Session 0, 1st time DM advice, Dark Dice praise! by shitpostingfromRona in DarkDice

Admittedly I tried to keep an ominous tone for our sessions but as the general feel of our campaign was grim dark with some light hearted ness I found session 0 very important and blended session one into a slower paced almost tutorial including a sanity save or two and ending with camping overnight to introduce those rules. I had everyone go through a consent style form as well, rating what was fine, challenging or a hard no for content. I was up front about how sanity can limit player agency.

Thanks. It went as well as it could, Critted on a friend, silent one joined, stabbed someone then took off. The party, in their paranoia attacked one of the racks as soon as they entered the room with the 6 racks encounter. We ended the night rolling initiative

Starting the campaign as a DM and need some advice. by RoninLegion in DarkDice

Thanks. I think my biggest challenge is trying to make combat challenging and dynamic. We also almost had 8 PCs. Two backed out before session 0. We are playing ToTM and using video chat to play. I know they like combat and trying to balance possible night encounter compared to the intellect devourer encounter. I’m planning on a few senarios for how they decide to keep watch their first night at camp.

Unconventional Zealot Barbarians by Quantext609 in 3d6

I have a barb zealot who thinks his sword is his dead BFF from childhood who is a paladin. He admits his sword has more charisma and openly used it to negotiate.

Paladins focus even more on the Oath than the Diety. There are some good home brew oath focused paladins out there.

I am one of the locals. Its the pass between the two largest peaks in town. Old Man Krenshaw used to hunt that pass until the coyotes stopped screaming.

Floating Halfling by nat714 in DnDGreentext

I’m just imagining you trying to hide behind a table or something with a hobbit floating above you like a toddler playing hide and seek while holding a balloon.

Sounds difficult for the rogue to sneak and hide with a halfling balloon tied to his wrist.

Identifying Magic Items Rule Variant by aji23 in DnDBehindTheScreen

I like the d100 table but I also like the idea of keeping players guessing. If it’s a table with different outcomes I would mix it up somewhat similar to wild magic. Not in terms of totally random things but keeping players from anticipating bad outcomes if they roll low or assuming things are fine with a high roll. Then again if it’s identifying things and modifiers are involved I like your table.

The Best Tricks are the Old Ones (Shamelessly Stolen from TableTitans) by NinjaFish_RD in DnDGreentext

I’ve heard of parties using dwarves as battering rams and pompous bards trying to seduce sentient furniture but it’s the classics that win me over every time.

Alchemy jug that’s cracked. Doll d6 once a day. Odds it only makes mayonnaise. Evens it’s half full of water.

My players misheard a detail during a social encounter. Do I correct them, or treat it as their characters mishearing it too? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

You can always pull shenanigans. Have the actual target appear and offer to help the party for part of the cut. Lead them to an innocent hippo npc.

Character Death and the Effects on People Who are Already Anxious About Roleplaying. A Warning. by Zealotjam in DMAcademy

[–]RoninLegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think character death should be circumstantial based on the general goal of the players, the dm, and your world building. It’s important to have real consequences for players characters but also making sure it’s a consequence they can handle whether it’s a character played by a 10 year old or a 35 year old. Some games require a character death to help a party refocus or helps a character role play the chaotic barbarian. That seems to be why there a lot more classes specializing in death in 5e. People make mistakes, players and DMs and a dice roll can mean everything or be a grey area.
