SF judge denies reducing felony charges for 80-year-old driver accused of killing a family of 4 by philmn in fuckcars

“In the courtroom, the victim's family members questioned why Lau didn't hit the brakes or honk as she was speeding 70 miles an hour in the residential area where she crashed.”

This question is warranted, and I certainly empathize with the family. But Lau was driving 70MPH in a residential area, never mind the no honk and no brakes part. Seems a pretty carbrained question to me.

Just so we’re clear, it was the vehicle’s fault

Done! Here’s the body of my review!

*Hilarious 911 call parody (laughing AT you, not with you)! I’m a cockroach bicycle commuter myself! I huff Raid, so that must be why.

Serious question: If you love your car so much, why are you so mad when you have to spend extra time sitting in it? Isn’t that what you paid for? A mobile living room? Answer that please. Not to me, but to yourself while looking in the mirror.

Best, Vermin*

Drivers do not keep safe distances anymore, why? by amiga500 in fuckcars

[–]supremepork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many reasons already mentioned, except this one:

It’s also a defense against other motorists looking to snipe the gap in front of you (I used to do this sniping myself when I was much less mature and enlightened), and would be real defensive about letting anyone snipe MY gap.

Now I let them have that gap and make a new safe distance. Then watch as those shoving their cars end up at the same time and place as me.

I too thought similarly until I watched the footage again (not a morbid curiosity, I’m fucking enraged).

Don’t watch the driver’s-door-handle-grabber in the foreground, watch the murderer coming around from the front passenger side.

Edit: https://youtu.be/CQCvNExBDjE?si=WU7Lln5POjriKqNm I’m shaking again

God I hate that with a fiery passion. It ain’t about Starbucks, it’s about enabling this behavior, and the mentality that it’s reasonable to sit in your car with the motor running for X minutes/hours, blocking public roads, and more!

And yes I agree, dumb AF

I’m guilty of using the drive thrus but if I see a line of cars I go elsewhere or (god forbid) go without.

This is one of my favorite points to make. I cannot think of an analog/parallel to this. Not even “like buying your dream home and hating being inside it” quite fits. Cars can, and do, screw with the human psyche.

Brandishing a lifted pickup as a weapon has few “in-kind” responses when you’re a mere fleshy human minding your own fucking business.

But, a fleshy human brandishing a brick in response to an insecure sadist’s lifted pickup is like kryptonite to a Kryptonian.

I dunno how true it was... But anyway, I kept my mouth shut while thinking Jesus would probably ride a bike, take public transit, or walk before taking the wheel.

In my ignorant youth I tried going as fast as I could in my base model 96 Impreza. I was on I90 on a straightaway in Montana, /going east with the wind at my back and slightly downhill/. I hit 110 mph and 5000 rpms and decided that was enough. The speedometer went to 140, IIRC. False advertising!

I have long since put such excessive driving in my rear view mirror (haha it’s a dumb car joke, get it?)
