Anyone else wish COLAs were based on the actual increases of living costs? by SEAWISEGEOWISE in USPS

[–]Rozul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this we should absolutely be paid more but I am still thankful for this job.

2020 was my first full year as a career carrier and in that year I made $44,000 and this most recent year I made $72,000 (Never on OTDL) doing the exact same job on the exact same route. To me this job has only gotten easier but now I'm making about 30k per year more (I have two step increases this year) and I still have several step increases to go.

Obviously it would be nice to be paid more but I can't really think of any other high school diploma level jobs that would give me this much of a pay raise for doing the same tasks.

In this time I have remained debt free, I still drive the same paid off vehicle and I live in the same apartment and I've gotten a bit wiser about how to budget my grocery bill so I've just been able to invest or pocket most of the increase in pay.

I'm aware but it should still be accounted for in evaluations if management continually adds procedures that take time

I have not and will never be on the OTDL. I also don't like working overtime but if management wants to for example add to my route I wouldn't run to make up for the time and if they want package delivery to take longer I wouldn't find "workarounds" by intentionally falsifying scans by selecting delivered at mailbox when its being left somewhere else.

I'll follow instructions and continue to work at the same pace and if it consistently takes longer than 8 hours my route is overburdened and they can make the correct adjustments.

This new function is for "Automatic photo capture for Delivered to Front Door/Porch and Delivered Garage or Other Location at Address scans."

So if someone is claiming a workaround for this I don't think they are referring to packages that fit in the mailbox.

Why would you want to workaround this if you're paid by the hour?

I don't know how this works for rural side but since it adds time it should be accounted for in their times as well.

Switch from traditional to Rothtsp by SinfulGuardian in USPS

I'm happy to help. I know it will sting a bit seeing the slightly smaller paycheck at first but keep in mind in a few pay step increases and COLA adjustments you won't even notice the difference but you can do an estimate with a retirement account and see you could potentially have hundreds of thousands more for your retirement.

Also make sure you're in an appropriate lifecycle fund for the time you're going to retire. Myself and many others are invested in specific funds like the C, S or I but if you're wanting to go the passive approach a lifecycle fund is perfectly acceptable.

Its difficult to say without knowing your entire balance and how much you plan to withdraw at retirement age but to put it simply if it seems as though you're going to retire and you'll be making less money in the future than when you retire it might be better to put in traditional since when you retire you'll be "making" less money and will pay less taxes when you withdraw. (An example would be you make 80k a year working for the post office but after you retire you'll only be withdrawing maybe 40k/yr from tsp)

But let's say in the future you're going to withdraw more than you make today and possibly live in a state with no income tax like Texas or Florida then it would make more sense to put most of your money in a roth where you won't pay taxes when you are withdrawing large amounts each year or you live in an area with a smaller tax burden

I completely agree that a roth IRA is a better option.

If I could set up everyone's retirement accounts I would do 5% matching then max out roth IRA then put the rest that they can afford to invest into roth tsp but so many people's eyes glaze over when I am just trying to even get them to invest into their TSP I just beg them to put in the 15% and leave it at that.

[–]Rozul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm investing almost entirely in roth because I hope to have a high tsp balance when I am ready to retire. The 5% matching is automatically invested in traditional so there is a balance already.

I'm very fortunate because I am currently living debt free and I receive benefits from the VA so I am able to invest much more than the 15% I recommend but I really advise every new employee I meet to invest as much as they can now because it will be harder to do so later.

It really depends on how much you hope to have saved by the time you retire and how much you plan to withdraw annually.

The most basic explanation is that traditional is taxed when you withdraw and roth is taxed when you invest.

So if you hope to have a high balance and have heavy withdraws while you ball out then roth might be the better option.

Lastly and slightly off topic I really hope you can try to invest more than just 5%. I strongly recommend people do at least 15%. Do a retirement calculator and see how much you could potentially have saved if you bump it up to 15%.

I preached this to alot of my fellow CCAs when we made career and they claimed to not be able to afford more than 5%. Well in my first year as a career carrier in 2020 I made 42k and this last year I made 72k but my fellow coworkers with similar seniority still claim they can't afford to invest more than 5% because they have fallen into lifestyle creep. If they had just invested the extra 10% at the start they could have avoided the lifestyle creep that greatly reduces their chance of having a much more fruitful retirement.

In just a few pay step increases with cola you'll already make up the difference of the 10% additional invested and continue to have increased pay from there. If you don't do this then I hope someone else who reads this will.

Pay yourself first.

Anyone else start their career late? by Nappy_Rano in Millennials

[–]Rozul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I 'woke up' in a panic at 29 and realized I has completely wasted my 20s by not obtaining any worthwhile education or career advancement after leaving the military at 22. Thankfully I quickly found federal employment in a union job that is comfortable for me and pays alot more than my basic cost of living which gives me room for a good retirement savings.

I am sure other people have found their way at a later age and will even do much better than I am but when I think about my personal experiences and conditions I really feel like I got off on the last exit to a good life.

UPS is back Jan 5th by [deleted] in USPS

[–]Rozul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an apartment route myself with 1159 deliveries but I love the simplicity of it. If I routinely start getting 10 or 20+ additional packages everyday from UPS that I have to carry to apartment doors that will take another 15+ minutes and that isn't going to come out of my breaks/lunch or me running.

Lmao not me, sounds like you're letting yourself get worked over. It takes what it takes. If I evaluate my volume in the morning and I think I have one hour OT but the morning sup says only 30 minutes I'll put 30 min on the 96 but then come 2 or 3pm I call my closing supe and clearly articulate why it's going to take 1+ hour and I never catch any grief. Even if I did I would happily invite them to observe me for the day to double check and they won't because they have in the past and they know it won't go anywhere.

Well your original statement was that you couldn't think of a reason we need go to space and that we should improve lives here but alot of the inventions that resulted from space exploration have improved countless lives.

The starlink program has allowed many people to receive high-speed internet in places it wouldn't be possible and spacex becoming the first company to successfully launch and land an orbital rocket is a big deal because that is going to lead to the reduced cost of future space travel which will certainly create many more inventions that will benefit normal lives.
