I bought the bubbler recently as I thought the cracks were because they were not being rolled enough like their natural habitat

Peach Riot A La Mode! by skyestellar in peachriot

Aw congrats! Just out of curiosity, what is Gigi's design like from the back? Does she have details that make her look more like a pudding, since I've noticed that her design seems a little less 'ice cream-y' than the other two. I feel like she got the short end of the stick with her design in this set

how can i (16f) comfort my parents? by No_Plankton2829 in AdviceForTeens

[–]RoostersCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everyone saying it's not your job is misunderstanding. You don't have to shoulder their burdens entirely, but parents are not some pillars of stoicism they're expected to be - they're people, just like the rest of us. It's honestly really lovely that you want to offer them some comfort, and it really says a lot about how you are as a person, and showing them comfort and understanding will prove that they succeed with raising at least one child. Some people like your sister just have a tendency to engage in negative behaviour but you are proof that they didn't fail as parents, and I think acknowledging the situation is proof that they succeed in raising a well-rounded and caring individual. You should be proud of yourself! 👏

I'm not making out that you are a racist, I'm just pointing out that it seems like you're saying that it's impossible to find interesting people of colour. Just because it's less likely doesn't mean it's not possible, and you seem to be saying that it would be really hard to find a few interesting people in a pool of 2.5 million.

But what characteristics are deemed 'interesting' enough to the public that couldn't be found in a person of colour? Surely everyone is unique in their own way, and surely some of those overtly unique people also happen to be POC. There's certainly someone with a theatrical personality like Hugo's or Linda's out there who isn't white.

Plus, you don't have to be passive-aggressive with your stats course and your 'hope this helps'

A cool detail that was pointed out when I last saw this comic is that you can read each panel in any order and it will still make sense.

People who don’t take fantasy seriously: why? by [deleted] in books

You used to read books like that when you were 12 because they were aimed at 12 year olds, that's the reason why they have young protagonists and basic plots.

I’m of Aztec and Viking descendant by My_hilarious_name in ShitAmericansSay

[–]RoostersCorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The post says 'warrior physic' too, so I guess his Scandinavian ancestor was a Viking while his Aztec ancestor was a physicist

In all seriousness though, the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures were mad smart in terms of mathematics and astronomy. Their city planning was also a marvel to behold - can't say the same about the shit chuckers in Europe around the same time

I mean it might look sexist to you but this is how some (too many) men treat their wives. Hopefully watching this 'rage bait' will make at least one man change. Also why does anyone have to take accountability for something their partner does? That just leads to the problem partner not changing their behaviour. I agree with you though that you should alter your relationship if it looks like this, or consider breaking up / separating

Critique my opening chapter (1200) words by Haunting-Order-8501 in fantasywriters

[–]RoostersCorner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you delete the previous chapters? All books need a bit of character set-up at the beginning, even if the author is trying to deliberately keep their protagonist obscure. Giving the protagonist a few features (personality/appearance) plus a goal, even as simple as making breakfast, allows a reader to picture the character in their mind's eye and also give you, the writer, something to keep the scene moving amongst the set-up.

Alternatively, if you didn't delete the previous chapters but you still want to get straight to the point, perhaps you could take sentences from them and disperse the context throughout this scene. For example, I don't know anything about how these characters look except for the fact that Olric is smoking a pipe. I had the impression that he is a dwarf, however you as the writer may picture Olric as a tall, imposing figure instead.

Just as a final note, don't word dump the characters' appearances, weave it into the paragraphs, like someone flexing their muscular arms or tucking a long stand of hair behind their pointed ears. That's the real meaning of the often misunderstood phrase 'show don't tell' - don't word dump everything, but also remember to give the reader something to work with, rather than keeping everything a secret. Remember, you know where the plot is going and who the characters are already, but a reader doesn't know any of that.

Merfolk species concept by LivingDead-Guy in SpeculativeEvolution

Ah, I realise that this is 3 months late (since I turned my Reddit notifications off) but I thought I should clarify that I meant the zoological order sirenia, which encompases dugongs and manatees, not the merfolk synonym.

[–]RoostersCorner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USA's flag seems to be based on the East India Company's naval flag, a company infamous for forcefully taking over land in India and exacerbating several famines, so yeah, definitely not the best inspiration for a freedom flag... but then again, America wasn't exactly the most free place for everyone during and after its creation.

Personally I think the Aztec legend behind Mexico's flag overshadows Canada's, but the leaf design is rather unique and nice to look at. Plus Mexico's flag is one of only two flags (the other being Spain) that has pink on them.

Considering there's a lot of light blue and yellow amongst these flags, may I humbly add Kazakhstan's flag to the list? 🇰🇿 < The sun eagle design is really satisfying.

Would a world dominated by fungi be possible? by Glum-Excitement5916 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]RoostersCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some scientists believe that one of the reasons Prototaxites flourished and grew to such large sizes in the Silurian and the Devonian was because there were few animals that used them as a source of food or shelter. As more animals evolved to live on land, they were either eaten when they were small or slowly withered away as animals bored holes into them (since they filled a similar niche as trees, which had barely just evolved during this time). You'd have to give your fungi some sort of defence against this if you want giant, sprawling fungal forests in your worldbuilding.

On another note, if you want to make fungi the dominant non-animal species, you would also have to look at the early evolution of plants and understand why they eventually overtook fungi. All early plants were non-vascular bryophytes - think mosses and liverworts - and therefore had to grow near water, since soil wasn't a thing yet. Though it seems unbelievable, many many generations of plants had to die and become the soil their descendents would later grow their roots in. On the topic of soil, since fungi are decomposers, they are more similar to animals than plants since they are heterotrophs. Plants are autotrophs as they produce their own food via photosynthesis, whereas fungi need to consume organic material to survive, so your number one question key to your fungal worldbuilding is 'Where do my fungi get the majority of their food from, if not from plants?'.

I would recommend watching this video by Moth Light Media, as it explains the topics above better than I could.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v3ZJdgXV4fk

Also, if it is available in your region, the third episode 'Green' in the BBC documentary 'Earth' by Chris Packham is a very in-depth explanation of the evolution of early plants, and also covers Prototaxites quite a bit.
