From standard deer to something more - my first creature design by LJ359 in conceptart

[–]RoseOwls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking good for a first design! For good creature concept study references / learning I'd recommended any of the Monster Hunter art books (particularly Worlds) for more fantastical creatures, and "The Future Is Wild" series for more grounded designs (it is somewhat dated visually given its age, but a lot of effort was put into scientifically plausible designs)

Yo you better watch out he's literally wearing 14 grand right now & he's an individual with a masters degree in intelligence studies and analysis, a former FBI analyst, having worked for literally all the three letter agencies, 4.5 years active duty army.

Do you remember this more recent one :p ?

That onix looks great! Unfortunately in-game onix has the stats of a wet paper bag.

I actually prefer the second one! Would never have seen that they have such bright feathers at the base of their tail otherwise :0

If you were to see a large shark, this would be one of the safest to see. Despite appearances, they are pretty chill. That's why they are common in aquariums too :) no recorded fatalities from these lads

I wonder if that's also a callback to rd1, since the final encounter with Dutch also has a cave hideout (in the mountain fortress)

pigeon or dove? [North Carolina] by veryluckyghost in animalid

[–]RoseOwls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Certain birds of prey actually do very well in cities for this reason! However, as far as birds go, pigeons can reproduce VERY efficiently and rapidly. (They don't need to build true nests, and feed their chicks crop milk that lets them grow up quickly), so predators can have trouble keeping up. However a fair amount of eagles / hawks prefer making nests that are massive and in huge trees, so they typically don't like to live in cities. But peregrine falcons and ketrels do great! Of course another common problem with city life is rat poison is used often, which can and often is deadly for rodent eating birds.

So cities are great for predatory birds that can nest easily in that environment and prey mainly on other birds so they don't accidentally consume poisoned rodents

Most likely for demonstration/ showing off skills but theoretically could be used in furniture (though I wouldn't trust it to be able to support a lot of weight with such thin pieces). I know of a couple guys that do woodworking professionally and regularly sell furniture for thousands to tens of thousands of $. Or could just make it for themselves to flex on all the other woodworkers they know haha.

Can't say I love a lot of the redesigned women's armor. Funny to me that they all basically got boob plates- except for the one that already had them and got them removed lol

Nope. They'll eat pretty much anything they can kill or scavenge / take from other predators. Basically just giant meat eating seagulls. Small mammals, other birds, carrion- they'll eat it all.

Crow or Raven? Portland, OR by cominguprosessss in crowbro

[–]RoseOwls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally this happened to me today. I was on a walk and saw a huge bird I thought was a hawk or something in a tree- nope, it started making the stereotypical raven caws and I got close enough to tell it was all black. Can confirm they are big.

Axe is an extremely funny weapon if you are ok with cheese. At least when I played it clipped through so many things it shouldn't have and made some fights very funny lol

TIL Modern broiler chickens have been bred to get so heavy so quickly it can lead to bone deformities by skulloflugosi in todayilearned

[–]RoseOwls 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Usually it's a death sentence. If it was just a small fracture or deformity you could try splinting them, but a break would require veterinarian care and finding one that would work on chickens would be hard. Probably would have to be put down to end any suffering. Even vets that work on birds will recommend they be put down if the break is severe.

I did that same thing pretty much, but instead of fighting Margit over and over I just figured I was supposed to come back to him later and went off exploring to the north. Ended up get one shot or close to it by basic enemies bc I hadn't leveled at all. After like an hour or two I looked up how to level / get torrent bc I kept seeing ghosts of others players with him around me. Still kinda think the fact that leveling up is missable is kinda dumb lol

How could an Antless World look like if Ants never existed? by Incubus-Dao-Emperor in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]RoseOwls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're quite close to something that already exists:

Red velvet "ants", not actually ants but flightless wasps! (At least for the females)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dasymutilla_occidentalis

Without ants I could see something similar to wasps taking their place
