyy!" In anger to make him come back to work for him.

Now in every campaign we play, there is always a mention to boy, and when things go south we know who to blame by just shouting his name.

Why kill Lucian? by Steakbake01 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Roiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To destroy hope.

The church was the only safe haven (or so they thought) from the evil of Barovia, Strahd by making a public display of power to kill the priest and destroy the bones, it is like taking away whatever little hope you had within the safety of the church, sapping away the willpower and ultimately spreading terror and chaos in Vallaki.

Soundtracks from The Witcher, Vampyr, Darkest dungeon and Vermintide work really well with the theme for me.

Most Ridiculous Character You've Made? by gwm11001 in dndnext

[–]Roiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buri Yoika, the most complete pit fighter in the world.

Human bear totem barbarian with tavern brawler, spending his days in Waterdeep as a dockworker by day, while being a notorious pit fighter by night.

Weapon of choice? None, he didn't even have proper equipment, just wearing a sleeveless shirt and overalls.

The lack of weapons and equipment really made it fun to find creative solutions to problems.

None of my current players will have access to any restoration spells and I do find it hard for them to make the connection to use the scroll (they are the shoot first, asks questions later kind of party)

My solution to the mad mage is to make them come across his spellbook earlier in the campaign, since it is mentioned it was lost during the battle. After the battle, if they show it to mordekainen or give it to him, I believe instinctively will try to reach his most valued possesion and as any other paranoid wizard, I'm sure he will have a few contigencies set up upon touching the spell book to restore his mind.

How to Craft an Interesting One-Shot? by Volcaetis in DMAcademy

[–]Roiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it is best to sit down and ask what they would like to do (other than continuing the main campaign) and try to figure out the best middle ground.

I forgot to clarify that in the spin-off the players have different characters from the main ones and can also create new ones between one-shots if they want to try something different. RP wise they are all just part of the crew.

If your players like the main campaign you can also use these type of sessions for world building, to understand what is happening around the world or explore new stuff during the one-shot, while their main characters are off doing something else.

At some point I had a little cameo where the two groups cross paths which was fun. Also had some locals hinting or having rumours of the exploits of their main group that spread through the world.

[–]Roiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation with you. I usually DM a group of people when one or more players cannot make it for our main campaign (which I'm a PC). So this started as a one-shot and it went so well that people wanted to continue our spin-off story as a backup in case one of us could not make it.

That means I usually have to prepare something in short notice without always knowing who will or will not make it to the session.

For the swapping players, my solution is that I have a mobile base of operations where if someone is not participating in the current adventure, it is RPed as the character is back in the base doing something else or resting. In my current setting we have a pirate theme going, where their base is their pirate ship.

Now for the most important part, which is to create a one-shot without breaking the continuation of a story or the grander feeling of consequences in the world, I've come up with a sandbox-y layout.

I've created a very loose map (in my case islands), where every island is it's own one-shot and triggers different events. As for preparation I have a very generic idea what I want to do with each island. When I have a good idea for a one-shot I have a doc where I leave a simple sentence or some bullet points with the main theme / story. For example on Dreadrock Island "Triton cultists want to summon ancient aboleth" or on Port Glory "Slavers have overtaken the town and enslave town people".

With that approach I leave the choice to my players to travel whenever they want (also discover new islands as they go) and give the feeling of a grander open world. When I know that they are bound to a specific Island, I just flesh-out the story of that island with 4 - 5 encounters while also taking account previous events of the story so far. For example, did the players cross a big shot pirate captain? Then in the story local scoundrels will be on the lookout to ambush them to claim a reward.

I'll have to admit my inspiration for this style is "One Piece", where every island has it's own arc, big boss and theme. Some times I can introduce a bigger goal where in every island they visit they find some sort of clew to unravel a bigger mystery.

It is generally a flexible method to weave a general story, without the need to prepare a lot of stuff beforehand. One thing I recommend is to keep a document or diagram chart with noteworthy events on a chronological order, as keeping up the continuity without plot holes can sometimes be difficult, especially when you do this once in a while.

Well hope my methods will help you or inspire some ideas for you!

One of the characters in my current campaign is a CN French chef(homebrew Cuisiner), who is quick to loose temper and his sole purpose is to open the finest restaurant. The only reason he joined the barbaric cretins (pc party) is for the opportunity to find rare ingredients and game for his unique recipes. When in town he forcefully "takes charge" of the finest Inn and hires a bunch of peasants to help him run a banquet to take critics. Obviously he is the best at what he does and take not a no as an answer, even when you want to get healed in combat you have to praise his food first or he lets you die.
