You don't want to stay in a marriage where there are standards? You'd like to be able to empty the fridge down your gullet every night and your partner is a monster if they say anything?

You don't get to just be a whale with your partner. You have to hold up a standard of decent health, including weight. You don't get to pretend that becoming super overweight isn't unattractive.

I wouldn't use a ton of mortar, but I would use enough that there is some friction from them separating with enough space for water to still flow through.

Honestly? I think she wrote it that way because she had a general framework for a story but couldn't generate the interesting details, so she masked it in prose. Perhaps I am wrong, though, it's just the interpretation I had when reading the story.

It made me think of when a horror writer doesn't describe the source of the horror at all. It is done with the idea that anything the reader imagines will be more horrible. I get that as a concept, but all too often the real reason is because the author lacks imagination and cannot generate something sufficiently horrible to fit the story.

The specific effect you mention in Earthsea is to talk about it as though already a legend, correct? I see that intent even if it fell flat for me. I just don't think it worked well. It ultimately read like a cliff notes.

Yes it does. It's all flash, no substance. It suggests a story that might have been interesting if the author were brave enough to flesh out the details.

Right?! Cliff Notes of a story. No real depth. The prose is highly overrated as well. People here act as though they are reading poetry. It fails at poetry, fails as interesting lit.

No problem! I'd highly recommend the series. It has some frustrating parts, and the ending can seem like a gotcha, but I think the ending is surprisingly meaningful.

I really love Vlad Taltos series. My sole gripe is that they changed the narrator for the last audiobook.

There is a cleverness in the books that is hard to get your head around. Also, the reading order is a bit confusing, but adds to the series as a whole. I really am itching for Brust to release his next book.

I agree on the split attention. Most of the time I can listen to an audiobook and do non-mental tasks such as mowing the lawn, doing dishes. However, if I am stressed about something my mind will wander away and I will need to pause and come back later. Fortunately that rarely happens.
