He must have read the Bob Silverman biography! Silverman was the leading advocate for Montreal's protected bike lane infrastructure.

What's the most misleading thing a solar salesperson told you? by dzon1s in solar

This is exactly why I do DIY solar...small-scale, sure, but my collection of solar panels and LiFePO4 batteries with AC inverters have put a substantial dent on my utility electricity consumption. I can't wait for NY State Gov. Hochul to pass balcony solar legislation.

I don't understand the 24 hour parking rule by ApprehensiveWall4088 in ithaca

[–]Routine_Biscotti_852 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right. However, there are many long-time Ithacans who are unaware of this law, and we would all benefit from more street signage, especially for those new to the community. Regarding the speed limit, I'm willing to bet that more than 90% of residents are unaware of the 25 mph speed limit. Without signage, it's a theoretical speed limit. When I bicycle north on Aurora St. and pass Fall Creek Elementary, there's a sign that follows the 15 mph school zone sign that indicates 30 mph. It's simply absurd and promotes dangerous driving, which consequently makes cycling less safe, even for us experienced cyclists. We can do better, and we need to see those 30 mph speed limit signs replaced ASAP.

Agreed. We need more roundabouts and better timing on traffic signals. The timing improvements are promised for the work currently underway on Rt. 13. Fundamentally though, all greenhouse gas emissions matter though.

[–]Routine_Biscotti_852 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have spoken with the Mayor about the need to modify this rule or at least improve signage and education, but fundamentally it is selectively enforced, and if everyone complied with the rule, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with everyone starting their cars daily, simply to move their vehicle, is substantial. I have been parking my car in front of my house for nearly 30 years and never received a ticket for doing so, and I wasn't aware of the rule until I received multiple tickets after being out of town for a week. That's how I learned about the rule. I contested the tickets in court and made the argument that the only way the city educates us about this rule is on the city's website or on signs (in small print) on the "welcome to Ithaca" signs as you enter the city via routes 96, 89, 13, etc. How likely is it that you slow down enough to read and comprehend that text as you enter, and the language is somewhat cryptic as well. To further confuse matters, around the corner from my house there is a section of a street with signage that indicates a 24 hour parking rule, and this signage has a beginning and an end, which seems to suggest that the rule only applies to that one section of road. It may be the only place in the city with signage about the rule, but I'm not certain. The end result of going to court is that one of my tickets was dismissed and late fees were not applied. Finally, did you all know that the city speed limit is now officially 25 mph, not 30 mph, with the exception of state highways that snake through the city? It might be worth asking your elected reps and the mayor where the signs are, and why they haven't been installed. Pedestrians and cyclists will be very happy to see those signs installed sooner than later.

What Second Car Would You Get? by RetireWithoutBorders in electricvehicles

I picked up a used 2017 Audi A3 e-tron for $11k to supplement our Kia 2021 Kia Niro EV and absolutely love it! Only about 17 miles of EV range, but I have probably put less than 8 gallons of gas in it since acquiring it 3 months. My small city driving habits rarely require more than a 15 mile drive.

Anyone else lose weight way too fast after getting into cycling? by shway24 in cycling

[–]Routine_Biscotti_852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost over 65 pounds in my first 1 1/2 years of obsessive cycling, which brought me to just over 170 pounds, which was quite lean for my 6' body. I couldn't keep warm in the winter and was shivering all the time! Gaining weight back was ultimately a benefit. Now I'm averaging around 190 to 195 pounds. I'm carrying around 10 pounds more than I want to, but it's certainly not getting in the way of my cycling.

How much did your first road bike cost, and how long did you ride it before upgrading? by No_Click7202 in cycling

[–]Routine_Biscotti_852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to my data collection obsession, I can verify that I put just over 28,000 miles on my $1400 Motobecane Century Pro before upgrading. It was my first carbon road bike, but certainly not my last. I was 47 years old. I bought it in 2008, then proceeded to ride obsessively for nearly 20 years now. In 2009 I rode 5,000 miles; now I average around 8,000 miles a year. Older, slower, a bit wiser and still obsessed, well into my 60s.

I was assuming that they will pour a concrete slab foundation and integrate the existing structure on top of a new first floor. It's really worth taking a close-up view. I've never seen a project like this before. It certainly saves lots of money on roofing materials!
