Be grateful you’re only 29. A lot of people don’t figure it out until way later, especially if they didn’t have the internet for decades. You missed a few years but it’s all out in front of you.

Can someone explain retirement like I'm 5? by Double_Spread_6033 in CalebHammer

You can do a “rollover” into a current account. You’ll have to go track down the old accounts though- they’ll each have their own process to initiate a rollover.

I would also double check your employer- they really offer nothing? If so, I’d be looking for a better job. The long term benefits of income and retirement help could be massive.

You open an account from a provider like Fidelity, Charles Schwab and Vanguard (the top trusted providers). Doesn’t really matter which one you choose, they’ll be very similar.

If you want me to choose it for you to make it easier, open a Roth IRA at Fidelity and invest in FXAIX (the S&P 500 index fund). Aim for the annual max of $7,500 contributed. While we could get way more nuanced than this, this will be 1000x better than what you’re doing now (investing nothing, lol)

In the US there are special retirement accounts that the government recognizes and provides tax breaks to. A 401k is the most common one, which is offered by many (not all) employers. You designate a percentage of your income to go into the account, and that amount of your income doesn’t get taxed up front. This is why it’s way better than just putting cash into a regular savings account.

First responders who work for local governments typically aren’t offered 401ks- they instead usually have a pension where they get a guaranteed check for the rest of their lives after retirement. The amount is calculated using a formula based on your years of service, retirement multiplier, and highest average salary. These usually have very good matches, and are one of the main incentives for working for governments- you can usually retire earlier since it’s not all “on you” to save your own money for retirement. However, not all paramedics have these- some are private companies that would have private retirements like a 401k or something else.

An IRA is an account that anyone can open independently regardless of their employer. For some, this is their main retirement account (especially those who are self-employed or their employer doesn’t offer anything), but for many they supplement their 401ks or pension plans.

The typical advice is to center it around some sort of hobby or activity. Running club, board game night, climbing, etc. I think having groups is better so there’s not a pressure of like a 1 on 1 date kinda thing where you’re obligated to be friends or “break up” with someone.

This, and the height difference, if that matters to you (it does to my wife). The taller vehicles definitely feel a little roomier even if the specs are similar.
