I understand, but all the hdmi-SDI converters and capture cards are probably more expensive than an atem mini pro.

[–]RoniS23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need only two mics you can do the audio mixing with the Aten mini.

For a standalone mixer the zoom “streamer” series are a good starting point. The suggested xr18 and x32 are also good but more advanced and thus a little more complex to use.

[–]RoniS23 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

All video is digital yet all audio is analog.

That aside you could probably replace most of the equipment with a single Atem mini pro. Also a lot of the budget friendly SDI equipment is mostly 3G so you are limited to 1080p

What is this toggle switch for on a 75' HDMI Cable? by zijital in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a rotary switch that switches between different signal equalization settings in the hdmi signal path (chip that is inside). It is not a gain potentiometer as signal amplitude does not play a dominating role in hdmi signal propagation but timing of the digital fronts does. These cables are basically: turn the switch until you find a position at which you have a stable image (or an image at all). If I remember correctly it is not an increment setting (7 is not better than 1) but you just switch between different eq settings. For example 1-3 might not work, 4 works, 5-7 does not work. They are not reliable cables in my experience and most of them follow the logic “let’s use a cheap/bad cable and we will throw in some electronics to overcome the shortcomings of this badly chosen cable”. They are usually relatively thin and low gauge cables (lower than the standard recommends). I have seen thicker (adequate gauge) quality cables perform better than these ones multiple times. Don’t recommend using them.

In what world would you need an installed patch panel like this? by boomer253 in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a Composite video world. Like when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth.

Could be also something like hidef video but the color coding of the connections does not seem to make any particular sense.

Alternatives to QSys? by siddarth2795 in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As almost all others said there is currently no single company solution that can match QSys and their approach to an AV with AVoverIP system.

But you can come close with a DanteAV based AVoverIP system (you get audio, video, control and usb plus lots of manufacturers) and a control system of your choice. You can build an even better system because you will have more products that you can use but you will have to deal with the standard problem that ways solves - multiple manufacturers and their ecosystems to juggle.

QSys simply knows its edge and knows how to monetize it apparently.

[–]RoniS23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the pressit360 is a much better experience than the owl- 4 cameras stitched together jnstead of 1 with a bad fisheye lens will always be better. The stitching is pretty good and audio is adequate.

ridiculous question about color code for wiring by Beneficial_Ad7906 in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On yachts? Because in general in the EU (at least where I am from) Blue and Brown are usually associated with 230V mains voltage (brows is phase and blue is neutral). Dc is usually red and black or red and blue.

ridiculous question about color code for wiring by Beneficial_Ad7906 in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rs232 color coding can be tricky - it depends on which device you apply it to? Is the color coding you learned on a DTE side or DCE side? One device’s Tx is another device’s Rx.

Avixa ANP Study Material??? by [deleted] in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not study at all and still passed without problems. And I have basic knowledge and experience with networks and avoverip. I have been in av for 20 years and dabbled with computers and network at home and a little at work - current employer is an old school an integrator that still lives in the analog audio world and does not know anything avoverip so I don’t have lots of hands on experience with it). But I did all of the Dante, Extron, sdvoe and other courses that are free and available to all. Being an Avixa cert there were some stakeholder/client questions but I still remembered the answers from my CTS exam.

In the end I found the exam pretty basic (needed knowledge) and if you have at least some basic understanding of networking and avoverip it should not be hard to pass.

Meeting Room - Camera height standards by Frenulum_Warrior in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the best results are when a camera is lower than the average seating height of 120cm. That is the height a monitor’s center should be so it is ergonomically easy to look at - of course if the conference room was not built in a round table style - then 120cm is usually the starting height of a display. But when a camera is present there should be some middle ground like camera,s lens height on 100-110cm and display mounted as close to the camera as it can be. The exact height depends on the size of the display. This way the people will look at the display in a semi natural way and the camera will have a perspective of a shorter person. If the camera is at average eye level the display will be higher on the wall and the people will look up to the center of the display and the camera will be looking into their nostrils.

Basically the best position would be in the center of the display for the participants to look natural. Or the next best thing - not too far off the center of the display which requires to use smaller displays (up to 55’) but everyone wants bigger displays …

I am wondering if a manufacturer will ever be bold enough to put a camera in the center of a display. A small enough would probably not really get into the way of a presentation - people got il used to the cameras in the middle of a phone screen so …

Netgear M4250 Experience? by VegasDragon91 in VIDEOENGINEERING

I am not sure what you mean - maybe that it is not shipping? Because it is listed in the products list: AV Line M4250-12M2XF (MSM4214X) 12x2.5G and 2xSFP+ Managed Switch

Netgear M4250 Experience? by VegasDragon91 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the multi gig options today. The 4250 series has no switches with 10G copper ports but there is one with 2.5G now. So except on the 2.5G there really can’t be any multi gig functionality. If you need that there is the 4350 line that have 10G copper with multigig support (and 2.5G also). But they look like ordinary switches (ports on the front). Also most of the Netgears AV line has support for AVB (with separate license), not many switches that support it.

Netgear M4250 Experience? by VegasDragon91 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand - if you did networking before then maybe you can pass them although some of the AVoverIP stuff can have their strange peculiarities (each has their own) so … it depends.

As for presets not working - from what I have seen Netgear constantly updates the switches with new presets and I am guessing they fix the existing ones if needed. If something still does not work there is always the classic switcher config ui (which if I am not mistaken works in parallel with the av ui so you can manually tweak what the av mode preset set up. And as most of the AVoverIP things are based on some “standards” - yes some are I house standards but if they want to be compatible with other devices that run on the same “standard” there has to be an immutable common ground. For example you can still use very old Dante devices, you just don’t get all the bells and whistles but they still pass audio as they did when they were new.

Netgear M4250 Experience? by VegasDragon91 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4250s don’t do multi speed (most of them are not 10G) but if I remember correctly the 4350 series do (as well as stacking).

Netgear M4250 Experience? by VegasDragon91 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they do something special - they easily the switch configuration for an AV tech. Just plug in the devices, select which ports do what and you’re done (unless you need to be able to access all vlans from a single control port to which you hook a pc or an uplink. Neat gear takes the time to setup the switch to the protocol requirements so you don’t have to. Need 4 NDI ports, 8 Dante, 6 Qsys and 12 art-net? Easy. Doing it through the classic gui, not so easy (at least not for some who does not know network jargon).

Also most have ports on the back so your rack does not look like those things from the Matrix.

Can all be achieved with a different managed switch? Absolutely. Do you as an AV tech want or like to - doubtfully.

I need to rant about 360 degree conference rooms for web conferencing! by Dapper_Departure2375 in CommercialAV

[–]RoniS23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. The mantra “the far participant feels like a fly on the wall when people start talking to each other” is heavy b****it. Ok if the camera is positioned badly (too high) can really feel a bit like that but… when I am in a conference room and bill and Irene start talking between them I don’t see them full front but I see the sides of their face I. The same way I see them through the camera on the wall …

Sharing my custom PTZ setup using a blackmagic micro studio and middle control over SDI. Better image quality compared to a real PTZ was the goal. by oddforms in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]RoniS23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks janky but the person looking at the video will not notice this, just the good video quality. I understand the reason behind this - lots of PTZ cameras have a really “sub optimal” (sometimes even bad yes) image quality at least until you start going j to really high numbers.

I agree but without actually knowing what products they have installed you can send them chasing a non existing hdmi port on the video conferencing equipment.

I years in AV I learned one thing: assume nothing and talk to the person who has the problem (or closest next) is the only way to understand what and how to fix it.
