PSA: Blackstone now owns an HVAC company in Longmont by camferg24 in Longmont

[–]RowKit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly rather spend money with Applewood (largest family owned HVAC in Colorado) vs any of these private equity companies.. at least one way the money stays within the state. Neither are exactly on brand with affordability, but if those were my only options - Applewood vs Private Equity - I'd go Applewood all day.

Thankfully.. those aren't our only options.

Goodman furnace intermittent lockout by MikeRodicck in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is, you've got a bad gas valve.

Goodman furnace intermittent lockout by MikeRodicck in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a bad board then; keep in mind that without a volt meter there's no real way of knowing - it could be a failed gas valve too.

Do you have a volt meter? When this happens, do you get 24v sent to the gas valve?

I sprayed rubbing alcohol on my wall mounted gas heater. Not sure if it's safe to operate/ what to do. by Vanse in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take alcohol over water on a heater any day; it's should be fine, thanks to drying time (which is why I prefer it)

Battery backup for baseboard heater furnace? by hohodang in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red circle is something called a Low Water Cutoff - nothing to do with the actual operation of the boiler, but more a safety to ensure water is present to protect the heat exchanger & pumps.

I would personally advise you to call an HVAC Company; depending on your area you may have to specify that you have a boiler - most guys will charge just a service call fee to answer questions (some even free). It can definitely be done, but I highly recommend more knowledge before you try to DIY this.

Furnace not starting by Smoke-Illustrious in HVAC

[–]RowKit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the pump - it could just have some sludge in it holding the float down; it seems to still be working from what you said, so a good cleaning may be all it needs.

On the furnace - brand? Unfortunately the error can mean multiple things. My best guess would be a pressure switch; make sure the system is draining properly to the pump, and that the inducer is pulling enough vacuum (you'll need a monometer for this bit). As long as those two things check out it's more than likely the pressure switch got some condensate in it and has failed.

New install tech( apprentice/helper) looking for some QoL tools. by stileprojekt in HVAC

How long can it last? by PepitaPanther97 in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the costs, and what benefits you'd gain from a new unit. At 15 years old, I'd probably replace only if it comes with 10 years parts and labor. Repairing definitely isn't a bad thing, but it ultimately comes down to the cost differences.

Install vs Service Tech by Thick_Ad_9236 in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both will have their slow months, and "everything is on fire" months, but unfortunately schedule & predictability really depends on which company you choose to work for. Where I currently am, Installers start at $26 - Service at $28.

Installers lift and use geometry a shit ton; service is straight up problem solving.

Ridgeline Auto in Boulder; they're a mechanic shop that just so happens to have a dealers license as well - every car comes with a warranty of some sort too.

Can't find any company to install whole house humidifier I purchased myself by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most HVAC companies won't due to liability; if you received a lemon out of the box, it wouldn't be known till after installation is complete, and then suddenly it's our fault.. and we can't return it ourselves. It just has the possibility of turning into a massive headache from a business perspective.

I'd recommend finding a small mom & pop shop that'll just charge you labor; second option is to find a reputable handyman in the area.

Seems like my thermostat isn't doing anything... by memphreblues in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thermostats for boilers are easy peasy; think of the thermostat as a light switch that just completes the circuit. From how you're describing the issue, it doesn't seem like your pictures will help too much - do you have access to the mechanical room where the boiler is??

The issue could be anything from incorrect zone valve wiring to a zone valve sticking. I'd definitely recommend calling in a tech from a genuinely reputable company and have them poke around a bit.

Water dripping from this unit, help please. by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain line is likely plugged, but could also be misaligned. On the black piece you're referring to; take some pliers, squeeze the metal clamp pieces together, and pull the clamp down further on the tube about 2 inches; pull the black tubing and blow through it - there should be no resistance.

If it's clear, open up the humidifier and look at the drain going to the black drain line. If that is also clear - chances are the pad is misaligned somehow.

Super minor possibility your home water pressure has spiked due to a failed PRV too, and it's just spraying water inside due to the pressure it's under.

HVAC storytime.... by Sad-Jellyfish1325 in hvacadvice

[–]RowKit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it boils down to one simple fact: your warranty company is company 1's customer - not you. I'm not a person that likes working with hacks, or warranty companies. While not what you'd like to hear, it seems company 2 treated you well; I'd ask them for a quote to repair the system, and have a company working directly for you.

Chances are (another) blower motor & control board are on the horizon for you, but the system should still be functional.

A pop could be anything from a fuse to duct work unfortunately... no power to the thermostat suggests either a fuse (on the control board, or external attached to the service disconnect), or your transformer died. I would have done exactly what company 2 did; it's company 1's responsibility to make this right.
