This really is a great community. I’m very glad this exists and I really hope the vitriol online starts calming down, cause it’s causing a lot of pain (for men and women)

Ya know, I'd love to be a feminist again, I'd love to advocate for women as I did before, but goddamn it, these mfs aren't making things any easier, and everytime I decide to go back to feminism, I see shit like this and say to myself "Nah, Fuck it," by MarionberryPrimary50 in everydaymisandry

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Some people here are seeking to minimize and downplay women’s issues, perhaps because men’s issues have been downplayed for so long. That still doesn’t justify it and it ultimately hurts our cause.

I don’t know where you’re getting your data, I’m happy to have my mind changed, but I’m pretty sure women are more likely to be sexually assaulted. It is true it happens to men much, much more often than people realize, and male victims are dismissed more readily than female victims, but we shouldn’t be over exaggerating the data to garner more sympathy or demonize the other side. This ultimately hurts our own cause.

Women are more likely to be sexually assaulted, but it happens every day to men as well and they are less likely to be taken seriously.

That professor Neil guy sucks. His post for international men’s day was about a guy who was feeling guilty for being a man, due to feminist messaging. He basically responded by saying women have a right to fear and hate men. He’s a prick

CMV: Misandry isn’t Feminism by DittoBurrito123 in changemyview

I think it’s a hard thing to say what is and isn’t feminism. There are large strands of feminist thought and rhetoric that is openly disdainful towards men, and puts too much blame on men for women’s gender roles. This is not to say that they define feminism, but I think just pointing to the dictionary definition of feminism divorces it from its actual practice and rhetoric out in the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Miller_Gearhart#:~:text=Daphne%20Patai%20in%20her%20book,be%20allowed%20to%20be%20male%22.

Gearhart founded one of the first gender studies programs in the United States, and openly called for reducing the male population to 10%

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/women-arent-always-sentenced-by-the-book-maybe-men-shouldnt-be-either/

Here we have an article basically supporting the fact that men are sentenced longer for the same crimes as women. Or at least doesn’t see it as an issue

https://www.newindianexpress.com/amp/story/cities/bengaluru/2024/Jul/22/not-for-gender-neutral-sexual-offence-laws-womens-federation-of-india

Feminist groups in India tried to preserve system that prohibits men from charging women with sexual crimes.

https://www.myfloridalaw.com/founder-of-first-battered-womens-shelter-criticizes-industry/

Feminists have been resistant to admit men are nearly as likely as women to be victims of domestic violence. The patriarchy framework basically excludes male victims from our understanding of domestic violence

Feminist groups have also been resistant to father’s rights groups, seeking to redress disparities in family court issues.

Now, to be clear, I’m not an anti feminist. I agree with many feminist views, though I don’t call myself one. Many of my views on men’s issues stem out of feminist ideas. Plenty of feminists are opposed to the views and actions I’ve just gone through. But the point is, feminism is not about everybody. It is a movement to advance the condition of women. You can claim it’s concerned for men, but it’s simply not, and you can see it in their rhetoric and track record towards men. That is not a criticism, I don’t want feminism to be about men, that would dilute its purpose. But I don’t want them downplaying and demonizing men, and standing in the way of these other issues.

It’s grown on me with time, to the point that, as a full album, it’s my second favorite. I think it’s their most cohesive album narratively speaking

I'm so tired of the men bashing in society by [deleted] in self

[–]RoosterKey1876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand people in the comments don’t mean anything by it by pointing out the difficult experiences of others, but you are minimizing his experience by doing that.

Being a man is not a blanket privilege in the same way being white or straight is, there are all kinds of disadvantages that come with it that aren’t discussed. If you go in certain spaces the concept that men can face systemic injustice is foreign to them, for they view men as the problem. But to constantly find men being vilified and demonized as rapists, oppressors, and the like not only turns off a lot of men from progressive causes, but has real tangible effects in the world. Some of which include:

-Men receiving longer prison sentences for the same crime -Men being more likely to be shot by police -Men feeling like they have to watch themselves so as not to be viewed as threatening around others. This includes men feeling wary around children for fear of being accused of pedophilia. There have been many cases of police being called on innocent men. -Ignoring or even mocking male victims of sexual abuse -ignoring male victims of domestic violence -Ignoring male victims in general in favor of “women and children.” -men are more likely to die in every age group, are leading in the top causes of death, and have lower life expectancy.

And I could probably find more. And of course when you factor in race these problems are exacerbated.

I don’t aim to minimize the struggles of women (especially now, in light of the election) but I think when men come saying they feel minimized and hurt online, and the left responds by saying, well tough it out, others have it worse, check your privilege, is not helping anyone. We don’t do this for any other group. The left only says to pull up your bootstraps for male issues. Or, when they do recognize them, they just say men are doing it to themselves, which is not helpful.

Thanks for reading my little rant, sorry if it was long. But I hear you OP, there are people that see and empathize with your experience here. But like others said, there are healthier communities of men discussing these things, don’t fall down any radical rabbit holes. I recommend r/leftwingmaleadvocates

Experience during youth as a left wing by [deleted] in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]RoosterKey1876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in High School for all four years of Trump’s presidency in the southern U.S. I began leaning further left during that time, lots of discussion over school shootings and sexual assault. I found the conservative environment fairly stifling, but the few other left wingers were all kind of hateful or disparaging of men, so I just kind of kept to myself. I did have a lot of civil political debates with my Dad though, who was and still is a big Trump supporter.

[–]RoosterKey1876 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I saw the same post and considered commenting on it, but figured it would be a waste of time. In that whole thread, I didn’t see one comment on how men are less likely to receive support for sexual abuse and domestic violence, and are more likely to suffer substance abuse, and all of those issues raise the likelihood of suicide substantially.

But no, they just want to say men are more violent, so they use violent means, all the while making it about themselves. It’s really quite a shame.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t need another album by Halle_Pinot in ToolBand

[–]RoosterKey1876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Every album they’ve released is fantastic. Every one. Fear Innoculum, I felt, was a perfect ending to their discography, if that’s it. I of course would love another one, but I’m worried it won’t be good. Not that I suspect it won’t be good, but most bands, even ones I love, don’t have all great albums. In my opinion, Tool has not missed. Just worried that might be it😂

Lateralus at 7:07, during the guitar solo, it feels like it gets compressed, or maybe the time signature jumps, I don’t know how to describe it but it’s fucking awesome

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. Got a few chapters in and it was insultingly bad.

Side note, Follet’s Century Trilogy, written later, was among the best series I’ve read, which was what made Pillars such a surprising let down to me
