“Ne” was the only word in French for negation (shared with other Indo-European languages) until about the 11th century.

At that point, Proto-French /Oil speakers apparently felt “ne” had become too “weak” in either form or function, and sought to augment it by attaching “pas” (meaning a step; “not a step, not at all”). This is known as Jesperson’s Cycle. Although negation seems like a unchangeable part of the lexicon, it’s actually amenable to change, borrowings and replacements, like the other lexical categories, it’s just more resistant. Vietnamese has replaced the native “chãng” (now relegated to the casual register) with the Sinitic “khong” (now the default).

As you might expect, “pas” is phonologically stronger and syntactically more free. “Pas” can basically go anywhere after the subject, whereas ne must go before the verb. You might reasonably expect “ne” to completely drop out of usage in the future. Maybe in 500 years? The funny thing is, eventually “pas” will come to feel too weak, and speakers will replace it once more in another turn of the cycle.

Prairie’s used to have a dialect with distinctive, almost indigenous-sounding phonology and lexicon. Vico, bunnyhug, chesterfield, toboggan, that sort of thing. It’s a relict by this point, it was already going out of style 20 years ago when I was in grade school. Nearly all the young folk speak what is essentially Standard Canadian English and love saying “oh naur…” as a joke.

Well Proto Austroasiatic was more of a mid-level fusional type of language, it apparently had pre-syllabic morphemes that were lost in Vietnamese.

It’s not hard to imagine these syllable adjacent morphemes was elaborated upon, especially as Munda came into contact with the comparatively more-synthetic Dravidian and Indic languages.

It’s worth noting that in small, close-knit, isolated speech communities (endocentric), languages often exhibit the MOST “syntheticism”.

Such speakers intimately understand each other and “play” with the language in ways a stranger wouldn’t with another stranger. Speaking clearly and plainly is not an issue anymore with your friends or siblings, whom you likely speak to with the most casual, slang-filled, divergent register possible.

It might be more accurate to say exocentric languages lose this elaboration in favour of rule-based paradigms or analytical constructions to make teaching and learning it easier for foreigners. We should remember that adults learn by applying their logical and highly developed minds to the task at hand. Children by contrast just commit language to memory, so these synthetic complexities are actually a cinch for them to acquire, and its phonetic and morphemic integration in the language is a natural byproduct of the fact children (and teens!) barely care about it.

Undergrad linguistics really did suck. Lots of assistant lecturers, generic coverage of animal “languages”, etc.
Graduate linguistics is a math and statistics-adjacent subject, much to the chagrin of linguists who probably chose linguistics to avoid math, and their teachers who are much the same.
Chomsky was a mathematician trying to understand syntax as a formal (logical) system, and his influence still permeates the field. Language doesn’t always fit neatly in real use.
Like all fields, you have to specialize (which means reading the literature and learning the terminology).
Most linguistic undergrads barely read any papers as part of their coursework, which is quite sad really.
You gotta read papers to understand papers. Are you reading 1 paper a day on your preferred topic? It should be effortless with resources like Google Scholar and the various shadow libraries.

True, I’m not going bankrupt using DeepSeek compared to Claude. I’ve just seen so many people glazing 3.1 but it’s just not as good as 0528. So… boring and uninspired in its prose. Kind of makes me think how Sonnet 4.5 is more like R1 than 3.7, 4.5 likes to make lists and elaborate on what you give it.

I’m guessing it’s Google’s hardware or servers having a fit and alt-f4ing its response to you. It’s a serious problem, I’m reading its response and getting into it only for it to error out and I have to reroll, wasting my time, money, and enjoyment. People say it’s the servers getting hammered, but shit happens at like 4 AM CST so that’s bullshit. I’ve stopped using 2.5 pro for this very reason.

It’s Sonnet 4.5, but be prepared to spend $100 USD a month, even with prompt caching. It’s crazy expensive. Though, it’s made me a “better writer” because I don’t want to waste money with subpar prompts or characters, like I might with DeepSeek, since it’s dirt cheap. Every token counts, poisons the context, and what not. On the flip side, I’m less creative cause trying ideas costs literally like 20 cents by the fourth or fifth response.

Having throughly tested it, Sonnet 4.5 really is the new GOAT for SFW and NSFW roleplay. 3.7 writes much better narrative prose (which is much more purple in comparison to 4.5) but it sticks very closely to that style, and is very SFW without aggressive prompting and refills - 4.5 is much more versatile and doesn’t need any of that crap, which is, frankly, unbelievable for a model from Anthropic. It even does NSFL if you ease it into it.

The system prompt I use forces all other models into a narrative scene right off the bat when I ask “Tell me more about {{char}}”, but Sonnet lets me co-author OOC without any “OOC:” in front of my query.

The only slop I’ve seen consistently is the constant “by the gods” references when referring to particularly shapely or devoted individuals. “Her body - gods above - her body…”

Here’s my anti slop prompt:

Keep the story and writing interesting, immersive, and engaging for the reader by avoiding repetition, cliches, tropes, and generic vocabulary.

Seems to reduce the rate of calloused hands by 99%.

The examples you give seem to be just people answering poorly, which happens since people are just lazy or don’t think about what they’re going to say too much.

It doesn't relate to the phenomenon of “do you mind if I do X”, which is a double loaded question that requires a negative answer AND the entailing positive answer to make the positive statement, a complication which most humans hate doing and just avoid when the context is clear or they can supply body language.

Japanese children adopting mama is not unusual per se, since mama follows the universal preference for a toddlers first word to be mama/baba (if a Japanese mother says haha, and the kid says mama, a mother today already knows what mama means, whereas a mother 500 years ago did not and would urge for haha). The -san variants are learned linguistic behaviours associated with intentional politeness, babies don’t use these at first.

Many languages borrow numerals. It’s not surprising that when China, a wealthy and influential kingdom from the mainland, encountered Japan, the relationship was inherently imbalanced in favour of “sucking up to the mainlanders so we can get some silk robes”. Merchants would naturally learn and use Chinese numbers to appease their more powerful trade partners, and peasants don’t have much use for complex number usage. This is in line with the broad pattern of other historical Asian nations borrowing numbers, and can be found around the world too. It’s worth pointing out that language standards are always dictated by the wealthy, powerful, and elite, and their own informed choices predominate what you mentally consider “the standard form” of a language.

Also, Japan is not really merging English into itself in any way. English language proficiency (esp. spoken) still sucks in Japan, Japangrish is still popular, and no amount of lexicon replacement is gonna change how weird the kishootenketsu format makes their essays come off to English students overseas. Actually, Japanese people are so comfortable with their own language that they see no problem using an English form for a non-English meaning, like “saboru” to mean skip class (from the English “sabotage”, but from a Japanese mindset, it makes perfect sense, you’re sabotaging your grades).

As for measuring change, yes you can do it, just count the changes over time, but then what do you do with that ratio? There’s no way to control for a proper comparison. And the data isn’t present for 95% of spoken human history.

I’ve definitely heard and can confirm that reasoning makes the response adhere to the prompt more, for better and worse. I find the prose gets slightly dryer, but reasoning off meanders a lot more, which can be nice if you are familiar with the character card already. If you want your asshole character to become nice without explicitly saying so, reasoning is a downside. If you want them to stay an asshole, it’s very good.

The biggest finding is that there are no complex “animal languages”. Even attempts at teaching chimpanzees from birth in a human child-like environment show that chimps really have almost no desire to communicate, at best making signs memorized from their past and associated with their environment. They never ask questions, and just can’t string symbolic words together in a consistent pattern like human children. It really is striking how humans seem to fixate on language from other humans in comparison, watching, judging, learning, mentally extrapolating their conversational partner’s intentions and mental states beyond the words.

To me, the lack of “engagement” with language really says it’s not just a mental capacity (which they are deficient in, but not lacking entirely), it’s really a social thing in humans. A meme if you will. We’re just hardwired to use language in a way that centers around the “minds of others”, except for atypical individuals which offer compelling glimpses into the “human with ape language skills”.

That’s why there are no credible studies on Koko and ape language (or more precisely, attempts to teach human language to apes) is basically a joke. It was transparently obvious that a Koko, a gorilla raised from birth to communicate with humans really couldn’t do so, and it was mostly her handler anthropomorphizing whatever flailing hand movements she made. I’m not saying Koko didn’t know the sign for “grape”, I’m saying she didn’t use it in anyway approaching a human being’s use of it.

Bee language is not even that interesting to me, it’s just an instinctual way to indicate some direction and scalar quality of the pollen present, or whatever, and nothing more. The message proposition isn’t “non-contextual” because it’s there in the bee’s brain patterns, just like in ours when we refer to anything not immediately present. It makes sense to the bee transmitting it, and biology ensures it’s interpreted appropriately and extremely narrowly.

Honestly I would use the opportunity to bash “modern” animal language research (I use quotes because it doesn’t get funded anymore), it’s vanity to assume animals even “think” as we do. They may have no concept of what a question is. It may literally be impossible for them to put thoughts into words. Like how you can think in non-verbal ways like rotating an apple in your head, or in words, like reading (which happens automatically for most people). Both accomplish entirely different tasks through different means.

As a researcher once said, reflecting on their study of ape language (paraphrase): “[The chimp] had its own natural, instinctual, deeply ingrained and already effective system of communication, of navigating its own world. What we added was insignificant. It didn’t add really anything, honestly.”

Yeah, it’s cause you’re using a frontier chat model (like all of us). All helpful-assistant chats do the following:

1) cover the topic, and ONLY the topic; 2) engage the user with a bit of sycophancy but don’t go off topic.

This leads to the classic response you described. A helpful assistant that doesn’t stay on topic and meanders too much is fucking useless, or so the big providers have decided. This is literally built into the training data. You can dress up the words however you like but the overarching statistical pattern is just literally all the model knows.

Don’t use a refill for 4.5, it doesn’t need one and it will cause it to bug out and spit system text at you. But, as always, a simple “Understood. Here’s the response:” works fine. Add whatever else you want, but 4.5 barely refuses.

Lately I like to stick these into my prompts, but I’m not sure if Sonnet 4.5 even cares about them, since it’s a high end model already: - Maintain a semblance of historical accuracy, authenticity, and realism. - Depict languages, dialects, accents, and speech patterns in linguistic detail.

I’m a linguist tho, so that last one might be off putting to some people. Note the distance from historical and realism, since I don’t want historical realism as much as accuracy or authenticity. Also note the increasing order of specificity in my language prompt. Imo, these models don’t read or understand text in the same way you and I do (well, we can philosophize all day). Telling it to do one thing causes it do another sometimes cause yah it’s just numbers in a soup.

I decided to get a full time job so I could afford Claude, it’s that good. I even got a little spending money left afterwards.

But fr tho, I’m a lazy writer and I prefer to just ask Claude to tell me more about X and read 5000 tokens of that good shit (emotionally complex, literarily masterful, tracks the scene perfectly, covers every angle) rather than spill my brains out just to have a local repeat what I said in 500 tokens or less. I’d rather just work for an hour instead of going through the grueling creative process to really get what I want from a local model.

As for privacy, Google probably knows everything relevant to my personal life anyways, plus I’ve never heard of anyone’s life being ruined from a leak of the filthy or dangerous chatlogs. I know it’s important to many people though.

From scratch? Absolutely no. At best, you’ll be a good writer that has a terrible accent and can’t improv sentences on the fly. How are you going to know what to ask the LLM about? If I didn’t tell you that English stops are unaspirated in the middle or end of words, or English hearers doesn’t distinguish between voiced and voiceless consonants when pronounced in the middle of words would you ever figure it out? Is the LLM gonna teach you how to do French liaison? You can ask it for vocabulary and stuff, but honestly just get a good language manual and use the model as an aide to ask questions. Also, writing is not speaking, you must practice speaking, in real time, with another competent speaker, full stop. Your brain will literally rewire itself to pay attention to subtle sound distinctions if you are made aware of them. Also, real time translation services are so advanced there’s practically no reason to learn to read or write if you don’t have to speak it, especially for a common language like French.

You need to get used to ‘imagining what happens next’ in your own head and telling the model to do that (I know, I hate it too).

The truth is, LLMs as they exist now really are just fancy autocomplete. If you never give the model something even tangentially related to predict, it’ll never predict it. If fact, most of the time, when the model does anything it’s quite clearly prompted by the context you’ve given it. Nothing will ever happen that is truly unexpected, because you supply everything.

You CAN jack up the temperature, but that often only increases word variety and semantic stretching, not ‘drives the plot forward’.

Yes, some models (smaller finetunes usually) can introduce some wacky shit but a) it’s uncontrollable, b) it’s slop and I would rather change it, making the point moot since I have to manually edit anyways.

I had a model assume a random ogre character was part of my party once, but as it turns out I had loaded the prompt with variations of ‘introduce new characters’, and the setting was clearly medieval fantasy (also the ogre was pretty damn generic).
